EXCELLENT.
I love Omakase, and am fortunate to have tried a few around the city at a similar price point. This one is definitely in my top 2.
Omakase means “chef’s choice”, so you will not be ordering anything from a menu. Everyone gets the same thing (except if you have allergies or an aversion to a particular fish). You’ll notice higher quality ingredients and the skill and creativity of the chef on full display. Plan on taking 2 hours.
The decor is elegant. The seats are comfortable and you get to watch your chef prepare each piece. The chef explains each piece while serving. The servers obviously have fine dining experience, and everything feels high end. Calming music adds to the ambiance, but at just the right volume that it blends into the background.
Wine list is very limited, but you’re not here for the wine. The Chablis paired nicely.
One thing I love about this Omakase is that in addition to the sushi, the prix fixe comes with an appetizer, an aged miso soup, and a dessert. It made the meal feel more complete.
The appetizer was a deliciously seasoned rice with uni, roe, wasabi, and fish served in a bowl. When you open it, fragrant smoke billows out. It was an impressive presentation and added to the experience.
For the main courses, every piece of sushi was more delicious than the one before it. I was in heaven. Home-made garnishes like Yuzu sauce and a spicy crunch, as well as truffle oil and other flavors added to the unique experience of individual pieces. The cuts were generous and I left feeling full. Many of the pieces were broiled with a blowtorch before serving, which I believe enhances the flavor.
This was my first time having aged miso soup. It’s much darker and very salty. A good palate cleanser after the sushi.
Dessert was a green tea mochi with crispy rice. I normally hate mochi. But this one? The added crunch brought back memories of eating crispy rice snacks as a child, and added a much needed texture and depth of flavor. This demonstrates the thoughtfulness of the chef that put this menu together. I loved it!
This place is amazing. Will be...
Read moreUpdate: I had pretty bad food poisoning after this I was disappointed by my experience here. To start, the service was generally great. The guy who served me was really attentive and talkative. The chef who served me was really sweet. But the food just was not it. The portions were really odd - you were given a pretty good amount of fish but with basically no rice? The quality of the fish was okay but not worth its price. The donburi was SO SMALL. It was insane to even call it that. Maybe i am being slightly spoilt after trying some other omakases on the city with a similar or lower price range but my expectations just weren’t met here. I was very impressed by the fact that i was served uni more than once, and that very deluxe ingredients were used. The price reflects the fact that you are served some uni, some truffle, some caviar and small amounts of wagyu. Not because the actual sushi is great. Maybe I’m speaking from bias, and I don’t value the deluxe ingredients as much as I do just really good sushi. Other people do, and I totally get that, it just wasn’t for me. The dessert was also just not anything special - just brown sugar ice cream on an edible mini bowl. The nicest nigiris I was given was whatever had yuzu zest on (it was a white fish), that was lovely; as well as the scallop with truffle. The meal wasn’t bad but i wouldn’t really recommend this to anyone. The restaurant took good care of me but there are better and cheaper omakases...
