Read moreTL;DR: Flavorful comfort food with a lively atmosphere and friendly staff. Confused on how to order at first and place was a little messy but otherwise a delicious and memorable meal.
Quality of Food: The food was exceptional! The fried chicken was fresh, juicy, and seasoned perfectly. The mac and cheese had that golden baked topping that added both flavor and texture. The candied yams were divine! Sweet, spiced just right, and melt-in-your-mouth good. The cornbread stood out too, moist and flavorful, far from the dryness that often ruins it. Every dish was satisfying and worth coming back for.
Quality of Service: Ordering was initially a little confusing, but the staff guided us through it with patience and ease. Despite being close to closing time and working with a small crew, the employees kept a friendly and helpful attitude.
Environment & Ambiance: The restaurant had a fresh, modern vibe with great music that added to the lively atmosphere. While the space was a bit messy toward the end of the day, it felt more like the result of a busy shift rather than neglect.
Pricing and Concerns: The portion sizes were generous and made sharing easy, offering good value for the price. Solid $$ for two people.

Read moreCornbread in Newark is an absolute gem and hands-down the single best soul food restaurant I’ve experienced in at least the last ten years. I am NOT exaggerating! If you check my reviews you’ll see I’m from Ohio and have been looking everywhere for traditional and authentic soul food back home but unless I personally take hours to cook it, its nowhere to be found! Unfortunately it took me traveling all the way to New Jersey to finally find a venue with great southern soul food that reminded me of my childhood and hit the spot.
From the moment I walked in, the customer service was impeccable—the women were warm, kind, and helpful. It felt like I was speaking to my cousins or distant relatives lovingly offering to make me a plate. 😊
Now, let’s talk about the food—because wow. Everything came out piping hot and steaming, which already told me what to expect next. The fried chicken was fresh, crispy, and well seasoned with the perfect crunch. The greens were yummy and clearly made with love — definitely not from a can like many soul food restaurants serve to take shortcuts. The Mac was sooooo good and was traditional, southern BAKED Mac— not the upgraded shells and cheese mess with a sprinkle of parsley many soul food restaurants serve these days. I enjoyed my food soooo soo much and will be sure to return anytime I’m back in the area.
I genuinely hope Cornbread continues to grow and expand—please bring this magic to the Midwest! We need this place back home...
