We went to see the Philly opera and decided to hit up Estia for dinner. This was our first time in the Greek restaurant and it came recommended by our fellow opera attendees.
Although we were seated quickly, I can't say this is a place I would visit again.
Presentation wise, this place has a lovely mediterranean vibe and classy decor. You definitely get a slice of greek inside the restaurant.
But when it came to the food itself? I can't say I was bowled over or that it was worth the price. Everything was... ok.
We ordered the spread pikilia for appetizers with tzatziki, htipiti, and potato skordalia.
Was it bad? No, nothing was bad.
Was it worth 18 dollars? Absolutely not. I have had better hummus from other locations in Jersey and Pennsy.
My wife and I are no strangers to spending big on special nights out. However, there is a catch. We don't drink.
As a result, when my wife ordered cold tea, it was quite possibly the worst tasting tea I've ever had. I don't know why it tasted so awful but it shouldn't be offered when it practically tastes salty.
My wife got the roasted chicken and although the flavor was good, the meat was dry and lacked moisture. It also didn't taste any different than if it had been cooked at home with some adobo seasoning.
I got the lamb shank, and it was definitely an excellent tasting lamb compared to other's I've tried in Philly and other locations. Although there is not much food put on the plate, it felt like a decent portion. (If you skipped appetizers, you would probably still be hungry.)
I think to fully enjoy Estia, you should be a drinker and into seafood. In regards to the greek food we were familiar with, it wasn't anything to write home about. My guess is that the seafood is probably excellent and the menu revolves around drinks and having the full course.
We won't know because it unfortunately wasn't to our liking. The place clearly has a well-deserved customer base but we don't fit the demographic.
It is definitely worth checking out if you love Greek food. But for casuals like us,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy boyfriend and I ate at Estia on a Saturday night before a show. When we were booking out reservation online, the only options available were outdoor seating. We assumed that would entail a nicely heated Veranda or greenhouse like most other outdoor establishments have now. Instead, we were seated inside of a booth directly on the sidewalk, inside some sort of Veranda which was NOT centrally heated. Each table had an individual heat lamp above it. Our outdoor table was the one closest to the door, so we felt every gust of wind that went by, and it was a cold and windy evening. To top it off, the heat lamp at our particular table was defective (we discovered this when the couple next to us left and we walked over to see how well heated their seating area was, and were surprised to feel how much more nicely heated their table was). To top it off, there was a windowsill flowerbed right next to our table that had dirt in it but NO FLOWERS. It was extremely unpleasant having dirt fly into our food and water throughout the night while shivering in the cold and wind with our coats on. We asked a few times if we could be reseated since our arrangement was so unpleasant, and we were told that this wasn't possible. We also asked if the veranda door could be shut while waiters weren't walking in and out so that the wind would be blocked, and we were also told no.
The food on the other hand was excellent though, if my review was based in food alone, I would have given five stars. The staff was also sensitive to the fact that we had a show to go to, so food appeared reasonably quickly. We couldn't really enjoy it, however, given how cold we were, the constant wind, and the fact that dirt kept flying into the food. Sadly, given the experience we had with the seating arrangement, we will not...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI strongly recommend folks not give this establishment their business. Our entire family attended a 90th birthday party there. Towards the end of the party, the legs of one of the tables folded and the table partially fell on two elderly attendees, both 84-years old, spilling hot coffee on both of them. The Manager on duty, Colleen, gave the couple her card and told them to send her their dry cleaning bill as their clothes were covered with hot coffee. When they did so, she refused to pay it, fought it and forced them to hire a lawyer to get their dry cleaning bill paid. This couple chose, due to their age, to have their dry cleaning picked up and dropped off, increasing the price. Colleen was wildly unprofessional throughout the entire process, proposing to pay a small portion of the dry cleaning bill which was from a legitimate, experienced, professional dry cleaning establishment. The couple's lawyer spent weeks simply trying to get their dry cleaning bill paid. It was only $224.00. It ended up going to insurance (if you can believe that) and was finally resolved, favorably.
Either this restaurant: 1) has faulty tables and chairs that are old and break down without warning; or 2) this restaurant doesn't properly train its staff on how to set up a table. In either event, it's quite the poor showing and the amount of effort Colleen Forced these elderly adults to go through simply to get their clothing dry cleaning bill paid boggles the mind. Do not give them your business. They do not deserve it and treat elderly clientele Very poorly. Colleen should be...
