Overview:Â Chinese/Japanese food in Alaska
Meal/Time: Early Dinner/430PM, Tuesday night
Decor/Atmosphere:2/5 The outside of the building is a bit off putting for me. Facade is that of Chinese Palace. Thank goodness the inside is not as cheesy. The interior is of dark wood and looks a lot more appealing.
Service/ Front of the House: 5/5 greeted and seated quickly. Good interaction
Service/Serving Staff: 5/5 everyone I encountered during my dining were friendly and helpful. Really friendly.
Food: 3/5
Thai Iced Tea $6. Sweet and it tastes like the way it is supposed to.
Sesame Chicken Dinner Bento Box $25 - I figure this is the best way to try a number of different things without pigging out too much. The Bento Box comes with 3 pieces of shrimp tempura and 3 veggie tempura (2 pieces of sweet potato and 1 of zucchini); 1 egg roll; 4 pieces of California Roll; and steamed rice.
Lets start with what is right: the sesame chicken was breaded and deep fried white meat covered in sweet thick sesame soy sauce. The chicken is tender and I was relatively happy with the flavor. The steamed rice was perfectly cooked.
OK now for the not so good: the tempura batter is not the traditional light tempura batter... its more heavy. Maybe some panko to make it more airy. The tempura sauce is not tempura sauce. The sauce is way too dark and thick... it taste more like Ponzu sauce.
The egg roll wrapper is on the thick side (more like a wonton wrapper) that is deep fried; the veggie stuffing is not bad though... pretty good flavor.
The California Roll is OK, but it was not seasoned sushi rice... more like unflavored long grain rice. No wasabi on the tray.
Value: 4/5 I am taking into consideration that the restaurant is in Alaska.
Restroom: 5/5 Men's Room has 1 sink/1 urinal/ 1 toilet. Really clean and brightly lit. The towel dispense was broken during my visit, but the restaurant had towels stacked and ready to go.
Will I come back? I want to come back with more people so I can try the family...
Read moreMe and my mom went the other day. First and foremost as a former host there has to be a point to where you stop taking tables if your servers/waitresses can't handle them. They pointed at a table which i barely even noticed because she was across the restaurant instead of coming to actually ahow me to the table. Which is just the first time that's ever happened to me. Regardless you go on a wait if its so packed that you can't even greet your guests (it wasn't packed) we basically had to grab someone to even serve us at the table that we were waiting 10 minutes at and we were just wanting something to drink. When we were finally ready to order it took 3 seperate servers before they understood that my mom was requesting soy wrap for her sushi (dietary restriction) i believe the 3rd server was an actual manager because she finally knew what it was. I personally kept trying to give them grace because maybe they were new or something or just busy but honestly it felt like we were serving ourselves. If the 3rd lady had taken us from the jump this probably would have been a way better experience but like i said they refused to go on a wait or anything. If we needed something we basically had to go and get it for ourselves and thats just unacceptable. The food overall was decent the gyoza wasn't very good but not so bad that i couldn't finish it. And the lo mein was actually pretty good. I wanted to see if they had dessert but i didnt want to stay an extra for the service. We also had an emergency with someone in the hospital and had to go so we basically had to grab the lady yet again to take care of us so we could leave. I really wanted to like this place and be patient with the staff however they made it basically...
Read moreWe love this place. It's close, the food is fresh and well prepared and they are open until 10, which is great because we usually work until 9. I particularly love their booths! They're easy to clean and slide in and out of, and they don't collapse from years of abuse when you sit down. The only thing that I don't like is that the salt and pepper shakers do not appear to have EVER been cleaned. I'm a pepper fan. I put a ton of pepper on almost EVERYTHING, but I don't do that here because the receptacles are so disgusting. I also wish that there were vegetables included with entrÊes. I don't eat much fried food so I don't mind too much that my General Tso's chicken is just rice and fried chicken, but it would be nice if they at least offered a side of stir fried veggies to complete a meal. Prices are high, but you do get a pretty high quantity of food, and it is super fresh. But the high prices have kept me from exploring more of the menu. The authentic Chinese cuisine is about $5 more than americanized favorites. I have an interest in trying some of those dishes, but the one time I did, I tried the authentic Kung Pao chicken and received exactly the same as the regular menu Kung Pao, but paid $5 more for the privilege. That pretty much shut down my explorations. So, not the greatest restaurant experience I've ever had, but so far it beats all of the other Chinese restaurants we've tried in Anchorage, and they...
