I’ve always loved Zao for the food—it’s fast, healthy, convenient, and delicious. But if I’m being honest, the service has rarely been worth writing home about. That’s why last night completely took me by surprise—the service was absolutely incredible.
And you know what? It was a group of teens running the show.
So often, young workers get labeled with the “Gen Z stare—I’m just here for a paycheck” vibe, but this crew was the opposite. The restaurant was clean, organized, and they were clearly on top of keeping it that way. Most importantly, they were polite, respectful, and genuinely caring.
John and Jacky especially stood out. I’m 35 weeks pregnant and waddling around like a penguin, and John offered to carry my hot soup to my table so I wouldn’t spill. Jacky kindly topped off my broth when I mentioned I was sharing it with my son. Those may seem like small things, but in a world where kindness feels increasingly rare, they made a huge impact on me.
This experience honestly restored my faith in humanity and in the upcoming generation. These kids went above and beyond when they didn’t have to—and that makes all the difference. I hope the whole crew gets the recognition they deserve, because they are making Zao look really...

Everyone already knows that they are essentially the Asian Chipotle (but they actually let you customize your order…)! They have so many different options when it comes to how you want your plate put together. You can get a salad, a rice bowl, noodle bowl, veggie bowl, wrap, tacos & soup! You really can’t go wrong with anything you get from here - everything is so fresh and you can taste the difference!
I always go with a bowl with half rice & half yakisoba noodles, steak, all the veggies (I miss the potato veggie option - it really made the bowl extra filling and delicious) and the Zao way for the garnish toppings. If I’m eating in the restaurant I will get the tiger sauce (which is the teriyaki sauce, chili paste & aioli mixed) but if I’m taking it home I will put on my Yum Yum sauce (which is essentially Asian fry sauce).

Read moreUpdated I hate to make an update but I have been back to Zao’s several times since this and the customer service is still great, but they keep giving less and less meat in the bowls with each visit. This time, I feel like I paid for just rice and a few pieces of steak. I understand there are rules or guidelines for serving, but the ratios just don’t make sense anymore. I was pretty disappointed. I don’t think I’ll be back for a while. . I love Zao’s! I’ve eaten there so many times but most recently I got my order and took it home to eat. With past orders, I didn’t notice the amount onion and I’m typically more sensitive to onion as it gives me headaches. These order was especially strong in the onion, so I called Zao’s and asked if I could come get a new order without the broccoli and onion. They were SUPER accommodating and more than willing to let me come in and get something new. I really appreciated the kindness and...
