My wife and I went here for our anniversary. Sadly we were disappointed...
Starting with service, it was a weekday evening and the place was not very busy so they only had 1 waiter for the restaurant. Service was in no way slow but the waiter always seemed like we were bothering him, or wasting his time when he spoke to us. My wife and I are in our mid 20s and it felt he was condescending towards us because of that. However he was attentive and made sure we had what we needed, and that our drinks were filled.
The food was certainly not worth the price. I've been all over America, and been to many different steak houses. This one was definitely towards the bottom of my list. I got the ribeye my wife got the NY strip. The steaks were very decent in size! More than one meal, however, that's about where the praise stops. My wife did seem to enjoy her steak but definitely did not rave about it. My steak on the other hand was a good 10 or so degrees under. I ordered medium rare I got it pretty rare, dark red center and bleeding. Now I'm not too picky and I don't mind rare steaks, especially at a nicer establishment. I thought that it was probably a good quality steak, and the flavor would make up for it... I was wrong, the steak was chewy all the way through, and probably 20% was inedible as it had a lot of cartilage and sinew. The rest of the steak was just bland, it needed salt badly and probably much more than that. I got the Bordelaise sauce which I usually love, but I found this one to be very boring, it barely added anything to the steak. My wife got some of their in house steak sauce which was actually pretty good considering I'm usually not a fan. Other than that we got mash potatoes to share which were not bad but mostly unremarkable. For appetizers we got Cajun shrimp. They were good, not great. Maybe 7/10, and the cocktails were decent tasting and strong.
The atmosphere was probably the best part, it was nothing spectacular but it felt fitting for the restaurant. The decor was rather beautiful, and the overall feel was classy but quiet. The one thing I was not a fan of was the tables, or at least the one we sat at. The tables were tiny, we sat in a booth that could probably seat 4 but our table could barely support the 2 of us, keep in mind my wife and I are probably 250 pounds put together.
Now I understand that sometimes places just have an off night, and a weekday is probably not when they are bringing their "A" game. I will also note that I had friends who suggested this place and they all said they really enjoyed it. I however, did not find this place to be too great, and especially not for the almost $150 per person.
I hope you can form your own opinion, and maybe I'll give this place another shot down the road, but I don't think it will be...
Read morei was celebrating my birthday on 8/2/20 and we decided to patronize the Famous. The waiter was fair but never came over to check on us. We where halfway into our meal and a older female waitress asked us if we need a box and we said not yet, it was around the time that they where closing soon. So after we finished our meal the waiter asked us if we needed boxes and we said yes, so he brought them-over and we boxed up our food, but i have been there before and they normally do that. So when the waiter and the older waitress came over to our table we where trying to close the box but having a time with it and the male said " oh they are hard to close" . I told him i thought the wait staff boxes up the food and the older female said " because of everything going on we don't do that anymore, and that made sense to me. Not 30 seconds later i saw the older waitress taking boxes to another table with a couple not of color and she began to box up there food. I stopped her on her way back and asked her i thought you couldn't box up food and she said oh we can't but we can do it at the table. So she tried to backtrack what she said and said i would of boxed up your food, but that's not what she told us at first.. That was very upsetting to me and I felt unjustly treated. In today's society with everything going on, i fell this should not be happening. I came to the Famous to celebrate my birthday and left upset. This will be the last time i patronize this establishment. i understand that with the corona virus things have changed with the way things are handled in a restaurant, but the other couple that was there it didn't seem like they insisted on there food being boxed up at the table , it was just done for them. I would have rather boxed up my food anyway, but when i saw the other couple food being boxed up that's when it hit a sore spot. So your staff needs to keep the same protocol with all of...
Read moreEasily one of the best dinner experiences of my life! (and if you knew me you would be impressed with that statement since I am VERY PICKY)
I've lived most of my life in Colorado Springs (30 years) and up until 2/22/19 I had never been to The Famous - no explanation, just didn't make it a point to go. I decided to surprise my teenage daughter with the nicest dinner I could find in Colorado Springs based upon reading reviews for the Father Daughter Dance at Rocky Mountain Calvary and I'm so glad I selected The Famous. The staff was friendly and very attentive. When I had to call letting them know I was running 30 min late for our reservation the woman I spoke with was friendly and said "no problem we'll make it work." Wow.
Jeffrey, our server, greeted us with a smile and was a pleasure to work with throughout our dinner. He forewarned us about the serving sizes when my daughter and I excitedly began ordering more than what 2 people could consume - lots of amazing options on the menu! (We still ended up with quite a bit of food to take home which was fine with my wife and son!)
While the pricing is on the higher side you do get what you pay for. The quality of the food, presentation of the food, portion sizes, and flavors justified the investment in my mind. I would rather pay more for the aforementioned positive dining experience than less and get a mediocre, mainstream experience which seems to be offered with greater and greater proclivity in our day and age of hyper-competitive so-so processed dining experiences.
The live piano playing was an unexpected treat towards the end of our meal. We almost didn't leave for the Father Daughter Dance since we were enjoying the music and the old school Chicago ambiance so much!
If this first visit is indicative of what to expect each and every time I'll definitely be back again and again (I need to make up for missing out on 30yrs of not going to...
