Hidden Gem in Milwaukee: Authentic Taiwanese Salt & Pepper Chicken with Minced Pork Rice

A "hard no" for me. I have previously ordered from the restaurant. There were no complaints until most recent. During my recent visit, an item I inquired to the restaurant worker was not on the menu. The restaurant worker response was "No! No! We don't have that food item". Throws their hand in the air with frustration and heads to the back of the kitchen. Not cool, unprofessional, rude and overly dramatic. My response was "Ok, thank you" and I walked away to visit a different restaurant. He could have simply stated "Ma'am we don't have that menu item, here are some similar food items we offer". Why chase away business and potential income to keep the restaurant financially afloat? I do not understand the reasoning for the rude conduct.

The place was not what i expected. There’s a massive building housing multiple smaller restaurants, all of which looked delicious. Stopping here we saw the reviews for the bento place were solid and that the prices were extremely fair. Upon ordering the man up front was awesome, and they seemed super busy with tons of online or delivery orders for a smaller shop. We ordered a simple Beef and Broccoli bento with a strawberry fruit tea. The bento was cheap and filled to the brim with beef, onion and broccoli- along with rice and an egg roll. The portion was massive, and the fruit tea was very sweet and enjoyable (it also being 90 degrees out). I will definitely be walking here from class from now on.

I had a quick lunch at Bento Xpert on a weekday. I ordered through the Ritual app, so my food was ready when I arrived! The customer service was extremely friendly and welcoming. I was very happy with my lunch and would highly recommend checking Bento Xpert out! I would easily return.

Bento Xpert is in the Eleven25 at the Pabst, which includes three additional businesses as a little food court. The space was bright and clean, and if you’re eating lunch with others and can’t decide on one place, this would be a good selection. There is plenty of seating, both tables and counter seating so it’s comfortable with a group or on your own.

I chose the Orange Chicken, and I was not disappointed. The sauce was delicious and tangy, and the chicken was cooked perfectly. There was so much food! I was extremely full by the end and not able to finish it all – a good problem to have when the food is delicious! The rice was nicely cooked, and the eggroll was a tasty little bonus. The only downside was the vegetables, as I don’t really think they went well with the orange chicken (green beans, cabbage, broccoli, a pepper or two and a few zucchini and onions. It would have been great to see some big chunky red peppers and onions, snow peas instead of the beans, and maybe some carrots? The vegetables just seemed out of place, but they were okay).

There was an extensive menu to choose from, and plenty of drink options. The food all looked delicious and was well-priced. I would love to go back to try some of the...

Despite going keto, I still crave their five spices crispy chicken. Their bento box is very generous and well thought out - a lot of places will give you blah sides, but their sides in the bento are all fresh and delicious.

You can chose to get any of the main dish as a "side" rather than as part of bento. This used to be much more affordable, but on my last visit (6/2024), the bento was $12, and the side was $9. I wanted to skip the bento since I wanted to just cheat my keto diet with my favorite five spices chicken, but if you want a better deal, get the bento. Both their braised egg and egg rolls are yummy. I actually also really love their stir fried veggies.

My second favorite dish is their Beijing beef. It has been a while since I've been in and I see Korean chicken on their menu now, and I look forward to trying it out.

So far, I haven't had anything here that wasn't good (Ok, with the exception of their pork bun, which wasn't bad, but I didn't think it was as good as their other greater fare).

What I love more about Bento Xpert are the owners. Samuel and Lydia are both so friendly and make my visits pleasant. Thanks for bringing this authentic Taiwanese experience...

I've been here several times in the past and have raved about the HongShao pork (braised pork belly) because it is similar to a Vietnamese dish that I've loved ever since I was a young child, called thit nuong. I've only ordered things that were made to order and have enjoyed the dishes for the most part. However, I am a bit conflicted because of the most experience that my fiancé and I had. We came here last week since we were in the area running errands. We ordered off of the lunch buffet, which I've never done before and will definitely not do again. We each got several items to try, including the chow mein noodles, fried rice, crab rangoon, eggroll, 3 cup chicken, 5 spice chicken, massamum curry and the orange chicken. Honestly, nothing made me say, "Wow, this is really good." It tasted similar to items that you'd find at any mall Chinese fast food restaurant (although, yes, I know, not everything we ordered was Chinese American, but you get my point). It was the first time that I left here dissatisfied, but at least I know now that the next time I return, I'll go with my gut and stick with my usual...
