A pasty is a baked pastry, a traditional variety of which is particularly associated with Cornwall and Devon, United Kingdom. It is made by placing an uncooked filling, typically meat and vegetables, on one half of a flat shortcrust pastry circle, folding the pastry in half to wrap the filling in a semicircle and crimping the curved edge to form a seal before baking. (Wikipedia)

If a pasty is still difficult to picture, think of a calzone but with a flakier, more delicate casing - with an incredible variety of fillings. For example: Bangers and Mash (House pork and sage sausage, grilled onion, mashed potato, with a side of red wine gravy); Chicken Tikka Masala (Marinated chicken breast, tikka masala sauce, green bell pepper and potato. Choice of minted-yogurt or tahini); Guinness Stew (Beef simmered in a Guinness gravy, with red potato, mushrooms, carrot, and celery. Layered with cheddar, sautéed leeks and cabbage. Served with sour cream and chive).

Our party of 15 stopped by at about 6pm this past First Friday - so parking was a nightmare. Obviously no fault of the restaurant; it's just the way things are on the south end of the Arts District. The place was hopping already - a great mix of young and old, hipster and business types, and locals and out of towners. The decor is nice and relaxed and doesn't feel like one of those places that tried too hard. When you walk in, there are tables to right, followed by large tables with bench seating (and large enough to accommodate our large party), and finally pool tables and restrooms all the way in the back.

The centerpiece though is the food prep/kitchen area where you can watch staff busily prepping/creating masses of pasties. Service was outstanding! Our group rolled in over the course of thirty minutes (because of the parking situation) but our server (I'll call him Blackbeard - because there's a Redbeard too) was over immediately every time someone joined our group. You know how ordering can be a disaster because there are people who are indecisive even when they said they were ready to order? This was our group - but Blackbeard was so patient with us. All the orders came out quickly/correctly and drink orders weren't forgotten about either.

If you're a First Fridayer, Cornish Pasty is right across the street so why not stop in for a bite and drinks? I'm definitely adding CP to my Arts...

I had this place on the list for some time and was really looking forward to it. We were seated at a 2 top that I feel was placed awkwardly against the wall. Our server seemed adequate at first. We received our drinks in a timely fashion and ordered a salmon pasty & bangers 'n' mash pasty with red potatoes & bread and butter. We were brought our bread right away but this is where things started to go bad. The butter was extremely cold and hard, especially for such soft cold bread. When I asked if they had softer butter the server took the butter away then came back with the same butter and another ramekin and said that's the best they had as she walked away. For the rest of the night she avoided our table as I even watched her have another server run our food to us. Trying to get a drink refill was difficult enough that I almost just went behind the bar and did it myself. With so much free time we were able to see and notice things like the people behind the food bar drinking drinks and not washing hands. Parts of the bar cluttered with employee personal belongings including a book stuffed with a stack of cash not being watched that could have easily been walked away with. Ice scoops sitting on top of dirty and dusty ice machines. Cluttered shelves complete with empty cleaning bottles behind the bar. And now for the bathrooms: the men's had paper towels all about the floor. The urinal had a large opaque trash bag half on/half off. The women's bathroom had one dirty toilet with the tank lid missing, one with toilet paper and dirty water floating almost to the top with an overflowing trash can, and one with an "out of order" sign taped to the door. The soap dispenser did not work so those women employees weren't washing their hands there before returning to work and handling everyone's food. We finally got our check after waiting, waiting, and waiting and the only time our server seemed pleasant was when she was seeing us out, all because we asked for softer butter. The thing is if they hadn't just left us there or been so rude to us, we wouldn't have had time to notice all the other issues.

Oh. The...

5 out of 5 hands down

I was so happy to have found Cornish pasty. I feel in love with pasty while in the UK. So when I found Cornish I made a beeline over. Amazing food doesn't do them justice. We ordered the Mushroom, Walnut, and Spinach soup to start. One of the best I have ever had. I find myself craving it even in the Vegas summer. It's thick and creamy and has depth of flavor and umami that you don't get with most soups. It's so velvety smooth makes you want bowl after bowl, but wait there's more.

We then had the scotch eggs. The silky egg is swaddled in a tender sausage meat layer and a perfectly crunchy crumb coating. Very hard to stop at just one.

Next up is the Ploughman's Plate. Now I am a huge fan of Cheese & Charcuterie boards so I was excited to try the ploughman's plate. The perfect plate with a selection of artisanal cheeses served with a selection of accompaniments. The Branston pickle one of the greatest condiments ever made. It's savory condiment that has a depth of flavor unlike anything most have tired. I am a huge fan. The cheeses were delightful, I can't recall the names of them all so I apologize for there omittance. Everything on this plate was to die for, again reminds me of my time in the UK.

And now the main event. The Pasties!! We ordered a couple and I will try to be short and sweet with them, The first one was the Guinness Stew. Oh where to start. The stout's slightly bitter and chocolate flavor when cooked with the meat and the other ingredients creates a rich and unique bold taste. Smooth and flavorful.

And the final item was shepherd's pie. This is my personal favorite. Its like a big warm hug.Filled with lots of veggies and tender ground beef,it's made with an unforgettably rich and flavorful sauce that brings everything together perfectly.

The menu really is the epitome of simple, homey comfort food, a nice big warm hug.

I gather up my doggie bag, and waddle out to my car, already fantasizing about...
