I don't even know how many stars to give them at this time! Love the food here. Been eating here my entire life however, tonight has been the very first night that I've encountered such rudeness and disrespect from their staff! I called to place an order which consisted of a Big John's Burger, Jalapeno Poppers, Onion Rings (sm), and a large Vanilla Milkshake. I was very, very polite the entire time ordering. Mistakenly, I didn't ask for cheese and bacon. When the lady (with a Caribbean accent) on the line asked me if I wanted cheese and bacon, I politely responded with a yes please in which she responded with such a nasty and hostile attitude saying that the next time I decided to place an order for a Big John's Burger, I need to tell them that I want cheese ahead of time. That the BJB(the burger) only comes with meat and they need to know ahead of time. I told her okay, that's fine. The moment after my response, she decided to hang up the phone on me. Great! I wasn't quite finished speaking with her. I wanted to know the total amount of my order. I gave them a call back and said, "Hi, I was just on the phone placing an order. I don't know if someone hung up or if the phone got disconnected but I wanted to know if it were okay to have the total amount for the order?" Need I remind you, I still am being very polite. The lady responded back shouting at me about her not hanging up the phone, that it disconnected and so on. I said okay that's fine, may I have the total amount for my order please? She responded still shouting at me that it was her who I placed the order with and that she didn't hang up and that she can barely hear me. Just going on with so much hostility. To make this already long story shorter than what it really is, I finally became fed up and asked to speak to a manager. I'm not going to have anyone being disrespectful to me. If I'm still being polite and respectful to you, why the nasty attitude, yelling and carrying on? She proceeded to tell me that the manager isn't there and I couldn't talk to him. I told her that I will call back in the morning to speak with the manager then. I just want to know the total for my order so that I can pick it up and go. She said I won't be calling back in the morning. That the manager will not be here tomorrow or for the next couple of months! Hmmm? Is that really how people are to treat others? I could and certainly would understand if I had been an irate customer! Her verbal actions would've been understood 100%. I wasn't. I will be calling back to mention this to a manager! As many times as I've ordered from here, it's ridiculous! It's always that one bad apple! Food is amazing here but NEVER will I be spoken to that way from anyone! There goes my "family fun" dinner for...
Read moreFirst, I have two words for you: Double Cheeseburger. There are basically four kinds of burgers in the world, and they all have their place in my heart. There's the restaurant burger (big and high-quality, though sometimes too fussy, and trying too hard to be 'special'); the diner / coffee shop burger (heaven for a serious meal with all the fixins); the fast-food burger (when that's what you want, it's all that will do). Then there's the fourth kind, the burger one can only find at local spots in smaller cities and towns across the United States, and that's the variant offered at John's: the classic drive-in burger. The sear on the two high-quality patties, the size, the toppings, the bun, the cheese (melted directly on both burgers!), the proportions, and the general vibe of the place in which it's served all add up to a sublimely satisfying only-in-America experience. Not too big, not too small, and not aiming for anything other than a good, solid flavor, this unassuming burger hits the mark for me every time. Every time. But as their name makes clear, at John's, the ice cream is the real star. It's truly delicious, and in addition to traditional favorites (like an AMAZING Black Cherry), John's also offers an ever-changing variety of interesting, homemade flavors. On my last few visits, I found the Toasted Coconut, Banana-Oreo, and Peanut Butter Blast flavors (amomg others) to all be excellent, and a cup of their FlufferNutter ice cream absolutely knocked my socks off. HOW HAVE I LIVED FOR 60 YEARS WITHOUT THIS FLAVOR?? Seriously good, it tastes like a perfect version of its namesake - minus the white bread. Open late and year-round, John's is a great choice for a family sit-down, a snack stop, or a quick grab-and-go. It's also the perfect place for a post-game respite after a round of miniature golf at Puff 'n' Putt, which is a few yards down the road. There's also outdoor seating, further adding to the delightful throwback atmosphere. In an era when places often strive for a 'retro' feel, John's is the real deal; it's old-school, but not outdated. It feels like walking back a few decades in time, and in the best possible way. I've been going to John's Ice Cream for over three decades now, and I hope to visit for a few...
Read moreI haven't been here regularly since 1978. My friend Doug Hadgeoff worked here in the summertime and he just passed away recently. He lived out here during tourist season at John's. Fast food was and may still be the cuisine, and it was here before McDonalds became a household name.
I passed by one day this past August on a SBRA 80 mile bike hike from Islip.ppp It is still there but Montauk is now "Yuppieville" and I hate it . All of the new buildings look the same as if the architects were all depressed and suicidal. Hey, the residents must have approved it. This speaks volumes about who lives here now.
It was simpler back then. I would be able to swim whenever I darn well pleased without lifeguards or some government agency interfering. Then we would go to John's to slay the hunger demons. You see, John's Drive In is much more than a burger joint. It's part of our culture and my history. History that has been lost and places that have vanished. Long Island is too crowded now with eroded beaches and plenty of pollution, but this place is still my home, even after sailing around the world in a submarine. You just may not be able to find a parking place here in town from Memorial Day to Labor Day here and you can't pass wind without a permit. E.P.A. regulations, I swear! Okay, I was trying to be funny. At John's Drive In parking should not be a problem, as it is not a part of the movie-set-looking downtown.
John's is the REAL Montauk. The rest is a Hollywood set for all the Buffys and Jodys who think they are more important than the fishermen who made Montauk what it was; the good part. Montauk and John's are important and real for the rest of us who were born and raised here. Go visit John's. There is nothing fancy about this place, but it sure beats McDonalds and all of the other hockey puck-serving...
