I'm sorry to rain on the owner's parade here, especially with so many raving reviews. I really wanted to like the place. It was even more disappointing since I brought an out of town friend whom I talked into going for some really great and creative sushi, as they were tagged everywhere. Well, to say it was disappointment is an understatement. Ok, granted that I'm a little biased here given the fact that I've ran quite a few restaurants before and know how the sushi rice ought to be cooked and what fresh salmon looks and feels like. Still, I can say for sure that the night we ordered everything must've gone wrong at Bottle Rocket's kitchen. First of all, the rice was way overcooked, it was all mushy and resembled rice porridge more than anything from Japanese cuisine. Now, one can argue about the creativity and aesthetics, and yes, restaurant food should always look awesome and not just be tasty. But when you have so much sauce, crunches, and batter (OMG there was so much batter in these fried rolls!! It was like eating corn dog)... I mean, it was sweet, tasty, a calorie-bomb, but c'mon, what does it have to do with a sushi roll? You cannot taste seafood inside at all! You we could taste was sweet batter, fried oil, sauce and some crunches. And now for the biggest disappointment. All those "creative" takes on sushi and totally overcooked rice we could overlook, if not for the last roll. So the salmon used in it wasn't fresh for sure. I'm not saying it was spoiled — it must've been refrozen several times because it felt like fish that died several times already.. and had no taste whatsoever. But how surprised we were to find thick pieces of cartilage (yes, bones, some fat, connecting tissue that's impossible to chew) in the first piece... then the second.. then the third!!! Ok, that's when we stopped. The rest went to the trash. I sincerely hope that our order had fulfilled the quota for the night and everyone else got their rolls without complaints, although that's difficult to manage with overcooked rice and that poor salmon that was refrozen and not cleaned correctly. Hopefully, the lady who made our order was a temporary cook, and not doing it nightly. So yes, it was a very very disappointing mean, half of it thrown away. One star for the great atmosphere and vibes. Please check on your cooks, especially on...
Read moreMan I really don't know what happened to this place. We've been a few times but we don't remember it being what we experienced yesterday. We ordered 2 burgers and karaage chicken. Neither of these menu items are as described on the menu and are a straight up false advertisement.
The burger was not cooked to order, nor did I taste any of the Korean bbq sauce it's supposed to be marinated in. Probably the most concerning part is that the menu as well as the websites states that it's served with "battered seasoned fries" but they are frozen crinkle fries with no seasoning. We even asked the server about this and he stated "of course we serve frozen fries, we're a sushi restaurant. and the fries have very little salt." even though the large neon sign in the window says sushi and burgers.
The Karaage chicken is straight up highway robbery. it's a chicken strip at best (and honestly, this is me being generous with my description) served again with the bland crinkle fries.
The server himself seemed very perturbed by our honest review when he asked how we enjoyed the food. We were not rude, nor disrespectful but he began to ignore simple pleasantries after the interaction ("thank you's", appreciate you. etc.).
To be clear we weren't expecting 5 star service - it is a bar, and we get it. But at the very least it's expected to receive the dish you order. I hate writing this because it's one of the only late night, hang out, food places in the area but unfortunately I feel it needs to be said. Hopefully these guys can revamp and make...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I were visiting Atlanta and wanted dinner. On our third day there, we decided to wander away from the downtown area in search of better dining options. It's easy to walk by and miss this place, but a man sitting outside with his dog suggested that we try it. I didn't know what to think about a bar that served sushi and burgers, but the nice man with the beautiful pittie named Blue was right!
A man, who I assumed is the owner, welcomed us once we were inside. He told us that they weren't able to serve any hot food for another 15-20 minutes because the grill was being serviced. Considering that my girlfriend and I were hungry, and wanted to order burgers, this was disappointing news. We decided to order sushi as appetizers and wait for the grill to be ready. As we waited for our food, we saw an eclectic mix of people coming in and out of the bar, and it appeared that many of them knew each other. The atmosphere was very friendly.
The owner chatted with us a bit here and there as he worked, and then brought the sushi rolls to our table. I'm glad that grill was not working when we arrived, because the sushi was fantastic! We debated on ordering more sushi, but instead decided to go with burgers next, and put in our order. I ordered a burger with a side salad, and my girlfriend ordered her burger with fries. Both burgers were outstanding! My side salad was a very nice portion size, and her krinkle👌🏼fries were cooked to perfection!
I'd visit Bottle Rocket again for sure, and recommend that you give it a try as...
