Ann Arbor. Not exactly the back alleys of Tokyo, is it? More like a pleasant, tree-lined intellectual sanctuary where the wildest thing you’re likely to encounter is a heated debate on postmodernism. So, when the assignment landed – a Japanese joint called Yotsuba, tucked away on Hogback Road, a name that promises neither exoticism nor culinary epiphany – I braced myself. You always do, when the promise of "authentic" anything surfaces in the American heartland. Usually, it's a polite, well-meaning disaster. But then, you walk in. The air, thankfully, doesn't reek of old fish and desperation, which is always a promising start. There's a certain hushed, almost reverent dignity to the place, a few minimalist wooden screens, the low murmur of conversation that tells you people aren't here to scream into their iPhones. They're here to eat. A subtle, almost imperceptible hum from the kitchen, the delicate clink of ceramic on wood – sounds that hint at purpose, at a measured, practiced approach. They even had these little recessed booths where you shed your shoes, a minor ritual that, for a fleeting moment, almost convinced me I hadn't just driven past a TGI Fridays. My first move, predictably, was to deliberately swerve off the path of righteous sushi. Fried oysters. Yeah, I know. At a Japanese place. A culinary sin, perhaps, a deliberate act of provocation against the purists, but I've always been drawn to the dark corners, the unheralded pleasures. And goddamn if they weren’t precisely what the doctor ordered. Crispy, golden-brown little bastards, not a hint of that rubbery, industrial chew you find in the frozen variety. These things sang of the sea, salty and sweet, their delicate bellies bursting with just enough briny juice to remind you that even here, in the land of maize and Wolverines, a visceral connection to the ocean was possible. A damn fine, unexpectedly triumphant way to kick off what I fully expected to be a thoroughly average evening. Then, the main event: the spicy tuna roll. My usual M.O. for a new sushi joint. It's the litmus test, the baseline for competency. And it was… good. No, really good. The rice, often the anonymous, bland victim in lesser establishments, was warm, perfectly seasoned, each grain distinct yet cohesive. It clung to the impeccably sliced tuna like a long-lost lover, not a desperate stalker. And the tuna itself? A surprising, deep ruby red, firm but yielding, with a clean, almost sweet flavor that spoke of respectful handling, of fish that hadn't seen too many miles. The "spicy" wasn’t some afterthought squirt of bottled misery; it was integrated, a subtle, slow burn that blossomed on the tongue, leaving you wanting another hit, not gasping for water. It wasn't Jiro's dream, no, but it was honest, unpretentious, and deeply satisfying. The staff moved with a quiet, almost ghostly efficiency, a welcome absence of forced cheerfulness or intrusive hovering. They brought the food, they cleared the plates, and they let you be. No unnecessary chatter, no pretense. Just the transaction of good food for money, a simple covenant honored. So, Yotsuba. It’s not a pilgrimage site, not the kind of place you’ll tell your grandkids about with misty eyes while recounting your global exploits. But it’s real. It delivers, against all odds and expectations. And sometimes, in a world full of cynical disappointments and culinary con jobs, that’s more than enough. It's the kind of place that reminds you that even in the most unexpected corners, a decent meal, honestly prepared, is a quiet, powerful act of defiance against the mediocre. And for that, Yotsuba, I grudgingly, but...

Edit...even better. This place is wonderful. People who give lousy service reviews IMHO, are the sort that find things half empty anyway. Food, service and final bill are always great, as is evident by the parking lot. Everyone here is more than helpful and pleasant if you are. Been here as often as I can, and have NEVER had a bad experience
Here again. The lady that runs the place came over and chatted with me. She made my worst day in the past 3 years not only tolerable, but she made me feel at home, and I left feeling like I had just sat down with family. Love this place. Great sushi nice atmosphere.. and air conditioning! Wink.
12/08/17: i am not sure about other reviewers, but if you are finding this place non attentive to details, it may be in your approach or perspective. The waiter asked how my food was. I gave honest review, answered the question. Note that i didn't ask for a do over, ate my entire order, just made comment that the tempura was soggy vs crispy....wholy cow...everyone down to the owner came to see what was up. I love this place, the food is great considering how far we are from an ocean, and the service is usually beyond reproach. The attention to both customer satisfaction and quality of service is beyond phenomenal! I still highly recommend and will continue to come here. I can't give 5 stars, only because I have had sushi in the pacific islands and on the west coast and well, fresh fish is fresh not shipped on ice, right? If you like sushi, are there for the food and not a gimmick or a show, go to Yotsuba. They will not dissapoint! Arigatou! 8/17/19 Always so good. I wish that I could purchase uncooked hamachi kama to cook on the grill. Not so, but delish here. Some day will find a place like sushi kuni in GR where they will actually sell me kama to take home. This place is good. Consistent. Definitely recommend if you want sushi. Michigan is not the "coast". But yotsuba does a great job. Good fish, good people.
7/23/21 They are so good! I can't recommend this place enough! Great food, great service. Arigatōgozaimashita
9/04/22 The fried oysters are phenomenal. If you like oysters, try these. They will not disappoint. The spring rolls....not what you think....so much better. I cannot even begin to describe the pleasant surprise! One day i will remember to take pictures before diving in. As you surmise, i have become a regular. This has it's perks. I have had the honored opportunity to acquaint myself with the wonerful people who work here, and they with me. It is wonderful to come back and leave my dining in their capable and friendly hands. They have taught me much about the food and the particular culture at this space. 5 out of 5...makes it 10. Thank you!
08/29/24 Gone way down hill since my last visit. Will be looking for a new sushi place. Pls reply with...
Read moreVisited Saturday afternoon, 8/30/2022. I have visited Yotsuba with my family about once a year since the early 2000s (daughter went to Eastern) and have usually been impressed with their menu. Unfortunately it seems that the quality of the food preparation and service has gradually gone down to the point where it is no longer worth the price.
We arrived around 2:00 and both ordered the deluxe bento box menu for $30/person. There were probably 4-5 tables full when we arrived and the waitstaff was mostly standing around talking and laughing behind the counter in Chinese. Our server was a woman who quickly sat us down and provided menus and water. She came back and took our orders for the deluxe bento lunch boxes. The food was served very quickly, looked great, and overall ingredients seemed to be correct (I am very familiar with Japanese food) but seemed to have been prepared hours ago and was not what I would expect if I was paying $30/per person.
Good side: The sushi was very good as were the pickles. Not so good: The miso soup was cool and weak, not hot or tasty, the ginger dressing salad was limp, not tasty, and soggy, the grilled salmon was cool and rubbery, and the shrimp tempura was very hot, but wet on one side and rubbery on the top (microwaved).
Both my wife and I were very surprised as we had had good meals in the past, and we tried to get the attention of the waitstaff, but after serving the meal she retreated to the kitchen area and we didn't see her for another half hour. We heard her laughing loudly in the back, but no one came back to check on us.
We ate our meals because we were hungry and eventually she came back, quickly took our boxes and came back with a check. Not much I could say or do at that point so we paid the bill and left.
I feel that the ingredients were all excellent, but probably prepared for the lunch rush around noon. We came in at 2:00 when things had slowed down. However for the price paid, I would still expect a freshly prepared meal and more customer consideration. at least check back with us once or twice after receiving our food. Sadly...
