Update March 2022 I have learned that all of the mochi filling is red bean. The different flavors (chocolate, strawberry, and green bean) are for the outside mochi dough, which personally doesn't make sense to me.
The food quality is still the same. For new items I've tried: the green tea (matcha) cheesecake has a disappointly gritty matcha taste, and the crawfish salad has real crawfish meat and is very creamy.
The service is still friendly and efficient. Only some of staff are wearing masks.
Oct 2021 Decent sushi, good service, and one questionable moment that caused me to take off one star. All the staff wear masks and there are barriers between the booths and in the middle of the conveyor belt, separating the opposite directions. I don't remember if there's a barrier between the bar seating and the kitchen area.
The questionable moment was seeing a huge fly trapped in one of the sushi plates on the conveyor belt. In the kitchen, it looks like the staff premake the sushi and other food plates, cover them, and then stack them to one side of the counter. When they see a particular food running low on the belt, they add to the conveyor belt from the stack. They can also easily add or take away different types of food since the belt is pretty open to the kitchen for most of its length. There are holes in the covers, but they aren't very big. I suppose the fly could have crawled in through a hole, but I think it's more likely someone wasn't paying attention before covering the sushi plate.
The sushi quality was pretty good for mall sushi, and they have a few interesting sushi rolls. Most notable were the PB&J roll (self explanatory) and the Maryland Crab roll (with real crab and dusted liberally with Old Bay, lemon on the side). I think the MD crab roll had too much Old Bay, but I personally don't like Old Bay that much. I did not see sashimi on the conveyor belt, so I'm guessing you have to order that. The spider roll was a disappointment without much (or any) soft shell crab. The salmon was decent and the eel was pretty good.
They also had additional appetizers and desserts on the conveyor belt. These were a little disappointing. The hot foods are stacked on top of a fake burner (with battery operated "flame" light) on the conveyor belt, one plate per burner. Sadly the fried spring rolls had very little filling. The shrimp and chicken dumplings had decent amounts of stuffing though.
The soba was good, but with very little actual soba. Of the two summer rolls, the vegetable summer roll tasted better. Also note they are not wrapped very well and don't have vermicelli. The Orange Delight is basically orange flavored jelly, shaped to resemble orange slices and using actual orange peels for the presentation. However, while promising, the jelly doesn't have much orange flavor (I could get much more intense flavor with homemade jelly). For the mochi, note the flavors are red bean and green bean, despite what it says on the menu.
The wait staff were friendly and efficient. They also provide you with more wasabi and ginger upon request. Please note that since the price is based on plate, it's best to stack your plates by color as you finish. It's much easier for the wait staff to count and total your plates that way. Someone also comes by periodically to take away the plate covers.
Overall, pretty good sushi and a nice experience (except for that one moment)....
Read moreThere is good BUT mostly bad.
The GOOD: A revolving sushi bar in the mall - cool, right? Looks like fun!
The BAD: The sushi is a joke. Some pieces taste okay at best. But the portions are tiny and overpriced! The last time I went here, I was carefully looking at many of the sushi pieces, and quite a few of them had started to discolor and gel. A few of the sushi pieces looked okay.. And those are the ones I grabbed. But be very careful because rotting fish can make you very sick. You can average $5 for each item. $5 average price for not just sushi, but peanut butter and jelly "sushi" rolls, little balls of watermelon, dry crunchy snacks in a little bowl, 3 orange slices, cake... yep, each of those items are $5 average price.
Sadly, sometimes I'm just craving sushi and I'm at the mall. I tell myself to grab just two or three little dishes and leave. It won't be satisfying... Not by any stretch of the imagination. But at least I'll get some sort of little sushi fix. And every time I do, it costs me $20 to have a couple bites of food and I always leave completely dissatisfied (not to mention worried I'm going to get sick). And I always laugh at what is available on the conveyor belt. It wouldn't be so bad if the non-fish items were way cheaper. But they are...
Read morei Absolutely adore the concept of this place. The conveyor belt interactive concept where you just sit down, and grab a plate from the moving belt, and prices are depending to the color of the plate chosen. Plates range anywhere from around $3.50-$8 I believe.
You can get a decent roll consisting of about 4 to 5 pieces for $5. Oh, I should add that the rolls are not full rolls most of the quality ones have 5 pieces tops. But there are some other rolls with about 6 to 8 pieces too, I got the Tyson's & Dragon roll this visit, i loved the dragon roll, the presentation is cute & the eel was yummy.
This particular visit I didn't think my cup was too clean but in good faith it could've been stained from previous orders (as it seems like their designated cup for green tea)
Do not expect a Japanese steakhouse type of sushi quality, or even too much of the best mom and pop (small) sushi restaurants that you've been to. The big thing about this place is more so the experience of it all and how cool the conveyor belt is.
But with that being said ...I have always enjoyed sushi here every time I visited wasabi. 2.5 stars but the experience makes...
