One of the most uncomfortable restaurant experiences of my life. This past Saturday, we visited Recess. When sat down a male server was quick to welcome my wife and I, and get us menus. He returned in few minutes and took our drink orders. So far no problem. When my drink arrived, a female server was confused on what we ordered. She gave us a dirty look as she set down the drink. We then ordered food. It was delivered with another dirty look from a second female server, without so much as a word asking us what we ordered or what was being served. As we were starting to eat the first female server approached us and aggressively said "do you have a problem?" We hadn't said a word, gestured, or even looked at her (at this point there wasn't even a minor problem). My wife said: "No. I'm just waiting for my drink, but I can see he (the male server) is making it." When we were about 1/2 finished the same female server asked us, again with a confrontational tone, "Can I get you a lid so you can take that with you?", pointing at the food we were still eating. Finally, when we were close to finished, but still eating, the second female server came over and started clearing the food away, without asking if we were finished. We politely stopped her. We quickly finished and left. As we were leaving we realized our food was served COLD and in a to-go box, while the customers around us received theirs' hot and in glass/ceramic bowls Needless to say, we will not be returning. Sounds like service is a...

Mediocre at best. From the lack of customer service to the sorry salad bowl.

Recess was the ONLY establishment that wouldn’t even acknowledge a customer. Not even a hello. They opted for completely distanced ordering. THEN after you order online it says you will get updates. I checked the counter multiple times and was COMPLETELY IGNORED. 23 minutes later my bowl was on the window. No text. No message. A girl from the back came up as I was looking to talk to someone and I see the bowl and check the name.. I told her I was disappointed that no one spoke to me or notified me my food was ready. Everyone else in my group ordered from several other establishments placing their orders after mine and they were done eating by the time I got mine.

So the food. The dressing was so disappointing. The collards were obviously room temp and not chilled or warmed. Just kind of sad. The sweet potatoes looked old. The salad bits were wilted. And the rice was almost al dente. It was cold.

I expected a combination of hot and cold ingredients. Then I added shredded chicken that tasted like rubber and was also cold and dry.

I read great reviews and I was interested in the menu but it fell so short of expectations. Skip this place and go get a ramen and a bao bun. They were fast, hot and actually good.

I was really looking forward to this place and wow- management fail. Customer service fail. Freshness...

Edit: I have ordered food from Recess three times since writing my initial review, and taking a break from the food. I can say with full confidence that every problem I had in the past seems to have been addressed. Today I had the Tom Cruz bowl, a riff off the Pancho and Lefty. It’s was fantastic. All of the food in this dish has been improved since the last time I had it. Still a little on the salty side for me, but I can admit I am sensitive to saltiness. Big props to Recess for addressing issues with their food. Putting it back in the rotation for my healthy food days!

Original Review: Ordered the Caesar Salad today, through Uber eats. I’ve had a slew of disappointing experiences from Recess recently, but wanted to give them another shot. When the food is good, it is just so good. So I rolled the dice. And yet again, the food was terrible. The kale was hard and gritty, the artichoke was completely missing, the dressing was overwhelmingly lemony, the croutons were essentially a liquid, and there were a few strange/unidentifiable seeds found in the salad.

Unfortunately, I’ve gotta call this one the last straw. I will not be ordering from Recess again after...

What a great food place! The employees are super nice and the food was excellent. Though I only had the loaded sweet potatoes, the quality of the side item is most likely representative of yummy options on their entire menu. The loaded sweet potatoes fries came with chives, garlic and chipotle aioli, and chili crisps. The aioli was reminiscent of crème fraiche type sauce and tasted delightful with the chives and chili flakes. I wish the sweet potatoes were thicker and had more of a meaty and soft center to counterbalance crispy, dry texture of the other layer. Yes, my many years of watching cooking shows and eating at amazing restaurants has earned me an honorary culinary degree (jokes). I’m excited to return and try the other items on the menu. I definitely recommend this cute vegan spot to other foodies out there looking for healthy, or food tolerant, options.

I’m leaving this review in the spirit of helping other families that make the trip to Krog Street Market for an outing as we often do. We had a disappointing experience at Recess upon ordering two kids meals (an almond butter and jelly sandwich) for my 4 and 6 year old. It was listed as kids meal: a sandwich served with sweet potato fries for $5 each. The meal that was served did not meet our expectation. We were served a half sandwich that wouldn’t feed a small toddler per picture attached. I went back to the counter to inquire. I waited, while the seemingly small issue was escalated to management, only to be told to pay for a new order of two more sandwiches (would have been a total of $20 dollars not including tax and gratuity). In terms of service, guest experience and value for money, Recess did not deliver.
