VERDICT: Best breakfast joint in Boise, bar none regarding food quality. They nail the classics and positively innovate for new hits. (Caveat: parties should be 2-4 people for best results.)
FOOD: I've eaten a large swath of the menu and can tell you, their cooks are top-notch. Their technique on their eggs is perfect everytime, with no crisp fringe or undercooked spots. The sausage (andouille) is butterflied and properly browned on the surface while remaining juicy. Their potatoes (Peps) balance crisp surface with consistently soft interior and delicately seasoned so as not to blow out other flavors of the crisped cheddar or green or red pepper fried with the potatoes. They carry the crisp without the excess grease. As for the coffee, they serve Dawson Taylor's Backcountry Blend, a medium-light roast blend that blooms harmoniously with the savory of the meal. P.S. The pancakes are not a peripheral here, but are quite enjoyable in their own right. They are light, sweet, and compliment a savory breakfast here.
SERVICE: Always the best here. The fact that they keep one server for food and the other for seating and drinks makes for never an empty glass. I will say, it's a bit slower than some places for receiving your food (think 20-30 min to receive your order) but coffee or mimosa (or bellini) to punctuate conversation makes the time waited quite a pleasant experience. (Speaking of, these drinks are all quite delicious and well worth it).
ATMOSPHERE: The atmosphere carries the vibe of a bustling breakfast joint, but in a good way. It is alive with energy that doesn't undercut the intimacy of the place. With that said, this place is best for groups 2-4 people and no more unless you're willing to wait. (Popular times such as brunch will result in a wait of ~45 min for 2 persons, based on my dozen or so visits.)
REVIEW BELOW 4 YEARS OLD, BUT DIFFERENT DISHES
For all my breakfast cravings, Goldy's remains my fix. From their stellar Eggs Blackstone (eggs Benedict on ham, tomato, fried egg and English muffin) to their delectable andouille sausage, there's not a dish that will disappoint. Their real superiority to other places shines in their regular pot coffee here. It's Dawson Taylor's Backcountry Blend, a premium blend of light and medium beans roasted right here in Boise for optimum freshness. Just know you may have to wait (depending on time of day, 20 min or so for party of 2) and parties of greater than 4 will have quite the wait time (probably 40 or more). Goldy's is always worth the...
Read moreI have been wanting to come to this joint for a long time but with other local joints opening up and my husband's favorite breakfast joint we frequent, coming here was challenging. My friend wanted to meet up for breakfast and asked for some options. I threw out Goldy's and Goldy's was what we both decided on.
It's late morning on a Tuesday, I didn't know how busy it was going to be. Walking in, I was greeted and was told my table options. It was nice to be able to get in so quickly. I have heard this joint can have quite the wait time but not today. Little did I know they have an upper dining area, I thought that was pretty cool. I opted for a table on the main floor. I was quite mesmerized by the chandelier with angel wings all over the bulbs. It was a beautiful piece to look at.
I got my coffee dropped off right away. My friend and I did breeze over the menu for a while. We were like two chickens clucking trying to catch up. Our server was really patient and gave us a minute to buckle down and decide on what we wanted. For breakfast I got the 3 egg omelet with spinach, asparagus and feta. I passed on the bread and potatoes for fresh fruit.
Everything came out hot! My omelet was busting out of the seams with asparagus. It looked hearty! You can see the feta partially melted on top of it. My fruit plate was vibrant! It was beautifully plated with berries, citrus, pineapple and apple slices. The berries were fresh and tart. The strawberry was so sweet. The blueberries were firm and tasty. The orange was fresh but bland. I didn't get to try the grapefruit but it smelled devine. The pineapple was my favorite!
I had about half of my omelet! It was massive. I loved how much veggies was in the middle of it. The spinach and asparagus was cooked perfectly! I don't know what it was about the texture of the eggs but I didn't really like it. The eggs were stiff and not really fluffy. It was foamy like. I have had some omelets where the eggs are fluffy but in this case it wasn't like that. It was still good but it's probably something I wouldn't order again.
I'm happy I finally got to check out this joint. It's a landmark for Boise and I can see why. It's tiny, vibrant and fun plus it's been around for years. I love the vibe here very much! Our server did a great job taking care of us today. Coffee was hot and the food was fresh. It was a great day to check it out. I finally get to mark Goldy's off...
