If you’re looking for a high-end, “chain” steakhouse in the Financial District- you have to give Ruth’s Chris a visit.
Ruth’s Chris is known for their signature steaks cooked to perfection with plenty of butter and served sizzling on a 500-degree plate. They’re also well known for their classic sides, like creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. You’ll also find a solid selection of appetizers and fresh seafood!
We decided to stop in to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. We are not big fans of Turkey, we find it dry. So, I decided to visit the location inside of “Old City Hall”. The location is certainly unique and the architecture is absolutely stunning.
The location is located right inside the main entrance of Old City Hall. The interior boasts gothic architecture and rich woods. We specifically booked our reservation for the main dining room. They do have a dining room in the front, back, as well as downstairs.
We were seated relatively quickly. The hostesses seemed to have an issue pulling up and “confirming” our reservation, but this was fixed promptly and we were guided to our table. It was in the main rear dining room, as requested. It was a table for two and everything was set perfectly.
We both decided to go with Ruth’s Classic Prix Fixe Menu. That comes with a starter- Caesar Salad, Steakhouse Salad, or Lobster Bisque. I opted for the steakhouse salad. The salad was crisp and fresh. The portion was also very generous. However, it lacked any “toppings”, for a lack of a better term.
There were maybe two-three grape tomatoes halves. They also way overdid it on the red onion. I was lucky to find two-three mini croutons. They could certainly improve the salads.
Next, you choose your choice of entree. They offer both surf and turf options. Given it was Thanksgiving, they also offered a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with oven-roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, and more. We are not fans of turkey, but seeing it come out it was a good size portion and many folks had leftovers to take home with them.
I decided to go with the 6-ounce filet and lobster tail. I opted for the Bleu Cheese “Crust” for a small up-charge. It is just right, it doesn’t overpower the flavor of the beef. My companion ordered the same, except they opted for the Truffle “Crust”.
You also get a personal-size side of your choice. I do wish they offered all their sides as an option. However, you cannot go wrong with Ruth’s Creamed Spinach and Garlic Mashed Potatoes! The sides are large enough for two to share, in my opinion.
To finish off the meal, you also get a personal-sized dessert! You typically would get a mini, traditional cheesecake. Given it was Thanksgiving, they offered mini Pumpkin Cheesecake. It is served with a small scoop of ice cream. We took ours to go. It was so-so. You can upgrade to a different dessert for an up-charge.
Service was top-notch and our server was phenomenal. She ensured we had everything we needed and were completely satisfied. They are always ensuring your water is topped off and that the table is clean and tidy. For a high-end “chain”, the service is very attentive.
The food was top-notch. The steaks were cooked perfectly, medium rare. They were flavorful, juicy, tender, and seasoned just-right. They came out with that signature sizzle on that 500-degree plate.
If you’re looking for a consistent, reliable, high-end chain steakhouse in the financial district, I’d certainly suggest...
Read moreTotally Disgusted with our most recent visit. My partner and I brought a family member who was visiting. The restaurant was quite it was approx 4:10pm on a Saturday. We all ordered the prefix which was an appetizer, entree and a dessert. We all decided on the same entree, the filet mignon and lobster tail. Our entree's arrived and we began to eat when my partner cut into his steak and took a bite. He said to me (I'm the steak eater in the family) that something doesn't taste right. He smelled his steak and asked that I do the same. I immediately knew something wasn't right, the steak was clearly bad. We promptly notified our server. I informed her that something certainly wasn't right and asked that she smell the steak and bring it to the chef. She was extremely apologetic and said that she would address the issue right away. As she walked away I saw her smell the steak and you could tell by the look on her face that she realized that something was wrong. She returned and informed us that they were preparing another plate and that the manager should be over to speak with us. The server brought out a new entree for my partner, he'd lost his appetite and told me that he would take it to go. After "a while" the manager (a younger man) came over and was very apologetic. He even said that the box that of steaks that had just been opened (meaning those that myself, my partner and our family member) had received our steaks from was checked and that they were clearly bad and that they were disposed of. He asked how the steak was that the server had just brought out and my partner informed him that he had lost his appetite and that we would take it to go. He said that he would take my partners meal off of the check and the drinks (my partner and family member had two mixed drinks) would be taken off of the bill. I was flabbergasted, you just told us that the box of steaks that had just been opened and served to all of us had to be disposed of because they were bad and your still going to charge us for the meals??? I didn't want to argue or create a scene. Our server came over and asked if we still wanted our desserts. We told her that everyone at the table had lost there appetite and that we'd take them to go along with my partners entree. Well here is more of an insult!! On Sunday (the next day) my partner reheated the entree that he had taken home in the oven. He cut into it and again said something didn't smell right and wanted me to smell it. Omg, it smelled just as bad as the steak that he was served at the restaurant. We threw the meal out. This Ruth Chris location had been my go to. I will not return, this location lost a...
Read moreWent for dinner tonight. Second time trying a Ruth's Chris steakhouse, the first was in New York. Both visits have paled in comparison to Mortons. Tonight I had the shrimp cocktail, the bone-in filet, and split a baked potato with my husband who had the seabass and the calamari. The calamari and shrimp were good but apps are better at Mortons, as is the bread. The seabass was delicate and rich and mildly nauseated my husband. My steak was good at the edges but was way underdone near the bone. For dessert we had creme Brule and chocolate cake. The cake was hard like it hadn't been properly thawed but still rich and tasty. The creme Brule was good but the sugar was cold which means it was pre-made and stored in the fridge. That's a no-no in fine dining. We also had cappuccinos which were very creamy, strong, and good. I had a blueberry mohito which was weak, I didn't get rum flavor at all. My husband had a flat diet coke. The manager was very helpful as he seated us but never checked back in. We had three different people bringing us food and weren't ever sure who was our wait staff person until the bill came. Only after we finished each course did anyone ask how things were and they did this while clearing the plates. At that sage, what's the point of asking? When the bill came, we had trouble with our card because we used a card for the first time while traveling out of state. I had done the pre-work of notifying the company ahead of our travel that we would be out of town and yet still they put a fraud hold on the charge. We called the card and then were able to get the charge to go thru. I say all this because I was trying to explain what happened to our waitress to ease the awkward moment and she kept cutting me off and then said "as long as you have the money to pay for your food, that's all we care about." Of course, that made us feel worse. If you are in Boston, please read my review of Mortons from a few nights ago where we paid for a party of 6 with no expense spared and you will see not only did I have the money for Ruth's Chris, I can afford to be discerning in how I advise my fellow diners. Trust me, skip this place and head to Mortons, or another steakhouse for a good steak dinner that will surely provide better food...
