Sotto Sopra, a boutique restaurant located in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore, is set in a historic building. As I stepped inside, the inviting aromas of fresh ingredients mingled with soft, ambient sounds, creating an atmosphere that felt both vibrant and intimate.
I immediately noticed the happy faces of the patrons, their laughter and camaraderie filling the air. The warmth of the beautifully decorated dining area and bar, along with the dim lights, set the mood for the perfect late dinner. Although the restaurant is family-friendly, I think it’s ideal for a first date or date night. The seating allows enough room for a private conversation without feeling too far apart, offering cozy tables that invite intimacy while still being part of the lively atmosphere.
As we settled into our seats, the server greeted us with a warm smile, making us feel welcome and valued. To start, we ordered appetizers: the calamari and the Sotto Sopra flatbread topped with arugula and prosciutto, accompanied by cocktails; we both opted for the Speziata. When the calamari arrived, it was artfully arranged and included crunchy fried vegetables that were incredibly delicious, alongside the fresh and perfectly prepared calamari. The delightful crunch of both the calamari and vegetables was complemented by rich marinara sauce and a white garlic sauce for dipping—both were tasty and satisfying.
For our entrees, we chose the Creekstone Farms Ribeye and the Branzino Fillet. The ribeye was beautifully plated with tender potatoes cooked to perfection and an incredible red sauce that was out of this world—something I had never tasted before. The Branzino came with tender potatoes and a flavorful tomato and garlic sauce that left a lasting impression.
Our entire meal was absolutely delicious; hands down, some of the best food I’ve tasted in a long time. To conclude, we indulged in dessert: the tiramisu and the vanilla crème brûlée. The tiramisu was light and creamy, while the crème brûlée had a luscious custard base topped with a perfectly caramelized layer that added a delightful crunch.
We will be returning time and time again in the future. Sotto Sopra isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a delightful escape where great food and a lively atmosphere intertwine, making it a perfect choice for...
Read moreI have worked in the restaurant industry for the last 15 years. While planning a special date night me and my gf came upon Sotto Sopra. With an added recommendation from another current industry friend that works in the area we picked this establishment as our choice. I'm not a fancy person by any means so when I arrived at the restaurant I was feeling good about a small awning hanging outside and not much going on besides the valet (we still obviously dressed for the occasion just incase lol) When I walked inside I was amazed at how beautiful the place was. We had a reservation so we didn't have to wait and they even sat us in a booth per request of the lady. They extended restaurant week (thank god because I was sick the Friday before and pretty much ruined me and the lady's plans for that evening) so we were lucky enough to experience what we came for. As an industry person I figured the price would stay high and the portions would be smaller. I was completely wrong. I come from a long line of 100% Sicilian family so nothing compares to a homemade meal no matter how authentic the place, I'm usually left with some kind of "eh it could have been better". This past Friday night was the BEST meal I have ever enjoyed outside of a family members home. I have been recommending this restaurant ever since. I just can't get over how amazing this date night was. The prices were fair regarding beer, wine, and food. If anyone's looking for a special night out whether it be a anniversary, date night, or any other special kind of occasion I would put my highest word on this place. Thank you Sotto Sopra for the amazing experience!!
Sincerely,
A canton...
Read moreWhile visiting Baltimore for a graduation, my wife and I celebrated our anniversary at Sotto Sopra—and what an unforgettable evening it was.
We made a reservation (a wise move!), and by the time we left, the place was buzzing with guests and a line out the door. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed like family. Riccardo, the owner, personally greeted us at the door and led us to our table. His warmth and presence throughout the evening reminded me of my grandfather, who was also a restaurateur—approachable, attentive, and deeply invested in every aspect of the experience.
Our server was equally gracious and attentive, immediately acknowledging our anniversary and surprising us with two glasses of champagne along with a delicious bread service. The champagne was such a thoughtful touch that set the tone for the rest of the evening.
We started with the fried calamari, which came with crispy veggies and two dipping sauces—spicy marinara and garlic aioli. Every bite was crisp and packed with flavor.
For our entrées, we had the shortrib ravioli and the carbonara. Both were delicious! The menu was so tempting we almost couldn’t choose!
As a final treat, our server brought us a small but exquisite bite of graham-crusted vanilla gelato with strawberry to mark the occasion. It was the perfect sweet ending to a truly special meal.
Every detail, from the service to the food to the ambiance, reflects Riccardo’s passion and heart. We left feeling full, grateful, and already planning our next visit. When we’re back in Baltimore, Sotto Sopra will absolutely be on...
