If you’re a fan of Sichuan heat, listen up. I’m a big-time fan of petals of a Peony, and guess what? They’ve opened a little downtown outpost—perfect for a quick lunch fix. It’s a smaller version of the OG spot, and while I’m not sure if they do dinner hours, they’re definitely serving up lunchtime comfort.
I placed a pickup order through Uber Eats—Kung Pao Chicken with rice, plus a bowl of hot & sour soup (classic move). But here’s the tricky bit: parking. It’s right on Madison, so unless you snag a street spot, it’s a bit of a puzzle. Be ready to loop around a few times before you can even get to the front door.
Once I got in, my order was hot, fresh, and packed with care—exactly what you’d expect from Petals of a Peony. Flavor was on point, spicy in all the right ways. The menu at this downtown spot is smaller than their main locations, but I did notice they offer some bento box-style meals, which looked pretty solid. There’s a small seating area too if you want to dine in—some folks were...

But was so quickly let down with sub par food.. Petals of Peony is one of the best Chinese food places in the city, if not the absolute best. I was over the moon to see they were opening up a take out spot down town. I came on there second day of being open so im hoping they are still trying to figure it all out.
Regardless, I got the entrée meal and dumplings. service was fast, and very friendly, but the food was no where near what I would consider to be good. I would have preferred Panda Express over this meal really any day. The dumplings were soggy and the chicken and veggies just were not it.
Petals, I sincerely hope and wish that you guys poor some more soul and heart into this spot. if you dont, it will go down hill fast.
figure out how to replicate what you do at your full service restaurant here but smaller.

Read moreI walked in for takeaway since it was my first time going to Little Petals. First off, the place is really cute and the person who took my order was really nice and patient with me navigating the menu. I ordered the bento box with cumin beef, fried rice, and a pork egg roll with a side of spicy pork dumplings. The food was great. The beef was super flavorful and packed with cumin flavor/earthiness and the pork egg roll was crispy and delicious. I love that the fried rice isn't super salty and it works great as a pairing with my protein. The dumplings were hands down my favorite. Though not as spicy as I anticipated, they were tender, juicy, and also packed with flavor from the broth. My order took about 10-15 minutes to be ready from the point of ordering and it was packed with care. Would definitely come again to try more bento...
