I got a few treats from here last week just to try it out. I honestly didn't have crazy high hopes because the whole concept just seems kind of tired to me. I was also really turned off by the use of AI generated imagery for the promotion of the restaurant before it opened. I will say my expectations were at least met, though mostly not exceeded.
This restaurant took the spot of Trashy Dawg but is owned and operated by the same parent company -- along with Agave and Rye just across the way. It's convenient to one of the parking garages at Bridge Street.
Much like Trashy Dawg and Agave and Rye, the decor is loud and in your face. Weirdly, the inside of the shop smelled weird and kind of bad, like a weird mix between cigarettes and carpentry (a la the inside of a Lowe's). There are a few seating nooks and an upstairs area, though given the only food they serve is cupcakes, I kind of don't get the appeal of staying. I almost always get cupcakes to go. They do also serve bubble tea and alcohol. I liked the drink I had at Agave and Rye the one time I went so I wonder if these cocktails would be decent too.
I will say service was super lovely -- friendly, effervescent, helpful. I enjoyed my short chat with the employee and she provided good recommendations and answers to my questions.
First, the highlight. I was hot and tired and decided I'd get some bubble tea. I initially thought I'd try the standard brown sugar milk tea but on a whim I got the Peach Please, which is peach tea with peach popping boba and lychee syrup. I initially thought it'd be lychee jelly -- I've never had it in syrup form -- so that was a little disappointing. But I was impressed with the strength of the peach flavor and the drink was overall enjoyable and refreshing. I will grant it is VERY sweet, so if you're expecting a more subtle tea flavor this won't be it. However, I liked it.
For cupcakes, I got two: the Rich B, a play on the Dubai chocolate phenomenon (pistachio, chocolate, kataifi, gold flake) and the Nut Job (chocolate chip cookie dough, Nutella icing). I liked the Nut Job a good bit more, though I still only liked it enough to not be disappointed I tried it, if that makes sense. As in, I doubt I'd go back for one in the future. It seems like it should be a vanilla cake with chocolate chips to me, but it's actually a chocolate cake with a chocolate chip cookie baked inside. For once I didn't find the extra cookie addition a distraction or disservice and it incorporated fairly well into the cake. The cake itself was decently moist and flavorful. There was way too much icing and not enough cake, though the decorations were pretty. The icing didn't have much Nutella flavor and was mostly uniformly sweet.
The Rich B had similarly decent chocolate cake, and similarly way too much overly saccharine icing. The pistachio flavor was sort of artificial tasting, and I really didn't like the texture of the kataifi -- it was almost gritty.
All in all, I doubt I'd order cupcakes again (btw, two cupcakes and a bubble tea = more than $20) but I might stop back by for a tea if I was wandering the mall....
Read moreI wanted to try this place out as my husband had seen it opened on social media and it looked yummy! For reference, I got the Sugar Daddy cupcake (sorry, forgot to take a pic) which is a crème brûlée cheesecake cupcake with mascarpone icing, a chocolate candy piece, a dried strawberry, and a shard of crystallized sugar.
Pros: the vibes were cool, the staff was super friendly, you could tell they cupcakes were actually homemade and not box cake mix
Cons: It is very pricy for what you get ($7+tip for a 2 1/2” in diameter cupcake) and there was just as much frosting as their was cake which made it hard to eat (plus the icing all came out in one lump detached from the cake itself when I tried to remove the cupcake from the box). I thought it may have been filled with a cheesecake filling based on one bite, but there wasn’t enough filling for me to be certain. Also, the stand inside the box was too tall for the size of the cupcake so it was very difficult to remove from the box.
Overall, it’s not the worst little place. I probably won’t go back for a cupcake simply because I think there are other places where you can get a better bang for your buck, but I would be interested in going back to try their cocktail menu...
Read moreThe cupcakes were delicious. The coffee however was not good and my sister and I received the wrong coffee order though we were the only customers in the shop. We didn't mind getting the wrong order too much. It was the restroom which I found to be problematic. The tap is faulty to the extent it shoots out the tap and projects a water fall onto the floor and then is scolding hot. I waited for the staff to finish there conversation out the back to let them know the problem with the tap and that there is water all over the floor and I have tried to clean up as much as I could with paper towels, but it was very slippy still. I was told by the staff member that I lifted the tap too far (no sign to say this either in the bathroom). I also told them about the boiling water coming out the tap and I was told this was because they can have either scolding hot or cold and cold would fail there hygiene ratings. Again, there was no warning sign of the boiling water coming from the tap. She then went and sat down and it was clear that the water on the bathroom floor would be left for another customer to find. I would advise takeaway cupcakes only...
