I give three stars. Reason being, it leaves room for improvement without suggesting a below grade experience. Being as objective as possible for a first time customer the food was average for a small establishment setting with limited chef capabilities. It felt homemade, presented homemade and had a small “just off the bayou” diner feel to it. As with most seafood in the south you have the options of fried, fried, and if you’re feeling froggy.... fried. It’s not a bad thing, but a grilled/seared option would be a nice touch to a growing restaurant.
The gumbo is going to be slightly different anywhere you go. Can’t be picky on that! As long as it includes the basics! It smelled very good and looked on par. I wish I would have gotten it. Same goes for the creole.
The shrimp pasta, was heavily sauced and felt... processed. As did the chicken pasta. Like it was poured out of a pre-made frozen entree bag. It tasted fine, but lacked the feel, texture and look of a fresh tossed Cajun pasta.
The salads are...... salads.
Overall, the dishes did not reflect the high price tag for them. I felt as if you were paying for the novelty of a Cajun diner in Hendersonville and not the extraordinary food that comes from Louisiana.
My biggest observation upon entering the restaurant was the lack of atmosphere of an advertised Cajun cafe. There were a few parade masks on the wall and some put together shadow boxes of beads and Mardi Gras relatable items. But the colors of the room were light, coffee shop colors. No reds, blacks, darks colors. The lighting was dim but that’s it. And no music or ambient background noise to settle out the patrons conversations. Accordions? Bayou acoustics? Something, anything? For a 12 table establishment the sounds of guests easily travel considering the cramped quarters. A friendly suggestion!
With some improvements and vamp. This place could be a cornerstone in Hendersonville and well liked! It has potential! Just a few finishing touches and seating arrangements. “2 top”guests being seated at “4 top” tables leaves larger parties in the waiting area for far too long.
If anything, go for the butter pecan bread pudding and pecan ice cream. It was amazing and the best desert I’ve had in a long time. The portion was huge and it was a great sweet note to...
Read moreFinally got our chance to dine at Dat's Cajun Cafe and they didn't disappoint. Friendly greeting on our way in and excellent service throughout our meal. I spent my first 23 years in Uptown New Orleans and found the menu included many of my lifelong favorites. I had the Gumbo and it was delicious. No skimping on portions here and if you're expecting a bowl of rice and gravy with a few things added think again. This bowl is full of goodness with tons of shrimp, sausage, chicken, and some crawfish tails tossed in as a little lagniappe! And fried catfish is a side??? Yes please! My wife had the Roast Beef Po-Boy and it was true NOLA style with debris. (grab some napkins). I was able to wash my meal down with a cold Abita Amber! A treat cuz they are hard to find here. Of course when we spotted Pecan Pie Bread Pudding on the special board we had to try it and we sure were glad we did! The whole time we were there my foot was tapping to some zydeco and more of the music enjoyed down on da bayou. Did I mention that the service was excellent? Friendly and attentive staff made sure we were well taken care of. Looking forward...
Read moreOur first time here this evening. Not many tables were taken and the service was promptly at the table with menus and requesting drink orders. They were unfortunately out of Gator bites but there were literally two left but they cooked them for us so we could try them. They were outstanding! My issue now was I only got to eat one! I tried the Gumbo and the wife had the beef and baked mac. Everything was excellent and I have zero reservation about going back. For dessert we tried the pecan bread pudding, again...it was awesome! We got it to go but had a bite of it 15 minutes after leaving. It was cold and there wasn't any typical icing but it was great anyway! I could definitely see this being better hot with a little icing and a scoop of good vanilla ice cream. We both ate our fill and still have enough for a decent lunch tomorrow so the portions are more than adequate. If you like Cajun give them a shot, I know I will be going back to try other menu item...probably the shrimp...
