Nick's is a well known / popular neighborhood Russian/Nob Hill establishment that serves good Mexican food / tacos and in the evenings weirdly becomes this Asian nightclub called Rouge. The place is casual (weekend brunch you can even catch people in shacker attire) but it tries to be classy with red/black color scheme & nice chandeliers.
The food is choice -- big portions, good flavor etc. In particular I like their guacamole and their breakfast burritos. Pretty big menu and they are good about customizing it to your liking. They also have a full bar, which takes CCs (restaurant section is cash only but has an ATM). They have a number of TVs but in my experience it is not a great place to watch a game if you actually care about said game, as the place gets too crowded/loud / hard to find a seat (and the TVs are kind of small / far from the booths).
A lot of people like to talk about $2 Taco Tuesdays, but in my opinion the lines get way too long if you actually want to eat (although Tuesdays can be a good time to people-watch). I prefer the 2 for $5 Fridays and the bottomless mimosa Sun brunch (goes until 3) and the all day happy hour on Sundays as well. The line can be daunting, but once you make it through, they are very fast to bring out your food. The space is big but seating can be deceptively hard to come by during weekends and obviously on Tuesdays when the place is packed to the gills.
One request if the Nick's folks are reading this: y'all need to get some bigger cups for the complimentary water! I can go through like 6 cups over the course of a meal...sometimes it feels like I'm spending more time going over to that carafe than I am actually eating the meal / socializing...
Read moreAfter seeing the popularity of this place on yelp, my boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday for lunch. You have to pay and ordered at the counter before grabbing a seat with your order number. When I checked in on yelp, I got a free side of chips and pico de gallo. My boyfriend and I decided to share 4 tacos. We ordered the Carne Asada, Pollo, Carnitas, and Pescado. We also ordered a large Watermelon Agua Fresca and 2 Elotes to share.
Chips & Pico de Galo: There was about enough salsa for 10 chips, but can't really complain since it was free.
Tacos: My boyfriend and I both agreed that the Pescado taco was the best of the four and even then we weren't that impressed. Maybe we have been spoiled by the great Mexican food in San Deigo that the tacos here were underwhelming.
Elotes: These are a must get. The only thing I didn't like about it was the price, which I could get 3 of the same thing off a cart on the street and it would taste just as good.
Watermelon Agua Fresca: Pretty refreshing.
Overall, I didn't enjoy the tacos that much, even though that's what this place is known for. I probably wouldn't come here again just because the tacos were too pricey and not...
Read moreI should be pretty partial to this place since we share a name and everything. I had passed by this place several times before stopping in and it turned out to be worth the wait. Nick's is attached to Rogue which is the bar section.
When you enter there is a bar with tvs and seating if you are just in for drinks. If you want food you head all the way to the back. A couple things to remember. This is cash only so bring your cash before you head in. There are ATM's in the back as well.
Once in the back there is a huge selection of tacos and burritos and pretty much must mexican food options. The taco I had wasn't that great but I was only able to try one kind. I did get the Nick's way which is a lot going on in a taco but it is different which earns some points.
Once you get used to the idea of a crispy taco inside a soft taco it is actually pretty good. I am going to chalk it up to a one time thing that my taco wasn't the best. The cushy seating and amazing velvet decor make this place worth returning to with friends. If you are up this far on polk street and its late and you have the munchies this is a way better choice than your...
