This will be long, you've been warned.
It all goes back to 2018, when I failed College Calculus at FIU I drove all the way to Key West to get my favorite dessert, the Bannana Bazooka, it didn't disappoint. I stopped caring about having to retake Calculus. Yep, that's what this place does, but enough of that. Let's talk about this experience.
If you read reviews just know this place is a quaint little dark place that alludes to nothing inside, which is why almost everyone gets excited once they step in. My Squad, consisting of my grandmother, mother, and boyfriend where no exception. Frank Sinatra plays, the chandeliers light up the red, warm, almost private feeling restaurant, some may be reclined to say it reminds them of a French, or New York restaurant.
The event started like this: I made an error, I incorrectly put the wrong date to my reservation, but the hostess was kind enough to simply change it to the right date through opentable, I doubt this happens often, but we were the first ones available do double check. With that suspense diluted by the hostess and staff we sat down. The waiter was phenomenal and kind, the kind of "service" that everyone complains doesn't exist anymore (especially in Miami) does exist. He was patient with us, especially considering my family spoke Spanish. A little after the manager on duty, I believe his name was Robert, who spoke English and Spanish came to our table and was who any any restaurant owner should be proud to have working with them, he was exceptional. Beyond doubt, I had a great time, thank you to your staff.
The food: The Banana Bazooka: To me it's been the pinnacle of happiness. Few things compare to this. It's a dessert lover's dream, with options ranging from decadent cakes to melt-in-your-mouth cookies, and everything in between. The Kinky-er Key West Cream Pie: My grandmother was just genuinely happy, she said it was inconic dessert for key west, and that they did a phenomenal job. Cookie Nookie Pie, The one who wins the... cake. I was amazed to have a new favorite. I think any place that can make you reconsider your preferences, is special, especially if you double look and take a bite and can't decipher which dessert you like best. The Special that includes: Carress my Carrot and a bunch of things. My hands at this point are starting to hurt from writing the longest review I have ever posted, but my mom loved it because she got to try all of the desserts.
Thank you everyone, it was an...
Read moreAbsolutely loved it! I am laughing at some of these negative comments- clearly there is a misunderstanding here about what this place is and what it offers. First- if you are uncomfortable with all the sexual innuendo, uhm, refer back to the name of the establishment. If you want dessert for a party of 4-5 or more, read up on the experience here- it is a place for couples. It says it clearly on the door. Doesn't necessarily mean you can't come here with your sister or your bestie- it doesn't have to be a love interest, but it is an experience for 2. The desserts are reallllly good, so if you want something for your party of 5, order take-away. They do that.
If you want loud and rowdy, head further on down Duval, plenty of loud and rowdy to be had. This place was a MUCH needed quiet spot after a long day of walking and popping into different places for a bite and a pint.
The cutie pie at the door was dealing with frustrated people- not sure why everyone was so impatient. It is a small place, he was doing his best and he did so with a smile. Loved him whoever he was. Our server was wonderful. The seating was wonderful. It was quiet- it could have been quieter, but it was definitely subdued compared to Irish Kevins. The soft jazz, the dim lighting- all made for a cozy experience.
We did not order any alcohol, my fiance had chocolate milk and I had some delightful thing called goo goo. Carmel rimmed glass with ginger beer. SO delicious. They asked if we were celebrating an occasion and we were- my birthday. They brought my cheesecake out with a candle and happy birthday on the plate. My man had the key lime tiramisu. We had to take part of it to go because there was a LOT of it. The server even thought to include sporks so we could eat it later in the room where there was no cutlery!
It was a wonderful experience. Don't go here if you are looking to continue to revel. Be nice to the servers- they are doing a tough job. I found everyone to be quite wonderful!! I did find out there is one of these in Orlando. I have not heard that before, and I would be interested in checking it out! It's not possible that it is as good as this one.
This was a unique experience- it is on the list of things I WILL do again next time I visit Key West!!
Thanks for the great experience team at BTS Key West. From the host to the server to the runner.......
Read moreBetter Than Sex Dessert Restaurant in Key West is truly an experience like no other! From the moment we walked in, we were enveloped in an ambiance that was both sultry and sophisticated. The attention to detail in the artwork and lighting is extraordinary—every element is perfectly curated to create an intimate, romantic atmosphere. The privacy booths provide a cozy, secluded space that makes you feel like you’re in your own little world, while the music selection adds the perfect touch of mood-setting elegance.
We arrived at 10 pm on a Sunday, just an hour before closing, and despite the late hour, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. We asked to be put on a list, and they made it happen without hesitation. Our server, Alex, was exceptional—professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the menu. His recommendations were spot-on, and the desserts and drinks were out of this world. Each dish was a work of art, as delicious as it was beautiful.
Alex also shared the inspiring history of the owners, a dynamite husband-and-wife team whose passion and creativity brought this business to life. Hearing about their journey made our experience even more special, knowing the love and dedication behind every detail of the restaurant.
As for the menu—it’s spectacular, and I wouldn’t change a thing! I read a review that mentioned the cheesecake was too fluffy and should be dense. While I appreciate the diplomatic response from the owner, I have to say—if you want regular cheesecake, go to Cheesecake Factory. 😂 Better Than Sex is nothing like your ordinary anything.
Even as the clock ticked past closing time, the staff didn’t rush us out. We left at 11:21 pm, and they were nothing but gracious, making us feel welcomed and valued. Their kindness and professionalism turned what could have been a stressful late-night visit into a highlight of my first trip to Key West. Better Than Sex made my last night in the Keys a truly memorable experience, and I can’t say enough good things about this place.
It’s a 10 out of 10 for me—highly...
