My friends and I were in the area for the weekend, visiting many of the restaurants in downtown Stillwater and enjoyed great food and drinks. However, our experience at the Mad Capper was less than impressive. The server was so unfamiliar with the menu that she did not know the difference between the casarecce and the caprese. Nor could she pronounce any of the pasta dishes, the featured foods for this restaurant. One of us ordered a drink unfamiliar to the bartender so she ordered an alternative. Not a problem except the bartender made it anyway and then proceeded to give it away to another person sitting at the bar instead of our table. Both the server and bartender never had a thought of sending that drink over to the person who ordered it?!? We did ask about the featured drink which was described as something with tequila. No name or detailed description to sell the drink. My old fashioned was also a disappointment as it was really a glass of whiskey with an orange peel not the usual drink I enjoy. The cauliflower tostada was delicious but it should be described as 4 tortilla chips and asterisked as “not shareable” as opposed to describing this as a tostada. It’s a complete misrepresentation. I understand it is a “small plate”, but honestly $8 for 4 chips is extreme. The side salad was the saddest looking salad I’ve ever seen and should be revised in the menu to state “side of greens”. A couple grape tomatoes, pickled cucumber, maybe some cheese would have done wonders. Thankfully the entrees were quite good so I am happy we stuck around as we were quite close to canceling and leaving. There were four of us at a table and the restaurant was not busy for a Saturday night and overall ambiance was nice. I understand help is tough to come by but it was obvious that management needs to provide more training and work with the servers on the menu to ensure understanding, pronunciation, and overall service. Serving locally sourced food is normally a huge plus for me but in this case the experience was such a disappointment, I...
Read moreMy family and I stopped in for lunch on a nice weekend. We sat at the bar while waiting for seats to open. As we were doing that, my 6 year old daughter was hoping we would get one of the 2 front window seats. Just in luck, 1 of the tables by the window opened up. When we were called, we asked the hostess if we could get a window seat. She flat out refused and sat us at a table near the back of the bar and then proceeded to seat the couple who just walked in to the window seat we just asked for. No reason provided, just unwilling to accommodate us with a fairly simple request. Plus the fact she gave the table to the next couple stands to reason that the table was available as well as the server in that section..
Needless to say, my daughter was really upset that the hostess wouldn't let us sit there. My wife is in the hospitality industry as well and wasn't impressed by the hostesses attitude. We sat around a few minutes without getting served before walking out. Went across the street to Brick and Bourbon and had a much better experience..
Reached out to the management and instead of sending us a coupon to the Mad Capper. They gave us a coupon for some Axe Throwing place??
Too bad, I've been coming to this place since I was 12. Love the atmosphere and the food was always decent for what it is. That said, I won't be bringing my...
Read moreMy family stays in Stillwater at least twice a year when visiting family near by and on a recent visit we stumbled into Mad Capper and what a wonderful surprise it was. It may seem like another bar/restaurant, but it is not. The food was fantastic and so was the service.
We stopped in for lunch one day when another favorite restaurant down the block was a bit too busy and what a bit of luck that was as we now love the Mad Capper. Two of us in our party of three ordered the walleye plate and we both thought it was the best walleye plate we've ever had. It wasn't overly breaded and it was so, so crisp. The Asian style green beans and crispy roasted potatoes were a perfect accompaniment. Seriously, this is a can't miss dish.
We loved the walleye plate so much, we came back the next night for dinner so that the third member of our party, who didn't order it at lunch, could order it for dinner. On our second visit, in addition to one walleye plate, we had the beef stew and pasta with tomato sauce. Both were great too.
I also love how they start you with an amuse bouche of a mini donut. Yum!
Both of our servers were excellent, but because it was slower at dinner, we really had a chance to get to know our server Lexi, which just added to our dining experience.
We'll be back again and again on future visits...
