Classic Seattle drive-in—fast, friendly, and full of nostalgia!
🍔 What Makes It Great: • Simple, timeless menu: Burgers, hand-cut fries, and creamy shakes—the essentials done right. Locals love the deluxe burger with its sweet, pickle-mayo sauce and gooey American cheese . • Freshness & speed: Food is prepared quickly and served hot. Fries are crispy when fresh, although consistency can vary (). • Affordable & community-driven: Maintains fair pricing and strong local roots since 1954, with employee benefits and community engagement (). • Iconic Seattle charm: The retro drive-in vibe, neighborhood locations, and cultural presence (Macklemore video, local weddings) make it more than just a burger joint .
⸻
⚠️ What to Keep in Mind: • Burger and fry inconsistency: Patties can be slightly dry or bland, and fries sometimes arrive soggy if not freshly made . • Crowded at peak times: Popularity means long lines during lunch, evenings, and late-night, especially at Capitol Hill and Wallingford (). • Basic experience: Don’t expect gourmet—there’s no seating in most locations, and the menu remains intentionally minimal.
⸻
💡 Tips & Recommendations: • Go early or during off-peak hours for the crispiest fries. • Order the Dick’s Deluxe—the signature sauce and cheese lift the burger experience. • Treat yourself to a strawberry or chocolate shake—it’s consistently praised for nostalgia and taste .
⸻
Final Verdict: Dick’s Drive-In scores a solid 4 stars—a beloved Seattle institution that delivers fast, friendly service and classic comfort food with rich local heritage. It’s a nostalgic must-visit, even if the burgers and fries can sometimes be hit-or-miss. Plan smart, embrace the vibe, and enjoy a bit of Seattle history...
Read moreBefore I begin, I realize this place has been around for a while and is a favorite for locals. And I know I’ve only been here once. Unfortunately, I just wasn’t impressed.
When we walked in, the place was completely devoid of tables. There was a big room with a massive concrete floor, nothing more, except the seating around the outside perimeter of the restaurant. I wasn’t sure if they had removed all the seating because of the game at the arena and they were expecting large crowds afterwards or not. But it was just odd.
Their service is fast. You order, the person behind the counter grabs your food while you pay, and you go eat. Plain and simple.
We took our sandwiches and fries and found some seats along the wall. Because the burgers are premade and sitting on the counter, everything is warm, including the lettuce. I took a bite and instantly wondered what kind of special topping they had. I didn’t remember any special sauce listed on the menu. Then I recognized that flavor. Those chopped pickles the menu listed as a topping? Yeah, I call that relish.
I won’t say the place doesn’t have any redeeming qualities. The fries are actually quite good. My wife said they had a nice crisp outside with a soft interior. I just ate them.
I also liked the cheese on the burger. I’m not sure why, but I just liked it. I might have been extra hungry.
Additionally, the price is crazy cheap, especially from what I’ve seen of Seattle.
Would I come back? I highly doubt it. Now if I were traveling with someone and they said, “Hey, I’d really like to try Dick’s,” I’d say, “OK, just so they could have the experience.
At any rate, if you’re looking for some cheap eats and quality isn’t high on your priority list, then this joint will...
