Typically, I order ahead for pick-up on my way to work, as I trust that my coffee will be made correctly. However, on this occasion, I noticed something was off with my coffee. I didnāt taste it right away, but after about an hour at work, I took a sip and immediately noticed that it tasted burnt and was not made properly. The coffee appeared much darker than usual, which led me to believe there was an error in preparation. I even asked a few of my coworkers for their opinion, and they confirmed that the coffee tasted off as well.
To address the issue, I took time out of my day to walk back to the shop and explain the situation. When I approached the counter, I politely informed the staff that the coffee tasted burnt and that I didnāt taste the usual vanilla flavor. Unfortunately, the response I received was less than professional. The barista who made my coffee became defensive, claiming that she did, in fact, add the vanilla, and continued to dismiss my concern, even mentioning that I frequently complain about the vanilla flavor. This was particularly frustrating as I hadnāt interacted with her for a week or two by now, and today was my first time seeing her in a while.
I was simply trying to resolve the issue and made sure to remain polite. However, the situation escalated when I was met with an attitude. I expressed that the coffee did not taste right and suggested that they taste it themselves to verify. While one of the other staff members offered a vague apology, the issue was still shifted back onto me, with an implication that I was being unreasonable.
I have always been respectful and understanding in my interactions with them, and I was disheartened by the defensive and dismissive attitude I encountered.
In the past, when Iāve mentioned that my coffee was missing the vanilla flavor, it was genuinely due to the absence of vanilla in the drink, often with just coffee and milk. In those instances, the staff has always been polite and apologetic, explaining that they were busy and may have simply forgotten, which I fully understand and never took issue with.
After some time, I found that maybe the sweetness level of my usual 4 shots of vanilla did not meet my preference. As a result, I began adding an extra shot of vanilla to achieve the desired sweetness in which it did improved my liking of the coffee.
However, during this visit, I was surprised to be accused of always complaining about the vanilla. I want to emphasize that when I raise a concern, itās based on a genuine issue with the coffee, not as a means of creating unnecessary problems. It felt as though my attempts to resolve the situation were dismissed, which was frustrating, especially since I have always made an effort to address such matters respectfully.
If it were a personal mistake on my part, I would have no hesitation in acknowledging it, as I value the rapport Iāve built with the staff at this shop and genuinely appreciate the service provided.
After this disheartening encounter, I will gladly take my...
