Visiting NYC and happened to come across this sushi spot. I noticed they were offering free samples and checked the reviews. Truthfully I was surprised by the ratio and rating but found out for myself why they’d deserved them. The owner was so friendly and genuinely excited to have us try the samples. He takes pride in the quality ingredients and it didn’t disappoint! It was an amazing tasting experience and I ordered the chefs omakase box to go. Even some time later the sushi tasted amazing, didn’t have that watery texture heavily frozen fish have, a testament to the quality of the fish. Each bite was fresh and had a lovely flavor profile. The star was certainly the fresh uni on the wagyu sushi. It literally tasted like the ocean, hadn’t had uni like that, even at Nobu. Definitely coming back on my next trip!

Stumbled upon this spot while in the neighborhood and decided to give it a try. Oyishi Sushi did not disappoint! It's tucked away in a lower-level (couple of stairs below street level), super cute inside with a cozy vibe. You can order in person or through the QR code posted outside (seems like they prefer the QR for takeout orders). The staff were so sweet when we picked up our food, and service was quick. The sushi itself was some of the best I've had in a long time; the fish was fresh and high quality, and the rice was perfectly seasoned. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to.

The best takeout sushi I've ever had. Shown: maki box, chef's choice (nigiri & roll), a la carte chutoro and red snapper sushi As part of their opening, they offered a free piece of sushi to anyone walking by (see video). Encouraged, we ordered takeout and the quality was exceptional. The portions were more than fair for the price. They had run out of the aji and the chef explained to me that they replaced it with chutoro and uni with caviar as a courtesy. That was totally above and beyond any kind of service I expected. This will definitely become a regular place for us

Wow. We may have found our new favorite sushi spot.

In a post-partum sushi binge, my wife led me to this unassuming little place. Only 4 chairs inside and two chefs behind the counter. I started my order when the chef/owner suggested we do the 10-piece Omakase. I have food restrictions so the Omakase is never an option for me...but chef/owner was more than happy to accommodate my needs. Within a few minutes, a gorgeous plate of sushi, large cuts of fish, many adorned with gold foil. I was enjoying myself too much to take a photo. The best part, it tasted as good as it looked. Fresh buttery fish, really flavorful rice, perfect balance of flavors. Chef/owner also cut up and served us complimentary watermelon. Very personal experience, a memorable meal. We will...

We’ve lived on the UES our entire life and familiar with just about every place. From Tanoshi to Noz to Sushi by M. All the way down the totem pole to Sugarfish, Sashimi Express, and the local places.

This is really #1 in terms of price to quality ratio in the city. It’s a half step below some of the top Omakase experiences (RIP Brushstroke), but above Sugarfish.

Sushi by M is another favorite for $69 plus their $12 sake and ambiance at a sushi bar. But if you’re just looking for lunch or dinner takeout, this place offers a better deal for about the same quality.

So… for takeout and price/quality, Oyishi is #1. It’s our new go-to for weekly orders.

For a sit-down classic Omakase, aka date night, Sushi by M.

But no more Sugarfish delivery — this place just...
