I don’t know what to say but the bar person was not welcoming as I feel my husband and I were immediately judged as we walked in. We have travelled over from Sydney Australia for a five week holiday and three weeks in of travelling from LA on our way to Portland to spend Christmas with friends we were met with hostility and judgement before we even spoke. One of the first statements to be made by the bar person when we asked about a cocktail was “As long as there’s no hate speech” Without much of a word we asked if there was bourbon and coke, the reply was yes what kind of bourbon ? in which I replied well we’ve had bulldog bourbon before in America in which he replied “ we don’t serve that bourbon it’s homophonic ! “ he then proceeded to serve four other people that came into the bar after us and ignored us. We felt pretty awful and uncomfortable so we left in which he shouted out “have a lovely evening” having come from Australia for a holiday we are not familiar of all the types of whisky’s but also the general treatment was hostile to say the least.
We gathered there was an agenda going on and having strong ties back in Australia with the Sydney Gay Mardi grass through my husbands work in graphic design and marketing, my own trade as a Therapist working with youth LGBT in the heart of Sydney we found this quite shocking to be judged based on our appearance and ordering the wrong bourbon and as a very normal 60,and 65year olds in jeans and jumpers. The very attitude of this person behind the bar not wanting hate speech, homophobia did exactly that and ruined our time on our first night out here. Very very...
Read moreFirst time at The Speakeasy and it already feels like I've stumbled upon Eureka's best-kept secret! Aptly named 'Speakeasy', it's a cozy gem tucked away in Opera Alley. Stepping inside, I braced myself for just another drink, but boy, was I in for a treat! The ambiance was intimate with a sprinkle of patrons sipping away. Ordered an old fashioned with a unique bourbon twist. And can we talk about those crushed marchiano cherries? A game changer! Now, every time I think old fashioned, I'll be craving this unique touch.
The backdrop of soulful r&b, a delightful blend of classics and fresh hits, set the mood just right. Not to mention, the mural outside? Pure artistry! But the cherry on top (pun intended) was the lovely conversation with a fellow patron and her delightful parents. The open-heartedness and warmth of the place is palpable.
Can't wait for my next visit to The Speakeasy. Hoping for another round of that perfect drink and perhaps another heartwarming chat. Cheers to 5/5...
Read moreWe didn't have any food. Stopped by for Live Music, and were luck enough to get 2 seats at the end of the bar. A lot of women, and most of the customers were local, well known to both the artist, and the bartender. Friendly, jovial atmosphere... and JAZZ. Strong deep bar back, and Craft Cocktail skills evident. No cover charge, the band worked off of a tip jar (tip the band, heavily!!). We were there for sets 2 & 3. Walked up during the first break where the Lead Singer started singing, "Here they are just a walkin' down the street." and we started singing along. The bad: it isn't very big, and it isn't anywhere NEAR our house. We parked about a few blocks away, but it is a slightly sleepy, pleasant down town area, and it seemed quite safe to us. The barman (I forget his name) was quite skilled, and the cocktails were top notch. Nice glassware, and attention to detail at every step. IF you are in the mood for live music, don't...
