Have you ever gone somewhere and felt you didn’t belong or shouldn’t be there ? Like in the movies when the guy walks in an establishment and the record gets scratched then the music cuts off . That’s the best way I can describe my experience at susicakes yesterday . I wasn’t going to post about it but at the urging of several of my friends and colleagues I would be doing the public a huge disservice if I kept this to myself / circle of friends . I walked in with my son to get him a birthday cupcake see I’m a single dad I get him on the weekend and for his birthday I took him to see his favorite thing which is dinosaurs. They had a great exhibit at the California Academy of Science which happens to be a few miles from the location on Chestnut so after spending the day checking out all the exhibits I thought well I don’t live nearby so I can’t take him home and give him a proper birthday cake with candles and all so what’s the next best thing . I quickly did a google search for best cup cakes in SF and number one was Susiecakes and even better they were less than 3 miles away . We went through ton of traffic lights to get there so those 3 miles take longer than they should but that’s just life in the city .We we’re lucky enough to find a parking spot quickly and headed right over . We walked in and that’s where my experience went south . 4 young ladies most with a scowl on their faces and no one could be bothered to greet us when we walked in. 4 young ladies and no one else in the store other than myself and my son and no one could even say hello maybe the conversation they were involved with was that groundbreaking that even acknowledging our presence would have thrown off the whole thing .I remember thinking to myself I guess these must be the best cupcakes on the planet because how do you get repeat business with the staff ignoring the customers . I then decide to break the tension and say hello to which I’m eventually acknowledged a few moments later . I was thrown off by what just happened and I have never been to this establishment before so I asked basic questions to which I was not given any real clear direction on how the cupcakes are sold .I didn’t see any signs up indicating pricing or really any direction on how this transaction is handled so I just asked my son what flavor he would like I then ordered a couple more but the feeling in the room was not inviting so I just quickly picked whatever and then proceeded to pay . A couple of minutes later a small box containing my order was dropped on the counter by one of the girls who was talking amongst themselves earlier .up until that point I felt it was all in my head but when someone does that it’s clear they were not after my business . I handed the box to my son thanked them and wished them all a good day I even left a tip, not that they deserved one but I’m just that way. To affirm my suspicions as I was getting ready to head out a gentleman walked in and the girls did greet him .maybe i was profiled maybe not but this man looked like everyone else from the neighborhood where it’s clear that i was definitely not .To the Brunette that took our order thank you for at least trying to fake it better than your...
Read moreIt's the 1950's at Susie Cakes in San Francisco, and time to get Caked Out! The most moist, deliciously simple, local cake shop, with the highest quality, Homestyle cake - centric desserts. Similar in approach to Magnolia Bakery in NYC, but with more flavor, and less sugar, perfectly balanced between light and fluffy, yet a substantive gluten structure, never overbearing or over - beaten. Cupcakes are $3.75 each, with ones saying "Happy Birthday" having a $2.00 / 54% surcharge, which would normally be bonkers, except this is pricey San Francisco, and seems totally palatable for exceptional quality, and simplicity. Cake decorations are simple, and paper good supplies from Meri Meri available for purchase. Plastic cake cutters are $2.00, and jumbo or ultra skinny candles, $6.50 each. There isn't a public bathroom available, parking is a bear off of Chestnut Street, foot traffic plentiful, and the way to usually 5 to 10 minutes before being helped, and an additional 5 minutes to check out. Wheelchair accessible, and $$$ or $$$$ out of $$$$$. I would recommend Susie Cakes, but skip the birthday...
Read moreGreat cakes and cupcakes! They're definitely a fan favourite around my office when someone brings them in for a birthday or other celebration. For my most recent visit here, I ordered a cake online to be picked up in an hour. The mobile website wasn't an ideal experience, but it was fine. Anyway, when I arrived here, it was with the intention to just pick up the cake and go (that was why I ordered in advance rather than just going in person only - to save time). It wasn't that busy when I was there, but it was extremely difficult to get someone's attention to help me (the staff were chatting), even though I went to the front of line where the Pickup sign was. When I finally got someone's attention, it was to find out the cake wasn't ready and packaged yet, so I had to wait longer. Long story short, cakes/cupcakes 5 stars "usually" (though the cake from this last visit was somewhat harder and dryer than usual), service 2, but I'll average up 4 stars overall. Like I said, the treats are good, but I'd probably go to one of their other locations next time to pick things up when...
