Khao Soi Chicken that’s on par with (or even better than) the one from Soothr, but much easier to get a resy.
While we’re lucky to have so many great Thai restaurants in NYC, Charoen Krung is one of the few I find myself coming back to. From appetizers to entrees, desserts to drinks, the quality of their thai dishes is consistently well above average.
They’ve got the perfect vibes, whether it’s a romantic date night or a girls’ night out. I celebrated my friend’s birthday here, and we had the best time.
*Sweet Corn Fritters $12 ** I loved aussie breakfast style corn fritters, but this is my first time having a thai style one. It was served with sweet chili sauce and crushed peanuts. These were some addictively tasty little bites to share.
*Summer Rolls $13 As the weather warms up, the summer rolls were perfect for a hot evening. Wrapped in rice paper, they were filled with shrimp, minced pork, and fresh veggies—complemented by a tangy green seafood dipping sauce.
*Khao Soi Chicken $22 * I loved khao soi and this one 100% satisfied my craving. It came with a giant, tender chicken drumstick. The curry stew was incredibly rich and flavorful, simmered with pickled cabbage and red onion. The combination of soft egg noodles and crispy deep-fried noodles created a complex contrast of textures that we really enjoyed.
*Ghang Phed Duck $32 ** Their lychee curry duck left such a memorable impression last time that I had to order it again. It was just as delicious as I remembered—the duck was incredibly tender with crispy golden skin, tossed in a rich curry sauce. The pineapples and lychees contributed a sweet and tangy taste to the red curry base with tropical sweetness. We devoured every last bit.
*Golden Puff $12 These golden pastries were stuffed with sweet potatoes and curry chicken. The vinegar-y cucumber dip enhanced the flavors. They were baked instead of deep-fried, which was my preferred style as the shell was less oily.
*Crispy Puffy Pork Belly $18 My first time having thai pork belly, and it reminded me of cantonese roasted pork (燒肉). We could clearly see the thick fatty layers wrapping around the meat. The pork skin was crackling with full crunch. On the side, the spicy garlic fish sauce reduced the greasiness, while the sweet soy sauce was slightly overpowering.
*Royal Pad Thai Hor Khai $28 Calling prawn lovers, their royal pad thai was generously layered up with jumbo prawns, regular shrimps and dried shrimps. Though the rice noodles were a bit clumpy, they were bursting with flavors and textures from crushed peanuts and dried shrimps, nicely wrapped in an egg nest.
*Mango Sticky Rice $15 Of course we got their seasonal mango sticky rice. We cleaned the plate even though we were super full. The sticky rice had a spot-on texture, drenched in coconut milk and topped with crunchy fried mung bean. Honestly one of the best mango sticky rice in town.
*Thai-style Ice Cream $16 A playful dessert with grass jelly, palm seeds and corn. Appreciate they housemade coconut ice cream for their desserts. The flavor was mild, more like a semi-coconut milk.
*Pai Lin (butterfly pea, yuzu, lime mocktail) *Herbal Jelly Thai Iced Tea I seldom rave about drink menu because I don’t drink, but their beverages hit all the mark. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a dinner spot with...
Read moreThe food was good. We were a party of 7 celebrating my niece's 30th bday. We were at the 2nd floor which we liked because we had more space. We decided not to go to our usual fave, Somtumder, and I regret it. This was closer to our home so we decided to go here. Everyone else was nice, except for our waitress. I already noticed that she had a different vibe to her but didn't make a big deal. Everything we ordered was good - puff pastry, chicken satay, tom yum soup, and spring rolls for appetizer. The Thai iced tea was also great. We ordered hung lay, 2 pork belly rice dishes, kra pow, shrimp pad thai, house special curry, duck, and the winter special fried rice - 8 main dishes. I wanted our waitress to know that her behavior ruined our night. My niece wanted a cookie cake from Insomnia. The hostess told us that they charge $3/person if they serve the cake. We all intended to order dessert but there was nothing in the menu that we wanted. We asked if they could serve hot coffee but they only had the Thai iced coffee. We began to eat the snickerdoodle cookie instead when the waitress came back visibly angry with a loud voice and told us "You know we have CCTV. We can see you. You can't eat that. We charge." I calmly explained that I knew that and we informed the hostess earlier that we had a cake. She angrily told me that I did not tell her. Note that no one tried to hide they were eating the cookie. We were taking photos. The cookie box about 8"x8" is on top of the table right in front of the waitress. My daughter, sitting directly where she was standing, was eating her cookie. She even had to angrily tell my niece "No outside food" to which she said sorry and that was the only time she closed the box. At first some thought she was angry because it was from another place, but we figured out that she thought we were trying to avoid the extra charge. Our bill was over $350! No one shared a plate. We even ordered 8 main dishes. The waitress implied that we tried to sneak it in. She could have told us "I need to charge you extra. I didn't know about the cake." But her first words were to tell us that they have CCTV and we got caught. I think it was shameful. I told her we obviously were not trying to hide it. She was so rude. I think she's the most senior there. The younger staff greeted us warmly when we arrived. She was the only one that was abrasive. That one waitress you assigned to us on Jan 4 at the second floor looked down on us. I also found her by the door as we were exiting chatting noisily with the younger staff talking about us. I stopped to tell her calmly that we did not intend to hide the cookie cake but she was so rude. She did not apologize. They did not charge us extra but she sure ruined a special occasion. I wanted to tell her to ring me for the check but we just wanted to get out of there after how she...
Read moreThis restaurant is amazing I came here with my daughter and it is so beautiful. The bar, decor everything is special and well put together. We sat at a half booth and it was comfortable and spacious although we did sit next to people. Our servers all worked together to ensure a pleasant experience and we loved it. They constantly checked up on us and gave good service. For drinks my daughter got the Go – Maine which is a mocktail that is beautifully presented with gold flakes. She loved the drink and it tasted good. I had the Sa-Nhea-Chan which is just like a pina colada it’s not overwhelming nice taste and smooth. Also beautifully presented I couldn’t get enough. Now for the food for appetizer we first had the Crispy pork belly which my daughter enjoyed and thought was good. It was her first time having it and I absolutely wanted her to give it a try. We also had the Sweetcorn fritters they were excellent, they came with two a chili sauce on the side and that added a little sweetness to it. Now for our entrees my daughter got the #3 hung lay ribs this is accompanied by white rice, the portion is an excellent size I mean great enough to share. The dish is spicy, very spicy the only thing is they are not able to adjust spice since the sauce is already on the ribs but we still decided to give it a try. She enjoyed it but couldn’t eat too much since it was spicy she did enjoy the pineapples that are also in the dish which does off set the spicy slightly. For myself I got the #10 Mango red snapper which is fillet and is amazingly presented with a mango salad. This dish is also accompanied by white rice I really did enjoy it I did feel like I needed more fish but since it was pulled off and made easier to eat I was ok with it. We also got the pineapple fried rice and added shrimp which was delicious and fresh also a good portion to share. For dessert we had the banana sticky rice we enjoyed the rice but didn’t really like the texture of the banana the coconut ice cream was delicious. We can’t wait...
