Alice is a combination of three distinct areas: takeout counter, sit-down service, and the bar. The takeout area offers a wide variety of pizzas, gelato, pastries, and coffee. The pizza is available by weight, so you can mix and match different flavors to sample an array of options or satisfy a group of picky eaters. The pizza itself is a joy to eat: perfectly walking the line of the crispness of thin crust and the chewiness of a thicker crust. There are generous toppings and a balanced use of herbs and spices. Truly delicious pizza that would satisfy for a meal or just a snack while walking the city.
The bar has a happy hour from 3-6 that offers $3 Peroni draft, $6 city wides, $6 wine, and $7 cocktails. There are multiple small plates available, including a sampler of their pizzas for less than $5! This happy hour is generous in their offerings and very well-priced.
The bar itself is a thick beam of light wood backed by a stone runner. The seating allows a global view of the restaurant: the Italian espresso maker, the rows of hanging wine glasses, a wall sized picture of the Trevi Fountain, and the well-selected light fixtures. It’s a warm, inviting space, and you feel transported away from the congestion of 15th and Locust when you sit down at the bar’s cushioned seats. There is not a lot of standing area between the bar and the sit-down area, so I wouldn’t go with more than 3 or 4 people unless you are planning to get a table.
I have come back multiple times for happy hour, but I have not patronized the sit-down restaurant area adjacent to the bar. From what I have seen of the dishes walking by, the pastas look tasty and appear to have generous servings. The full menu is also available at the bar.
The staff is very friendly and happy to chat with you. They recognize you if you have been there before, and their warm welcome adds to the feeling of being transported to an Italian shop on the streets of Florence. The service is quick at the takeout area and the sit-down service, but this contrasts with the bar area where I have found it difficult to get our server’s attention or they do not check in on us. This is the only area that I feel could be improved, otherwise it would be a 5 star review.
Overall, Alice provides a genuinely enjoyable experience, excelling in all of its flavors as pizza shop,...
Read moreLast Friday, I went to this place with two other people because it had been highly recommended for having an Aperol and some snacks. However, the experience was extremely unpleasant from the start. When we arrived, the waitress was not friendly at all, although that turned out to be the least of our problems.
At one point, I saw something move in the distance. I thought it might be a cockroach or a mouse, but since we were seated far from the kitchen, I convinced myself I might have imagined it. A few minutes later, one of my companions clearly saw a mouse under the table next to ours. Both of us saw it and screamed, but we stayed calm, and I immediately informed the waitress.
Her response was simply to bring me a box to pack what was left of our pizza and say, "I'm sorry." Then, she and other staff members began laughing and looking at us, as if we had made the whole thing up.
As we were getting ready to leave, another of my companions saw another mouse on the backrest of one of the sofas, right where my friend had been sitting. The three of us screamed, and all the staff did was bring us the check.
Of course, I didn’t leave a tip, and honestly, I shouldn’t have even paid. But I was so disgusted that all I wanted was to get out of that filthy place as quickly as possible.
It’s unbelievable that this was the staff’s reaction to such a serious issue. A mouse almost ended up on the plate we were eating from. If this is happening in the dining area, I can't imagine what the kitchen must be like. There’s clearly a serious rodent and public health problem, which is completely unacceptable in a restaurant. On top of that, the way the staff treated us was totally inappropriate.
I absolutely DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. It was a disgusting and very uncomfortable...
Read moreI actually would give NO Stars. Service at Alice Pizza is the WORSE! I came in to purchase pizza. The person behind the counter charged me 75 cents for pizza that cost $5.00, so I corrected her and the response she gave me was more out of the fact that I corrected her... "How dare I correct her" ??? I was totally confused, so instead of her THANKING ME for telling the true, she felt insulted that I corrected her. My mind was like I know I can't walk away, only paying 75 cents for my pizza when I know it cost $5.00. Anyhow, she refused to refund my 75 cents and then she wanted to charge me the $5.00. I requested that they refund all my money and they refused, so I demanded to see the manager who refunded my $5.00, but not my 75 cents... I walked away with no pizza minus my 75 cents...This was not my first incident at Alice.
A few months prior to the incident above, during a separate incident, I was waiting in line to be served. The woman behind the counter, looked straight at me, but then completely looked over me as I stood in front of the counter and face to face with her...she then attempted to serve the person who was standing directly behind me. I interrupted and asked... DO YOU NOT SEE ME STANDING HERE!!! She then apologizes and attempts to take my order, but by then I was totally annoyed so I left. I never went back to Alice until my most recent incident... my thought was to give them another chance... but I will not EVER return to Alice Pizza. They are the most blatantly racist restaurant I have ever been in!!! WARNING...People of color, do not patronize...
