Our daughter attended Clemson from out of state and we fell in love with Greenville. It is a beautiful city filled with wonderful restaurants. We have never had a bad experience until we decided to celebrate her latest birthday at this restaurant. She remained in Greenville after graduating We have visited many local establishments. I waited two days after our experience to give myself time to give an honest review. We did have reservations on a Thursday evening at 7:30 pm. The restaurant did not seem especially busy. We were greeted by a hostess that seemed confused. Once we were seated our waitress was less than pleasant. We attempted to make our experience positive despite the inattention of our waitress and her obvious annoyance. Luckily another waitress stepping in. The table next to us turned twice and we were still struggling to make the best of the evening. I ask another waitress to please do something for my daughter’s birthday. She stated they could do a small desert with a candle and would pass the info to our waitress. This occasion was also listed on our reservation. After 2.5 hours our waitress handed us the bill. At this time I requested my daughter’s step outside and ask to speak to a manager. The manager promptly told me they were busy! The food was good and I do not mind waiting for a good meal. If there are delays communication is the key to good service. Unfortunately the management and staff did not communicate or apologize for the lack of service. Please know this is not an establishment meant for special occasions. I deeply regret choosing it for our youngest daughter’s birthday dinner. My oldest daughter flew in for her sister’s special day and insists we did not receive the service we saw others receive because their father was not with us. The next day we had dinner at a restaurant worthy of Greenville’s reputation to celebrate. It was the first time in six years we have been disappointed in an encounter in this beautiful city. The response of the manager was unacceptable and unapologetic despite my obvious distress over the situation. A kind word and genuine concern would have gone a long way to rectify...
Read moreWas so excited to try The Trappe Door in Greenville, South Carolina. We moved to Charlotte from New York City a few years ago and truly missed a real Belgian restaurant so wanted to try it while we were on vacation. The ambience was super cool. Very dark but had amazing touches. It almost felt like we were in Brussels. They had an amazing selection of Belgian beers on draft and bottle. The food was ok. They had many options of Moules Frites- we had the coconut curry. It was a nice sized portion with a lot of broth and bread. We also had the Brussels sprout salad which was delicious- crunchy and had a fantastic dressing. Might have been my favorite thing. The steak tartare was also very good- it was already served on baguette. The baked Brie came with apples and crackers. We also had a play on a French Onion soup which was nothing like a French Onion soup. Not sure why they even call it that. The waitress explained it before we ordered it. That was the saddest part of our experience- the service. As you can tell by my profile, I go out to eat, A LOT. The Trappe Door might have had the worst service I’ve ever experienced- ANYWHERE. All of our food was cold. Our apps might have taken 40-50 mins. They said they make their own ginger beer so I ordered a Moscow Mule (it was great). My bf ordered a Duvel beer. It sat on the bar for 15-20 mins before we were served. We ordered our dinner when she brought the apps and that took another 25 mins. We saw so many drinks just sitting at the bar. I know restaurants are short staffed but our waitress didn’t care at all- I don’t think she apologized once. We still gave her 20% because that’s how we are but the service ruined our last night in Greenville. Was sad too because we were really looking forward to this meal/experience. Hopefully our dinner was just...
Read moreWe decided to give this place a try, as we've never had Belgian food before (unless you count Belgian waffles 😛). The restaurant was very accommodating to our specific diet, which is the carnivore diet. This was a great way to start our experience.
The restaurant has an almost Celtic/Vikings theme, complete with wooden menus, whiskey barrels along the walls, and low ambient lighting, as though you were dining in candle light.
The food was decent, but certain items lacked flavor. Then again, we DID order the items without the sides and sauces due to our animal based diet, so that's partly the reason. We liked the salmon, ribs, and steak but we didn't really enjoy the duck.
The check came and our mouths dropped. For two people that had a few pieces of meat and fish (see the photos) it came out to $170. We added two pieces of burger patties to go for our daughter. Once we added the $10 tip, it brought it up to $180.
Upon our exit, the "lady" with glasses who "served" us (possibly named "Kati" according to the receipt) literally said "ten dollars...ten dollars," as though she should have received more simply because it was almost $200 for two people. That was disrespectful to hear and ruined the experience.
First of all, it wasn't like she waited hand and foot on us. They bring you a bottle of water and you serve yourself. The only thing she did was bring us our food and get us some lemon and ice. That's it.
Imagine the sense of entitlement someone must have when you turn your nose up at $10 for very little effort. That alone will be enough to keep us from coming to the Trappe Door again.
If you do decide to come here, make sure that your wallet matches your appetite!!! This is a one and done for us...
