My family has been buying coffee from Porto Rico for over 25 years. When we lived on Greene St. in Soho we used to wheel our daughter in her stroller to buy our coffee beans and when we left 22 years ago to live in Piemont we knew Porto Rico was going to be one of the most important places we would miss the most. Thanks to Peter's Birthday and Spring sales we always stock up with a big shipment. My husband's sister only gives us coffee gift certificates for holidays and birthdays. We love Porto Rico and always make a visit when we come into the city. We may have left Manhattan, but the city has never left us. We can't go back to our old home on Greene St. but at least we can feel at home at Peter's. The staff is always helpful and I love to hear our special blend (French Italian Espresso and Columbian Suppremo) being mixed "in the bean" into those wonderful old fashioned trays and poured into those Iconic brown coffer-beaned bedazzled bags. My daughter is 30 now and we know the tradition will continue. Peter's Great tradition, great service, and great coffee. What more could you ask for? Oh, I know, the best chocolate covered coffee beans ever! As you can see we love Peter's coffee and teas. And even when times are hard the coffee we drink will be mixed with at least more than 50% Porto Rico's fresher than fresh beans. Check out their stores and you will Not be disappointed. And thank you Peter for continuing the business your family started and know that small businesses that have a heart will...
Read moreI have been going to this coffee shop for over a decade, and it has always been lovely. Firstly, the aroma of the coffee and the coffee beans sourced from every place imaginable and truly roasted to perfection is simply unmatched. The magical ambience of this tiny shop, which is over 100 years old, with its bags of beans, cute little products, and usually very kind workers makes it a local gem! I once forgot the take a bag of coffee I had purchased, but the lady who sold it to me just kept it and I was able to pick it up the next day without an issue. Their brewed coffee is necessarily hit or miss, because they always change the flavours they serve (they always have three flavours: usually, a medium roast, though it varies, an organic roast (usually dark, I think), and a decaf), but that makes it a great opportunity to try before you buy! I really appreciate that they use high-quality almond and oat milks for their...
Read moreI'm torn because as much as I love this place I don't want it to get overrun by tourists. This shop is one of very few remaining old school Village institutions. Sack upon sack of full bean coffee from all over the world, open to be seen and smelled (but not touched, please). You order by the pound (or half or...) and they grind it right in front of you for whatever brewing method you use.
They always have at least one Brew of the Week on sale, but even the non-sale items are well priced (although some of the specialty imports certainly aren't cheap). Also a very large selection of decaf beans plus a tea section. You can even find various pots, presses, etc and filters too.
The employees add to local color and are friendly + knowledgeable.
Please don't drag a big group in here because it's a bit of close quarters with the actual sacks of coffee filling the place. And it would look terrible...
