My husband and I had heard really good things about this place, but unfortunately we had left town by the time they were reopened from COVID.
During one of our recent trips back to Cali we were randomly in the area as they were opening and knew it was fate that we must try them!
Boy oh Boy we are so glad that we did! At their downtown San Diego location they have over 70 different flavors available that they make in house!!
All of their ice creams are egg free and they even have dairy free options. One cool thing we found out was that the milk they use has a 7 day or less cow to machine time!! That means they use the freshest milk around!! They even use pecans from a local farm and are made fresh just for them! You can tell the owner “scoop dog” takes pride in quality and customer service.
As we were there ordering a “regular” walked in and was inquiring about a custom ice cream flavor she wanted to have created for her husband who would be coming home from the military and she wanted to surprise him with it. The owner said he’d come up with a special batch just for him! How cool is that?
Because there was so many flavors they have the option to do flights of ice cream... so of course we had to do two flights and a regular scoop.
The flavors we got were as follows: Bourbon pecan Give me samoa Pistachio Red sky Kahlua espresso Graham central station Key lime Elvis Peanut butter salted fudge
First off a regular scoop of ice cream is legit massive!! Probably the same size as a double scoop somewhere! Second…all of his names legit taste as described. The ice creams were all super creamy and had their own unique flavors for each.
Our favorite hands down was the graham central station. It is legit life changing. Its a graham cracker flavored ice cream which is absolutely heavenly and taste like you’re eating honey graham crackers. Theres even a little crunchy grit from the graham crackers, delicious crunchy honey comb pieces for more honey flavor and bits of chocolate. When you go this is a mandatory flavor that you must get!!
We will definitely have to go back to try more flavors. Take your family or just take yourself and get a flight of ice cream so you can...
Read moreCali Cream was good, typical ice cream. There really wasn’t anything that jumped out at me as truly outstanding. They have a ton of flavors, and of the 4 we ordered only the Graham Central Station (a graham cracker and honeycomb ice cream) really impressed. We liked it, but we wouldn’t go out of our way to get it again.
Order: Four Scoop Flight (Kahlua Espresso Chip, PB Salted Fudge, Graham Central Station, Blueberry Cheesecake) Price: $7
Review: My wife and I were in the mood for desert after consuming ofter 6 cups of coffee already that day, and Cali Cream happened to be close by. The reviews were pretty good so we decided to drop in. There was no-one else there so service was super fast, and there were tables outside to dig in once we ordered. We opted to share a 4 scoop flight since they couldn’t do three scoops (your options were 2 or 4 which was kind of weird).
The cream was good, but that’s it. I found them a bit on the sweeter side (not sickeningly but more than I’d like) and other than the Graham Central Station none of them were really exceptional. I think Cali Cream is good enough to warrant a visit if you really love traditional American ice cream but I don’t know that I would specifically direct anyone here. At least they are super cheap for how much ice...
Read moreLIGHT & CREAMY! A dessert trip to Cali Cream is a great idea, I had the pleasure of stopping by during SDCC and they had a wonderful array of ice cream flavors, they even had themed treats for Comic Con! I selected the Twix flavored double scoop, I enjoyed it very much. The texture was perfect and the ice cream had a gentle sweetness to it.
Service was solid, the guy who helped was super nice. I originally ordered a comic con flavor and made it to the register. suddenly they ran out! The guy was apologetic and professional. Cali Cream also has baked treats, I think this is a delightful idea as you can pair a baked good with a serving of cold ice cream!
The storefront is clean and inviting. It's truly a wonderful addition to the Gaslamp. Inside, there's tons of people, however the staff were quick and moved things along in a timely manner. There's a bunch of cool flavors, so many in fact I can't attach them to this review! Peep my pics below for the menu!
As for seating, there's a few outdoor tables, however they're very limited. Inside there's no seating available. I also saw some shirts hanging up on the wall, I'm thinking they sell Cali Cream merch? Anyways, this a really neat ice cream parlor, I...
