There were nine of us celebrating two birthdays. We knew upfront there was an automatic 20% tip added to our bill, but we did not expect the service we were NOT given! We already had our food before we got our drinks. My sister-in-law accidentally spilt her gin and tonic and it was 20 minutes before they replaced it. They never came back to ask if we needed any refills. One of our guys had to go and ask if we could have refills on the vegetables. They never asked us how the meal was. When we got ready to leave, we needed four large to go boxes. No one ever brought them to us. One of the guys got up and went and found the boxes and brought them to us. We brought our own dessert. We had to clear our own table because nobody came back to check on us. So we carried all of our dirty dishes and set them in the room behind us. When the girls saw what we were doing, she brought us plates and ice cream sandwiches. When she brought our bill, she did however, tell us to take note of the fact that 20% tip was already added. We have been coming to Slogars since before 1970s. We have never had this kind of an experience. We go nearly every year. I do not know that we will ever go again. I have been told that they have changed ownership. I don’t know if that was the reason for such horrible service or lack there of. I’m not certain, but it was very disappointing. The food was good as always, but unfortunately, the lack of service overshadowed that. It was apparent that knowing you were already getting $117 tip that there was no need to put forth very much effort. Our bill totaled over $700. I think we could have expected a little...
Read moreFrom a southerners perspective: Really pretty average. For the money, quality, and experience go to the Breadery. First, the chicken was incredibly average and the sides, while plentiful, were very bland. The pre-fixe 3rd course dessert was an ice cream sandwich from a box which felt like a missed opportunity for any number of homemade southern delights. Plus overall just disappointing. I get the nostalgic aspect but we felt very let down after this build up of a coursed menu! In reality the first course should have been part of the sides, it was Cole slaw and the like and was taken away once the chicken arrived. The kids options were fried chicken $19 or mac n cheese $22, however at 545pm we were told they were out of mac and cheese. Everyone at the table must order, kids included, so the only other option was sides only for $19. Adult chicken is $39 and includes 4 pieces (half bird). You do get a lot of food with all of the sides, if you want it. We did not. We had two kids with us who struggle to finish their own portions.
We had made a reservation more than 30 days in advance and walked in at the same time as another group of the same size (also with kids) without a reservation who were seated at the nicest table. Not a huge deal but certainly added to the mediocre experience. On the outside, the building is period and looks original with some cool features. The inside felt like a bit of hodge podge of past restaurants decor but was clean.
Overall a lot of missed opportunities in terms of taste and ambiance and just a disappointment for the price. Especially when you consider the other...
Read moreWant to start with a disclaimer: I am from the South, recently moved to FOCO. So, this review may not be as useful to westerners because they seem to have a different palate and would probably love this place. But for anyone East of the Mississippi and Kentucky-below:
The good: beautiful little location, interior, and atmosphere. The chutney was good. Creamed corn was good and kinda how my Grandmom makes it, who ate with us lol. Service was timely and nice. The drink menu was large in terms of wines and spirits.
The meh: biscuits and chicken were aiight. Cooked well, just lacking any real flavor/seasoning.
The bad: got the additional side mac and cheese, it was bad. Think any version of mac should be creamy, or creamy-inside if baked with some sort of topping. This was prepared with mostly hard italian cheeses i would guess and arrived at the table congealed/hard. It also simply didn't taste good. The mashed potatoes were literally just mashed, potatoes(maybe they added butter?) with a sprinkle of paprika on top. I mean, throw some cream or cream cheese in there too. Real ones put all that and little bit of bacon drippings salt and pepper, little Lawrys and cayenne. The cocktail menu had maybe six selections, of which all but two had some sort of pepper in it(nothing wrong with spicy cocktails, thought that was kinda cool). I got one of the two without a pepper in it: the Oh Nee' Nee' and wasn't a fan.
I didnt try: coleslaw, salad, or the sammies.
I am from Memphis and going to reserve my opinion of the ribs because I am admittedly a bbq snob, don't think its fair...
