My significant other, and a couple friends have been frequenting trivia at Yard of Ale for the past half a year or so. We have maybe been there 5 times or so. The main draw for us is the trivia, but typically 3/4 will order entrees and a couple drinks.
The service has always been pretty poor. Routinely the food will be not made to order, or another tables food entirely. The food itself is bland, and expensive.
Tonight however, something transpired that will guarantee that none of us will be back.
While playing trivia and after eating out food we were asked to move to the bar because they had forgotten about a reservation for a large table. We were a 4 top sitting at a table for 6. Typically I would agree to this, but playing trivia with four people all huddled around the bar was not something I was interested in, so I told them politely that we did not want to move.
They made arrangements to seat everyone, but the restaurant was getting busy and they were looking for more tables. The trivia host was ask to move to the bar, which he did. When he walked by I said, they might move you to the bathroom next, as a joke. We have been playing trivia with the same host for long enough where making a joke about the situation seemed fine.
A few minutes later, a patron, who I am told does not work here came up to me and the table and said that it was not funny making jokes about reservations and that people have to make reservations for tables here, and that I am very rude, before storming off.
I wanted to leave before any of this happened, the minute we were asked to move and said no I knew there was a target on our backs, despite others playing trivia just like us. Another gentleman, who had been bussing tables, and seating us came by and said that she does not work here, and that she is a friend of the server and that he can’t control her actions but did not like seeing that. He then asked us to once again move to the bar, which we explained to him that we will not be doing , and that if it’s an issue of moving or leaving we would rather leave.
When the large table with a reservation was seated our server told them that our table refuses move and accommodate them. As If it was our fault that they forgot to plan accordingly for their reservations.
Trivia ends, and I paid the bill, and tipped 20 percent despite the horrible time, because I know that servers rely on tips to provide their income. A patron behind us- who was also sitting at a 4 top alone and did not move for them, was talking to us when the other server there said behind us as she walked by “you suck” I couldn’t believe it so I calmly asked her, if she was referring to me, at which point she gave a sarcastic response of if I was talking to you you would know about it and a laugh. It was clear that was directed towards me.
Lastly while outside of the restaurant our server stormed outside and told me that my sweater was ugly and to never come back.
Not only did I have a 110 dollar bill for a couple club sodas, a beer, a panini, and a veggie burger, I was verbally assaulted by three different people while eating there.
It was clear that the restaurant was busier than anticipated, and that the two waitresses had to handle all the tables, as well as pour all the drinks, but that is no excuse to take out your frustrations on me.
When we come to trivia there is typically only a couple other tables there who are also playing trivia. If it was projected to be a busy night, maybe not have trivia. Or alternatively people coming in could be seated at the bar instead of us, or employ more staff so the downstairs section could be used for guests.
We will never return. Which is a shame because the trivia host is really good! Lesson here is- never roll around in the mud with a pig. The pig gets happy, and...
Read moreI’m going to start this off by saying two stars is a little harsh - the food was decent. Not great, but decent. The service however, at no fault of the TWO servers (one being the bartender) in a rather large pub in a busy “tourist” area on a Saturday afternoon, was frustrating. Upon arrival on a whim after checking out the posted menu, we waited for a bit without being greeted or acknowledged by staff who were clearly working hard to serve those already seated at a table or the bar. In fact, the lone floor server was being asked by the bartender to try and call more staff in as they were barely treading water. We almost ended up turning right back around but as we were making the decision, the friendly server ushered us to a table. Our drink order was taken pretty quickly and those of us that ordered beer received our drinks within a reasonable amount of time. The poor soul that ordered a root beer waited almost 15 minutes before we finally went to the bar to get the soda. We also had to ask for water a few times before it finally made its way to our table. We ordered our food, subbing fries for the chips that came with our meals, and the food arrived again within a reasonable amount of time. When we started eating, we realized quickly that a few of the specifications we had asked for (just two omissions in two sandwiches) were incorrect but given the state of the place we didn’t say anything and just dealt with it. The entrees themselves were decent as stated above but surprisingly bland - no salt, pepper, or much of anything on the proteins, and very meager portions of fries/chips to accompany them. When the bill came we were surprised to see we were charged full price for subbing fries for chips, a full $5 extra on top of the price of each entree. Note - they boast a “32 craft beer!” selection while actually maintaining a list of about 17-20. Overall, this was unfortunately not a great experience though again I have to say that our servers truly seemed to be doing their best in a situation that should have been foreseen by management. In summary, you’re looking at high prices for meager portions of “just okay” food. In the end, I would say you might be better off checking out one of the many other pubs and restaurants within...
Read moreI dined at Yard of Ale on January 26th and we sat at the front bar area. I asked bartender who waited on us about every single item prior placing order and he assured me that everything is good. I ordered French Onion Soup with Guinness base broth, Parmesan garlic chicken wings and Poutine. French Onion soup came out first and it did not look right, cheese was not melted/caramelized enough, broth was watery, completely blend, without any taste to it and without any reference to a Guinness. I was hoping bartender will come over to check on how I did like French Onion soup since I have not touch it after initial tasting and slide it away from me, but he DID NOT BOTHER to do so, even though he was not busy at all. Finally, he came back with the rest of the order and I told him that soup does not taste right and I don't want it. He apologized and took it away from my sight, but without asking me if I want something else instead. The Poutine and wings were just ok, but honestly NOTHING to brag about. The bartender was in rush to leave and asked if he can close our check since his shift is over, but he did not ask us if we want to order anything else or another round of drinks. When he brought us bill I noticed that French Onion soup was still on a check, I thought he left it there by mistake since he was in a hurry to leave, but when he came back he said that he cannot take off French Onion soup from the check. I told him that I didn't eat and that soup didn't taste right and asked why he is refusing to remove it, and response was hilarious - " I cannot remove it because you just did not like it, it's a HOUSE POLICY". For any restaurant in the business there is no such thing as refusal to remove item from check that was not cooked properly!!! Please do not bother to go to this place, because they will serve you some AWFUL food and will refuse to take any responsibility for it , also bar staff is very unattentive and unprofessional. Newberry's Yard of Ale is Yard of...
