First off, I would like to say that it is very exciting to see another buffet open up in the area. I usually would go to Tokyo Grill for a sushi buffet, so I was pretty excited to see what this place had to offer.

When I walked inside, it seemed like the place used to be a Golden Corral buffet location. The design was not really ideal for a typical Asian buffet or grill, but the design was quite uplifting. The bathrooms do look pretty nice, and the tables look like they were previously there, but it still blends in quite nicely.

First off, I am not a huge fan of the pay upfront before you dine in. It works pretty well for Golden Corral when they were popular back then, but I don’t think that the payment design works too well, let alone the tipping process. It definitely shows a bit in the service as far as I know.

Sushi was perhaps the area I was somewhat disappointed in. For starters, the sushi itself was actually pretty nice! The rolls were freshly made, and the rice and fillings were pretty soft and flavorful. Unfortunately, most of the time, the sushi serving trays were rather empty. On normal weekdays and non-peak hours, this would have been fine, but we came in for lunch on a Saturday. It does not make sense for only one chef doing all the sushi preparation while diners were going at it in the sushi bar. I was rather annoyed that there were no soy sauce dispensers at the tables, but only salt and pepper and napkins. You have to grab the soy sauce at the sushi bar instead. I think soy sauce dispensers for each table is a must if you want to promote sushi to your customers in the area.

The hibachi section was not too bad at all. The selection of ingredients was pretty decent, and it was pretty nice having a dedicated section just for hibachi, which was nice. However, my hibachi was WAY too salty. I think they either used too much soy sauce, or they used the regular soy sauce not realizing it was not reduced sodium sauce. Either way, it made me quite thirsty in general. Otherwise, the flavor and the spiciness was pretty nice.

As for the the Chinese-style buffet options, I think they should do away with some of those options. The buffet is trying to cater too much to your typical Chinese buffet favorites. The problem is that they are trying to do a tad bit too much with pleasing a wide array of customers rather than those who actually want some delicious hibachi and sushi. Keeping them minimal is key to promoting more hibachi and sushi options, which is what most people come here for in the first place! The hot and sour soup was pretty decent however.

Saving the best for last is the dessert section. The desserts were very nice! I loved their mango jello, which is not too terribly sweet for my tastes. The fresh oranges, honeydew melon slices, and grapes were always a welcome sight, and the tapioca pudding was not too bad at all. They actually have cheesecake as an option, which was fantastic! The cookies definitely have some strawberry creme flavor, and it definitely tasted like it was made on-site, which was a pleasant surprise from your typical store bought cookies. I got 2 plates of desserts for those reasons alone!

I cannot say much about the salad section, as I did not try their salad much.

Overall, Fuji Grill had a lot of potential! However, I believe that this buffet has a bit of an identity crisis. It seems like it’s more of a Chinese buffet with hibachi and sushi on the side rather than a hibachi and sushi buffet and grill with Chinese dishes on the side. It is really difficult to say what this grill does best or what it specializes in, because it feels like this buffet is simply trying to do too much instead of sticking to what it is supposed to promote: hibachi and sushi. Therefore, I think that expanding sushi and hibachi options is a must to help them promote more of what this buffet is best known for.

Overall, I would definitely give this buffet a try, but I think they need to make some changes right away to help them with finding their niche it they want to become a successful...

I stopped in during lunch time on a Tuesday. This place is huge. It is in an old Golden Coral building and they left the buffet untouched from the old restaurant, so it is massive for a Chinese buffet.

I think there was 4 or 5 types of soup. The Hot and Sour was very good. They had clam chowder... At a Chinese buffet, I did not try this soup so I can not report on its taste.

The center portion of the bar is a Hibachi. There is many items to choose. Almost every selection was fully stocked when I arrived. Those items that were out where restocked while I was there.

The old bread portion of the buffet is not a sushi bar. This was the only part of the buffet where each slot was not packed with food. There were tons of choices but only a few of each item set out. Seems like a good idea to keep sushi fresh. Unfortunately with the huge selection of item, I did not try any.

Food was just ok buffet food. Some items were not kept warm, some such as the stuffed shrimp were so old you could not cut through the breading with a fork.

The Salt and Pepper shrimp in the shell looked good but we're so over cooked you could not separate the shell from the tough shrimp.

The entire restaurant was very clean and the staff was cleaning constantly while I was there. I was impressed by the atmosphere. You can tell they take pride in keeping a clean restaurant.

At lunch time on a Tuesday the place was almost empty. I have assume this explains the state of the food selections. It is hard to have a fresh full buffet when their is no one there to eat the food.

Price was a couple dollars more than I expected for a buffet lunch.

If you want a place where you're not sitting on top of people and have time to sit and relax and eat, maybe read a book and have a large variety of Chinese food. This is a good place to visit. But don't expect menu quality food off their buffet.

I think I would probably go back but it's not a place that will be on the...

To whom it may concern: We have been to Fuji Grill Hibachi & Sushi Buffet on Kingsridge Road Dayton, Ohio several times and I have to say when we first started going the food and service was very good. Unfortunately the last few times we have went the food has been cold and hard and we have had to wait for sometime for everything to get refilled. The most recent trip was the worst, we met some friends there and they put the tip on my bill after I asked the lady not to do that, then she didn’t give me my bill so I had to ask for it and that is when I found out they had put the tip on my bill. The food was very slow coming out, the cooks would not put any crab legs out until the lady behind the cash register told them they could. I asked the lady about the crab legs and she kept saying they were not ready and there was several customers waiting for them. Then she finally went and got them out and as she sat them down she took the tongs and filled a huge plate for herself and she asked me how I like them. “She then preceded to tell me she likes them also and wanted to eat”. I really thought that was an injustice since she works there or even owns the place, but she should not have put herself in front of the customers that were waiting. After that fiasco they did not put anymore crablegs out. If they don’t want us to eat crablegs, they should take them off the menu. They are putting gratuity on your bill and not telling you and then the ladies do not even get you drinks. I am very displeased with the service, tipping, and just in general how the place is ran. It could be a really nice restaurant but something needs to be done about how it is being ran. Thanks for your time, hopefully the next time we try it things...

March 9th, 2024: My wife and I decided to return to Fuqi Grill, hoping for additions to their Hibachi bar. Unfortunately, nothing has changed except for additional noodles and a few other items. Still no tofu, garlic, ginger, or more vegetables. The sauces were typical and bland, lacking that wow factor. The mashed potatoes were terribly cold, and some other ingredients were dry. Surprisingly, the white rice wasn’t washed properly; the starch content seemed very high. My overall score remains the same. Additionally, I must mention that the French fries were very old, and the spring rolls were hard and cold. On a positive note, my wife enjoyed her crab legs, and I believe she had fish. Interestingly, non-traditional dishes like pizza and American food weren’t being consumed as much as others. I need to also add they did put out a lot of American seasonings but, Soy sauces and other condiments. Best part of Fuji is their salad bar and based on my wife’s review also, seafood and vegetables. In summary, if you’re just looking to satisfy your hunger, Fuji Grill might be a decent choice. However, for me, after two visits, there won’t be a third chance. Note: Most ‘ethnic’ Americans in my humble opinion only eaten Americanized Chinese food with manufactured sauces. They’ve never experienced traditional scratch kitchen Chinese restaurant. If you spent your entire life tasting corporation assembly line made products your five stars are understood.

Decided to check out Fuji grill today with my oldest. We love Tokyo Grill so wanted to see if it was comparable. It absolutely was NOT. It really was very standard, mediocre, buffet food. The sushi was really just okay. Mushy meats, the spicy mayo had sweetness to it that wasn't good, and there wasn't a large variety. It is very rare that I don't finish sushi, but I couldn't. The mussle on my plate was bland. No seasoning or lemon. It was like mushy water. I was happy for a salad bar, but the dressing options were very very limited and the ranch was the cheap kind that just isn't good. I tried peppersteak and it was so soft and fatty. Potsticker, cheese wonton, and spring rolls all very very meh. The kid tried all the Chinese takeout style dishes like honey chicken, chicken and broccoli, general tsao's. The quality and texture was poor. Some were mushy soft, and others were hard. They tapped their fork on a piece and it sounded like a rock. The fork didn't even pierce through. The desserts were probably the best part. We both liked the cake. My kid liked the chocolate chip cookie. The others were okay. I didn't take pictures of everything, but here's a few. It all looked way better than it tasted. We did not get hibachi today, that probably would be decent since it's made to order, and I'd go back just to eat the crab legs at dinner.
