Visiting NYC with my husband and my parents and came here specifically for some gluten free food for my Mum, as it came recommended highly for coeliac safe food. The non gluten free food was brilliant, super tasty, great portions and not overly expensive. The gluten free food however was bland and lacked flavour. The food was cooked without soy sauce (as it contains gluten), which in many of the dishes is one of the main ingredients. This is disappointing as there is plenty of gluten free soy sauce on the market nowadays and it wouldn’t be difficult to replicate the normal flavour of the food with gluten free substitutes rather than just serving without soy sauce and therefor without flavour. Despite this my Mum was just very excited to be able to eat Chinese food at all so we were very grateful. When we first sat down to our table at about 9:10pm we were informed the kitchen would be closing at 10pm so to place our order fairly swiftly - not a problem. Order placed and food was served fast and piping hot. At around 9:40 we’re very much still mid-meal waitress came and gave us the bill. About 5 minutes later came back to collect the bill but we were still eating and potentially wanted a couple of extra drinks, they requested the bill was paid asap as the kitchen was closing? At about 9:50 the lights were turned off, and at 10pm on the dot we were asked to leave as the restaurant was now closed. 2 of us still had drinks and we’re still finishing off our food which was still hot. A very bizarre situation. Never in my life have I ever been unable to finish my food or drinks in a restaurant and had the staff turn the lights out on us. Having worked in hospitality for many years I was so shocked. Another few people were also still finishing up drinks and also commented on what strange behaviour of a restaurant it was. Of course they did warn us the kitchen was shutting at 10pm, but we took that to mean the kitchen would not be cooking any more food and would begin cleaning down….not the entire restaurant and bar and we would be unable to finish what we had paid for. Huge shame because the food was...
Read moreOur visit to Han Dynasty was a profound disappointment. If you're seeking authentic Sichuan cuisine, I would strongly advise looking elsewhere. This restaurant's offerings resembled Americanized Chinese takeout rather than the rich and flavorful dishes one would expect from a Sichuan establishment. Save your time and money for a better dining experience that truly captures the essence of Chinese cuisine.
The following is a summary of my experience: We recently visited Han Dynasty with high hopes of indulging in authentic Sichuan Chinese cuisine. Unfortunately, the experience was a major letdown from start to finish. From the lackluster flavors to the unmet promises, it was clear that this restaurant fell far short of expectations. I ordered the pickled vegetables, cold sesame noodles, salt and pepper shrimp(more like tempura than s&p shrimp) and double cooked pork belly. What arrived at my table was bland and uninspiring dishes that lacked the complexity and zing that authentic Sichuan cuisine is known for. To compound my disappointment, even the empress cocktail we ordered failed to deliver on its advertised promises. The absence of basil, a key ingredient according to the menu, was disheartening. It was a lackluster drink that paled in comparison to the enticing description and left me questioning the attention to detail and quality of the establishment. While the dining room boasted an appealing appearance, the lack of good air conditioning made the overall experience less than comfortable. It's clear that the restaurant prioritizes aesthetics over customer comfort, which is disheartening considering the...
Read moreGood food, terrible service........We were very excited when Han dynasty opened on the upper west side, finally bringing good and reasonably priced Chinese food to the area. We have dined at the restaurant a couple of times and ordered take out from there several times. Recently, the delivery service has deteriorated significantly. On at least the last 5 occasions we ordered from there, they have failed to fulfill a simple request - add a side of hot chili oil. As such, every time our order was delivered we would either have to forego an important component of our meal or call the restaurant and wait an additional 15 minutes for the issue to be rectified. Things came to a head last night when we included several requests and reminders within our order for said chili oil and it was again forgotten. I called the restaurant and spoke to a manager who apologized profusely and 15 minutes later we got several sides of chili oil. We then settled down to eat only to discover that the 2 sides of brown rice which we paid for were not included in our order. We do not eat white rice and we had to cook our own brown rice in order to complement the other dishes. I was livid at this time and my wife called back to the restaurant and spoke to the manager again who proceeded to offer a paltry refund of $2.18 for the brown rice that was missing. No further courtesies, 10% off your next order or something. Not even an offer to send over the brown rice! Customer service does not get much worse. Needless to say, we will not be ordering from there ever again. Time to head back...
