March 2024: We had brunch at Cafe 222 on a Saturday around 8 am. There wasn't a line so we got seated quickly at a table outside. I ordered the blueberry cornbread waffle and added eggs and sausage links for $7.50. The waffle was delicious. You can taste the cornbread flavor and there were fresh blueberries in the waffle. I thoroughly enjoyed my food this visit as well. I definitely recommend this place for breakfast. June 2023: We had brunch at Cafe 222 at around 10:45 AM on a Tuesday. It was easy to find free parking but I expect that won't be the case on the weekend. The restaurant was not crowded so we were seated immediately. There is both indoor and dog friendly outdoor seating, but most of the outdoor seating isn't fully covered. It was drizzling when we arrived and we had our dog with us. The host was very kind and seated us just past the host stand in a fully covered outdoor area. He even brought a bowl of water and a few treats for our dog. We ordered the peanut butter and banana stuffed french toast and chili and cornbread waffle. We loved everything we ate! Peanut butter and banana lovers will really enjoy the french toast. You get three big pieces of french toast that are jammed packed with creamy peanut butter and ripe, soft bananas. The bread looks like simple sliced wheat bread but it's perfect as french toast. The chili and cornbread waffle was also excellent - a great savory option. The waffle was very soft and tender and it has a good corn flavor. The waffle was covered generously with chili and cheese and a dallop of sour cream. I would highly recommend Cafe 222 for brunch. The food was excellent and the service was friendly and fast. Plus, the outdoor seating area is dog friendly.

I have walked my dogs past this cute cafe more times than I can count and we finally made it over for breakfast this morning. So happy we did - wish we had done it sooner. It’s a small cafe with (as I counted) 7 tables and six counter seats inside and another 7 tables outside. We were fortunate there was no wait for a table inside. Atmosphere feels a bit crowded because you are right on top of the next table over but that’s more a space issue and trying to fit more tables in than anything else. If you don’t like others hearing your conversation this isn’t the place for you. That being said the service was fantastic and the food was scrumptious. We had the Biscuits and Gravy and it was probably the best I’ve had in San Diego. Tastefully peppery and plenty of gravy for the dish. It also comes with potatoes covered in gravy which I’ve never really experienced before but were good. I might ask them to skip the potatoes and give another biscuit or two next time as the potatoes seemed heavier than the fluffy biscuits. We also ordered the Breakfast Burrito covered in “Mexican Sauce” (read red Enchilada Sauce) and served with retried beans. My partner loved this dish and I had a taste and concurred it was tasty. It has green chiles inside which are mild. My partner is super picky about anything claiming to be Mexican so the fact it was a positive review on that is saying something. Couple other menu items we are interested in trying next time are the Waffle with Fresh Strawberries and the Stuffed Banana Peanut Butter French Toast. We saw both dishes coming out to other tables and they looked delicious.

My FIVE STARS goes out to the ONLY SERVER THEY HAD ON DUTY TODAY. He was the older gentleman with the glasses. He was so polite and sweet, and although we didn't really get a conversation with him at all really.... that was due to him having to hustle and be slammed while the OWNERS SPECIFICALLY THE LADY IN BLACK JUST WATCHED IN THE CORNER. Now the other guy, also seemed like he was the owner.... was nice enough to sit us and help a bit. But really??? You do nothing??? And I get that the place is tiny.... but one server is an A-hole move to do to a person unless they want to take all the tips. And even if that's the case and you support that... at least run some damn food! Don't just leave your guest watching it sit on a counter while you stand there and try to look pretty. And next time how about you get off your phone and tell us you will be right with us instead of using your index finger to let us know you will be right with us. Honestly it would have been less rude if you just walked past us and didn't acknowledge us all together. But hey I never worked or managed a restaurant ( wink* wink*) I'm giving the food 3 stars: my waffle was very tasty. The biscuits and gravy on the other hand..... THEY USED A PORK GRAVY which was not stated on the menu, or my husband wouldn't have chose it. He expected a traditional gravy. So it tasted weird with an after taste. I know because I tried it. It was MEH. You know most placed don't even put meat in the gravy to give that vegetarian option. Just throwing that out there. Atmosphere: was cute. Has potential to be better.
