I was scared to post about our shocking experience last night until I read the other 3 reviews mentioning a very similar experience. Now I know we weren't imaging things, this restaurant is racist. My husband & I have not had time for a date together in almost 2 years with two kids under two & my husband just graduated from nursing school. We were finally able to plan a babysitter to celebrate both his graduation and birthday. This was supposed to be a special night. We saw Camp on a list of the top restaurants in the country. We made reservations for 8:30pm so we could get the babies to bed & not stress about the sitter having trouble. We got downtown early enough to go look at the waterfall from the Liberty Bridge where we got engaged & walk over with time to spare. When we arrived we were the 2nd couple in the entrance area. The hostess seemed extremely stressed & eventually finally asked our name. She asked us to stand aside, so we did. 4 more couples arrived & she proceeded to seat all of them & left us just standing there. The 4th couple was looking at us & whispering like they knew exactly what we were thinking and they shouldn't be going before us since we were there first (& had a reservation that had now passed). We knew why we were being put to the back of the line but were really hoping it wasn't true. My husband was the only black person in the entire restaurant. He began to communicate his awareness of the crowd & atmosphere we were entering. I asked if he wanted to leave. He said we should stay because now getting food this late elsewhere would be tough plus we had the babysitter etc. We wish we left. We were finally seated around 8:50 pm. No apology or explanation were made for the wait. The hostess said she would bring us a drink menu (of course we were wanting to celebrate) & took at least 10 more minutes to get that. The waitress came over within the minute. She didn't introduce herself, ask if we had been there before, tell us about restaurant week (we only found out it was going on when we saw the menu), or ask if we were out celebrating anything. She just asked if we know what we want in a very short tone. We weren't ready of course because we just got the drink menu & we asked for another minute. We decided on drinks, appetizers, entrees & looked around for the waitress who didn't come back for a long time. We looked around seeing table after table seated after us getting drinks & food. We felt more & more uncomfortable but were essentially out of options at this point. We sipped on room temp water while we waited, (we weren't offered anything else) now starving & eager to cheers to my hubby's hard work becoming a nurse & us getting a chance to be together. We ordered two appetizers plus every sea/land entree from the restaurant week menu. Someone brought our first appetizer around 9:15pm (meanwhile the 4 tables that were seated before us were drinking & eating entrees). Once we had eaten our 2 appetizers the waitress came back over to take away empty plates & as she approached I started to say "hey we never got our (drinks)" in a nice tone letting her know. Before I could finish my sentence, she said "I know" "It's going to be a little while". No apology, no explanation, didn't ask how the food was, didn't say anything else, & didn't come back for a long time. We couldn't believe this was happening. We finally got our drinks sometime mid meal. We had ordered the drinks as something to have before the food, & were intending on drinking wine with our meal. She never asked if we wanted anything else to drink. "She is the Moment" drink tasted like watered down strawberry juice. The next time we saw her she was asking if we had room for dessert & gave us the check. We always tip well & proceeded to tip her over 20% as not to be further profiled by some stereotype. The only person to smile & acknowledge our existence was the chef as we were walking out. Sad that our special night & money were wasted on such a hateful place and that this kind of hate still exists here...
Read moreMy wife and I scheduled a five day trip to Greenville. It was our first time in the city. We were here for one business meeting and the rest of the time to relax.
For our first dinner we chose The Trappe Door, a Belgian restaurant located below ground in a space designed to look like an old European pub/tavern.
Our server Sierra did a great job helping us pick some favorites off the menu. To start we tried their version of Beef Tartare. Served on tasty crostinis with a lemon pesto it paired perfectly with Westmalle Dubbel beer and Getrank Veltliner wine.
We followed the beef with a Flemish Onion Soup. Unlike its French cousin, this soup had a puree potatoe base with small pieces of bread and gruyere cheese. We liked this version which was much lighter than what people expect from onion soup despite the potatoes.
We kept focusing on the appetizers and tried the Baked Brie. The cheese was beautifully wrapped in a puff pastry and served on a framboise reduction. I had to ask what that was, but your taste bads will answer, sweet and savory goodness. Apple slices, crackers and honey glazed pecans served as accoutrements.
We finished our meal by sharing the Sautéed Duck Breast that was drizzled with a cherry beer sauce and served with shallot and bacon-diced potatoes and asparagus. The asparagus was the size of California Redwood trees, but the potatoes were cooked perfectly and soaked up the leftover cherry sauce. Paired the duck with a Kasteel Donker Quad.
Sierra's service was excellent despite being very busy on a Tuesday night. Ask for her and she will help you maximize your experience. If you have a free night in town check this place out over others who get more hype. When my wife and I were planning our trip to Greenville, we chose CAMP Modern American Eatery as the first restaurant to visit. The menu looked fantastic.
After our dinner was completed, I would say the food was not just fantastic, is was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Yes it is made up word, but it has a made up meaning too: "extraordinarily good, wonderful."
Executive Chef Diego Campos has crafted a menu that has a very unique blend of flavors for his dishes using a wide variety of ingredients from different cusines.
We tried three of his creations during our visit: Goat Cheese Gnudi, Seared Scallops and the Jamon Iberico.
OK, I know Jamon Iberico with cantaloupe balls is not creating new territory, but I have a love affair with this meat. I did not cheat on my wife with this meat. I shared it with her. She loved it too.
The Goat Cheese Gudi dish, on the other hand, illustrates his talent. The dish features two perfected deep fried goat cheese balls with Black Mission Figs, brunoised Granny Smith Apples and pistachios all tossed in browned butter and honey. The components together will treat your mouth to an explosion of flavors.
The Seared Scallops dish features four medium-size scallops on top of a semi-firm corn pudding. Cilantro, pepita gremolata, chorizo foam and cippolini onions surround the corn pudding. With a myriad of flavors assaulting your pallet all at once, it's hard to say what is the best part of the entrée.
The service is excellent and the staff can talked in great details about the dishes, showing the Chef has prepared his team well to interact with customers.
If you're in Greenville, this place needs to be on your list of places to visit. You will become an apostle like me once you...
Read moreThis restaurant should be a 2 star Michelin starred restaurant! Where should I start. From the time you enter, there are three hostesses ready to help. Asking question's- do you want to sit outside, in side, close to the bar or a larger table to share better in a kind, friendly and helpful tone. Our party of four just wanted a quiet table to catch up and talk. Which they accommodated. The waitress was prompt asked us if we had any food allergies, or any issues she should be made aware of. There were none. She also asked us if we have been there before? We haven't so she mentioned that they serve tapas portions and that we should/could share them.
Where do I start everything was fresh, delicious, outstanding and seemed to be picked that morning. We started with the pickled vegetable's. THEY WERE DELICIOUS! No-heavenly! The menu changes often. We had dish with only 3 items but the waitress was able to include 4 for us instead of the need to do a 2x order. Then it was a blur-more meat dishes, several fish dishes while engaging in conversation with our table. During the evening , I was in the need of another drink and none of the listed cocktails enticed me. I mentioned this to our waitress and she asked me what was my favorite adult beverage .... vodka. Did I have any additions or flavors I disliked. None. SO she went to the beverage manger who made me a drink. It was outstanding-It was fruity, fresh, different, enjoyable, and it was the perfect blend of ingredients. My wife tried mine , loved it and ordered one for her. No idea the name of it. The beverage manger stopped by just to see how we liked the drink. We told him we didn't like the drink at all we LOVED it. Later the manager happened to stop by, the whole table talked to her , asked her several questions and we found out that this wasn't her real job! She loved this restaurant so much that after her day job as a dental hygienist she came to work here. She was a delight to talk with and a true people person. The Pastry Chef Lindsay Beck’s creations were out of this world. What a gifted, ingenious, innovative chef! Her desserts are mind blowing . Yes, I know you will not have room BUT just try-any one of her creations and be blown away.
This restaurant deserves to be Michelin rated -it has incredible farm to table cuisine , it is detail oriented, customer focused and deserving with talented staff, ingenious chefs and...
