The hippiest plant cafe in Williamsburg with its rustic design and retro atmosphere. Every nook and cranny of this cafe is filled with vintage furnishings and greenery. It is Japanese-owned and the three cheerful baristas I met are Japanese. PPL brewed brilliant matcha latte and didn’t let me down.
The menu has a variety of Japanese tea options like Genmai and Wakocha. For the tea lattes, I had a hard time deciding what to pick between Matcha, Hojicha and Sencha.
I personally like the matcha latte more because of its bright and robust flavor. The hojicha latte might be better than most of the ones you could get at other cafes in nyc, but the flavor could be stronger.
Both drinks had velvety and rich milk foam on top. They also won me over without sweetener. I was totally obsessed with the slight bitterness in their tea lattes.
Just a reminder that there is only a bench of seating. The cafe is really busy and the space could be quite cramped. There are a cute Japanese selection shop and a salon connected next door so you could also hit them up while you’re enjoying...
Read moreThe matcha is good but the service is bad. The two girls working the counter left me standing outside in the cold for about 20 minutes this morning. I waited by the window for about 5 minutes while they stood inside chatting to each other. Once I ordered I stood outside for another 15 minutes or so while I watched other customers walk into the shop after me and leave with coffee, food etc before another customer told me that my matcha had been sitting at the inside counter. I opened the door to pop my head inside and ask if they could bring the matcha to the window I ordered from as I didn’t want to bring my dog inside out of respect for the shop and other customers. At the same time, they had opened the other window to yell out the matcha and pretty much slammed the door in my face as I was apologizing for the confusion. I would recommend getting matcha from Kijitora East over on Graham. The matcha is always good and the customer service...
Read moreExcellent specialty coffee shop. I normally do pour overs at home, but I accidentally left my grinder at work over the weekend. This places drip coffee is exactly as good as the best pour overs I make for myself at home, which was a VERY welcome surprise. It was freshly brewed both times I went in.
I have only had their drip and milk drinks so it’s hard to comment on the espresso itself. But their cortados are fantastic with perfect milk foam and texture. The shop seems to be staffed by people enthusiastic about making great coffee as well - while I was waiting for the drip to finish on Monday, I overheard them chatting shop about dialing in a new espresso bean they started using, and watched as they tasted a few shots and critiqued them.
Aside from the coffee, it’s a small shop filled with plants and green tinted light. Not suitable for doing work but great...
