To start off let’s just say that I love the cart driver in rino, my favorite pizza in denver and the best late night happy hour, in a neighborhood meant for a late night happy hour. However, they have 6 tables and a small enough space that you can walk the entire area to find a table in 5 seconds. It is also the perfect size for the small oven they use to make each pizza amazing. BUT when you try to take this amazing small pizza store style and make it into a restaurant you have to change. And they didn’t change at all. I’ll start my complaints in number format here but first I’ll say My girlfriend said while waiting over an hour for a pizza “maybe god is punishing me”.
They moved in a family/residential neighborhood and run a late night happy hour. Seems rude. They even put up notices not to be loud all while they offer $5 drinks till midnight. They have so many tables that are scattered oddly about with two bars. Confusing lay out for a hostess to sit people. BUT it’s the same style as there hip 6 table place in rino! It doesn’t work at all. It’s too big and too hard to try to find and fight for a seat. It feels like fighting. The small rino shop is known for the quick and smart services. The pizza comes out within 10 minutes smoking hot. We waited an hour for a pizza that takes 10 minutes at the other shop. We also got our food before the people before us. Which seems messed up to wait an hour and watch the people after you eat first. Harsh life at Cart Driver Lohi They didn’t really expand the menu. Hard to hate too much here when they do nail it at the other place but it’s a restaurant now. Expanded cocktail menu is hit and miss. The more complex you go the worse it gets.
As a fan of the other Cart Driver I am rooting for this one to improve. Pizza was delicious but not the piping hot I’ve come to love and expect from Cart Driver. I’ll be back in a...
Read moreMy girlfriend wanted to visit Cart Driver Lo-Hi as it was one of her favorite Pizza joints before a tragic water leak scenario closed it down for renovations for about 13 months. We went there this week and sat outside facing the street on a lovely evening. Side note: pretty good people watching from the patio seats which all face the street in a bar counter style setup.
We orded two oysters each to try them out, two pizzas, a salad and my girlfriend had two glasses of wine. Out the door with Tip our total was something like 125 dollars which I found to be slightly on the high side considering the portion size of the pizzas. Outside of what I would deems to be slightly overpriced food the food was good and you can tell a lot of care goes into their offerings.
The surprise of the night was actually the salad which we thoroughly enjoyed with its crunchy house made croutons that were more of a bread crumb on the salad than a true crouton. It add a nice texture to the salad which was dressed well and adorned with a nice variety of ingredients.
The sourdough pizza dough was pretty good as well. Neapolitan style pizza isn't my favorite, I should give that caveat here. I am more of an east coast style crispy undercarriage type of guy. That being said the crust had a nice chew and flavor to it. Obviously a quality product.
The restaurant was very inviting inside and it's always nice when you can see the cooks operating in the kitchen. Compared to white pie which we feel has decreased in quality a bit since we began going there this offering stood up very well. For our money we still enjoy Pizzeria Leopold in Lakewood for our go to spot but this is a great option if you are in LOHI and can afford the rather...
Read moreI have no objection to the service. The service was great, waitress excellent. Restaurant ambiance was fine.
However it has been a long time since I have been ( as well the entire group of six people I came with) disappointed and even mad over the kind of over priced menu that is served.
I’m not hard to please, I know how to appreciate a grocery store frozen pizza, just like how I know what a fine Napolitano style pizza is supposed to taste like from my many years of living in France and traveling through Europe.
Most personal pizzas were in the 16- 20 dollar range with the signature Cart Driver pizza (pictured in this review) merely being thin bread with sausage, a modicum of cheese, and kale bits sprinkled on top for 19 dollars. The Hawaiian pizza also contained zero cheese. The pasta dishes for 16 dollars each were mediocre portions at best, and certainly not enough to make you feel satisfied, or feel like it was okay to pay that much money for what you ordered.
I cannot believe the good reviews this place has. I don’t know if their marketing is excellent, or if it’s just the trendy place of the moment, but it seems like many people have simply not come across good authentic Italian pizza. This place, and the quality of the food, is not high enough were it would even seem slightly reasonable to charge extra for the bread basket.
I do not recommend this place, you’re honestly better off getting a dollar pizza off Broadway. You’ll be happier with what you paid for, and to be honest, I’m sure it would taste better. Save your money and go...
