This is a very hard review for me. I am a huge supporter of small mom n pop restaurants, especially in small towns. But unfortunately, I have to agree with a lot of these bad reviews. My boyfriend and I have come to Long Beach a hand full if times so far and just love it here. We are always trying to eat at different restaurants to find the ones we like the best. Being the only actual Chinese restaurant in the area, I kind of had higher hopes. I tried to call in an order to go but was told "k, hold on" the phone was just put down on the counter I'm assuming and I waited for 10 minutes listening to them talk in the background. Tried calling a few more times, and it just went to voice-mail that was full. Went to the restaurant, still placing a to go order, was told the fried wonton in the pick 2/3/4 items list has no filling (just fyi). Only waited about 15 minutes for 3 mains and 2 rice dishes. Sweet n sour chicken, almond fried chicken, and general tso chicken were all the same fried pieces of chicken that were mostly the batter (literally close to 80+% batter) and the chicken was dry. Sauce smothered each dish, which made the breading very soggy and no longer had any kind of crunch from being fried. Wanted crispy fried Sesame chicken, but per the reviews said it didn't have a sauce, which didn't make sense, so we opted for almond fried chicken. The gravy was light colored instead of dark like we are used to, but it didn't taste too terrible. The sweet n sour sauce was pretty basic and actually quite bland. The same goes for the general tso sauce, slight flavor, but no spice what so ever. The house special fried rice has nice big prawns, bbq pork, and chicken that seemed almost like it was canned or maybe had been sitting in some kind of liquid. But not a marinade because it had no flavor on its own. I preferred the flavor of the house fried rice(minus the chicken) with soy sauce compared to the pork fried rice with soy sauce, but my boyfriend preferred the pork one. I happen to be allergic to coconut, so I was u able to enjoy my fortune cookie at the end of my meal. The lady who answered the phone was the same lady who seemed to be working the front counter as well as wait on the main seating area so I had to wait some time to even place the order, but otherwise seemed nice just spread to thin I think. The lady who brought out our food, I assume, was the owner or maybe the owners wife. She was very nice and accommodating. But overall, it was quite unsatisfying and bad enough that we both decided not to finish the food. We do not recommend it, and we will not be coming back. We are going actually to try to find some birds...

Read moreMy friends and I had come to Chen’s restaurant after being convinced by a good mutual friend of ours that the last time they had went there the food/takeout was amazing. Unfortunately this was 3 years ago. As of now, not just that same friend, but all 5 of us (myself included) can conclude that Chen’s Restaurant is a disgusting place to eat at. First, it took fifteen minutes for the server to ask what we wanted, not to even mention the fact that they did not serve us tea in a Chinese restaurant. After that, they had to explain to multiple of us that the food we had initially requested was not as normally prepared and that we’d be receiving multiple altered versions of the dishes we requested. This led to a few of us changing what we had initially ordered.
While this was already enough to drive our group bloody insane and skeptical, the quality of the food and service we had received was that of the equivalent to a McDonalds if McDonalds had chosen to bring your food right to you and not call your order number. I had ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken which had basically been the equivalent of boujee Chicken McNuggets with Sweet & Sour Sauce. To go along with this chicken I had also ordered the Pork Fried Rice which actually tasted slightly edible despite the occasional plastic taste mixed with Sweet & Sour Sauce (They put the chicken right next to the fried rice).
This is only just my experience, I am sure if the people I was with were to write reviews that they would also have these similar grievances as well. Though, to top this review off I will say this last statement; Chen’s Restaurant is a disgustingly expensive excuse of a restaurant, with their obviously frozen/reheated food that tasted as if it was already made 3 days before they gave it to you. (Despite that they will still take 30 minutes to even bring you the food for some reason.) It gave me and 3 other friends feelings of nausea and vomiting for about two and a half hours after. If you read this, please do not go there for I wouldn’t even wish eating at this place on my worst enemy because of how horrible the service is. Never listening to Jefferys food...
