What's the best way to find a great local restaurant while on vacation? Ask a shopkeeper! That's how I found the Homestead Kitchen in Talkeetna, and I'm so glad I did. The whole experience was unforgettable. My waitress, Holly, was incredibly warm and friendly. She recommended two things I absolutely had to try: the fried pickles and the halibut sandwich. The pickles were a revelation—homemade and sliced like fries, with a perfect batter that made them dangerously delicious. I also ordered the halibut sandwich without a bun, and Holly thoughtfully served it with a side salad and potato chips. The halibut was clearly fresh, which she confirmed, and it was outstanding. It's blueberry season in Alaska, and Holly recommended the cobbler made with fresh blueberries from Hatcher Pass. Wow! It was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. Holly also shared a bit of her story with me—it's no surprise she used to be a flight attendant, because you can tell how much she genuinely loves people. Great food and terrific service make this a must-visit spot.

wonderful place on Main Street. If you’re looking for standard pub grub there are plenty of options in this cute little town. However, if you’re looking for a unique dining experience with very good food this is the place. They have a number of really unique apps to choose from.. The Swedish meatballs were something special because they used a raspberry rhubarb glaze. I heard the chowder was amazing by some guests next to us. The Elk sloppy Joe was very unique and delicious. The seafood gumbo was outstanding. Do yourself a favor and add the cheese dip as a side if you get a sandwich that comes with homemade chips. It’s perfect for dipping. Don’t forget to order the rhubarb skillet with a scoop of vanilla custard on top to finish off the meal.

This is just a real nice casual restaurant in town here. I think our server was Helen. She’s the one that makes the homemade sangria. She was really friendly and just nice as could be. The other server was really interesting, kind of loud but in an entertaining way. The food was well prepared and very fresh. Just a solid meal out in the middle of nowhere. If the prices seem a little high, remember, they are literally hours from civilization. I imagine just about everything needs to be trucked or by train from Anchorage or trucked down from Fairbanks! The place felt incredibly clean and warm. I’m sure they have rushes but if you get there early for lunch, we were one of the first table seated. It was pretty packed by the time we left.

We came to Homestead Kitchen on a rainy day, and gumbo sounded like the perfect comfort food. Our large non-white group arrived a few minutes before noon, and the servers told us the kitchen was transitioning for lunch until 12. That was fine—we said we would wait and started sitting down. Another server even told us to stay put while he checked when food would be ready.

But then, an older man at the bar suddenly yelled that we couldn’t sit because they “needed to do a turnover,” even though there were already people eating inside. As we were leaving, one of the staff made a comment: “Good, it’s going to be quiet here again.” The way it was said felt extremely unwelcoming and discriminatory.

One of our group simply said “bless you” as we walked out, and we decided to take our business next door to Fairview Deck Restaurant . What a difference—friendly service and the salmon chowder there was absolutely amazing.

Sadly, our experience at Homestead Kitchen felt rude and racist. If you’re looking for good food and good service in Talkeetna, I’d recommend skipping this place and heading to...

My mom & I went for lunch while we were waiting for our train- I got the kid’s cheeseburger & my mom got a salad. Her salad was brought out first & when my food wasn’t brought out at the same time, they said it would be 5-10 minutes. 20+ minutes passed & my mom had already finished her whole salad. Other people’s food had been brought out that ordered several people after us & when my mom complained to the servers & they said they had no manager. When I asked to just get a refund, they said my food just came out & packaged my food up for me to go without the refund. Another couple waiting to speak to them had the same issue. The wait isn’t the biggest issue, it was the food coming out at differing times with other people receiving their food before mine when they had ordered much later. The food was good however which is why I didn’t leave it...
