I really don't know what to say about Silk Restaurant..... but I feel like I needed to say something. The staff there possibly racist, and extremely rude, particularly one waiter who is tall and has dark hair. We went there twice during our stay in San Juan, because it was conveniently located right next to our hotel, Doubletree. The first time, for lunch, was wonderful... the food was moderately priced, and tasty. Our waiter was an older Asian gentleman who was extremely polite and attentive. The experience was very positive. So, we decided to return. We shouldn't have. The second time we went at approximately 9:30 p.m. for dinner. We were tired because we had spent an entire (pleasant) day in Old San Juan. We just wanted to have a quick dinner and go to bed. We arrived at the restaurant at exactly the same time as a group of four blonde people, and actually held the door open for them in an effort to be nice. They were nice and said thank you. We all stood in the area by the door, and the woman in the front desk said, "Table for seven?" No names were exchanged, and it was very clear that they did not have a reservation. We said no, we are not together. The four blonde individuals were seated immediately thereafter. My daughters and I were told to wait for approximately 10 minutes before we were rudely told that they could not accomodate us. There were empty tables in the restaurant. I shook my head and left, but my teenage daughter apparently told them that they were racist (reasonable assumption, since the blonde individuals were seated immediately and we weren't. I am a middle aged Indian woman with two teenage daughters).
That wasn't the shocking part. The shocking part was the tall dark haired waiter who actually followed her out of the restaurant and started yelling at me in the street and I should be ashamed of myself. He insisted that they were not racist, the people before us had reservations (?- then why didn't they give their names and why didn't the front desk know they needed a table for four?) He ranted and raved that he had a hard day, and I had made it harder (remember- I did nothing, but my teenage daughter called it like she saw it). I just stood there in the street, shocked and dumbfounded. Needless to say, I did not go back there.
If you are a person of color, beware at all costs. It's just not worth it. There are other...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI liked that this spot was easily walkable from our hotel. We were quickly greeted by the hostess and sat. The crab wontons were pretty good with a great amount of crab inside. The volcano sushi had nice flavor and I liked the different textures. My kiddo ordered the chicken fried rice. She liked it, but was expecting more chicken. The proportion of the actual rice was huge, so plenty for leftovers. We also had the chicken lo mein and it was good. I liked the little details- the "fork chopsticks" for kids were so cute, I've only had the adaptors for chopsticks but this made eating noodles super easy. The plates have a curve to them which makes it hold all the sauce and I loved it. I feel like our waitress ruined the experience. I was looking for some input with the different rolls and nothing. She also never explained that refills are extra (when she offered them) and since the menu is digital I looked on there and didn't see as well. At the end of dinner I really wanted the espresso martini that other reviewers had raved about but we waited over 15 minutes for her to come back to us and by that point I just asked for the check. We were seated next to a couple that came in right before us and they seemed to get the waiter with all the personality and efficiency so maybe this...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe food was as expected. Nothing to rave about. Food came out quick. Server was AMAZING . They continued to refill our water. We only had 3 appetizers and split a small entree. The bill total was $51 before tip. We didnāt get to try any of their drinks. The atmosphere was beautiful. Great lighting and fixtures.
We ordered the steamed chicken dumplings that were very tasty. The Vietnamese springs rolls were pretty good too, the crushed peanuts on this dish were a great touch. Also had California rolls as appetizers. Very good as well. Exactly what was expected.
I did find that entree a bit underwhelming. Seems like they used a short grain rice to fry the rice instead of a long grain. Maybe the wok wasnt as hot as itās supposed to be as the color of the rice seemed to come from soy sauce instead of the frying process. The protein of this dish was tasty.
Other than the short grain rice being used , this place was pretty good. I would come back and try other dishes like the...
