A group of friends and I went to Tap99 for their trivia night. I personally didn’t get anything to eat or drink, but from what I saw, the food seemed great with drinks! The self pour bar was a bit tricky to figure out, but once we got the hang of it, it was fun. The art and decor of the bar was lovely as well, loved the murals and the industrial interior design was lovely!
This review has less to do with the bar itself and more about the trivia night. I think multiple aspects of trivia night could be improved for a better experience.
I think there should actually be a set of rules and structure for the game, instead of just “don’t google the answers”, which is a great rule to start off with, but not enough. My team and I were very confused when we answered the first few questions, because there was no time limit, no countdown, and no one revealed the answers until after the whole round was finished.
We arrived either a few minutes before or right at 7, so we may have missed the explanation for the app, but regardless, the host should be encouraged to repeat the rules so all players have a fair understanding of how the night will progress.
I think the biggest improvement will be having each round having a time limit, whether it’s 30 seconds, a minute, etc. I felt like I couldn’t take my eyes off of my phone because I had no idea when the questions would pop up. It wasn’t until 2/3 of the trivia night was done that we figured out, the host moved on when everyone’s answers were submitted. But this should not be the deciding factor for moving through each question. If a team happens to miss the question, or just not answer, then what’s the solution? Because of there being no time limit, the trivia night went overtime as well, which I wasn’t expecting. The past few trivia nights I’ve been to at other bars usually ended at the time they advertised.
I think the biggest help for improvement would be three fold. One is to invest in better speakers. My team and I had to actively struggle to listen to the host, and I think getting better speakers would help them out a ton. Also having a TV or two devoted to showing the questions would also help players as well! That way there’s less of a chance a team misses a question.
The next thing would be for the host to project a little. Even without a stellar speaker system, I think the host should be able to command the room a bit better, just so we can hear the questions. I know it’s daunting to have to speak out in front of a crowd, but we are all there to have fun at the end of the night, so I hope the trivia host is encouraged to give a bit more energy and project their voice and energy into the crowd.
Lastly, having a structured night would alleviate a lot of problems that I noticed during the night. Giving a clear schedule of how each round will go, how bonus rounds work, and time limits for each question and round would help not only the players, but also the host, so they can know how much time they have to tally points and keep the energy up and moving.
The bar was very fun and had both indoor and outdoor seating, which made for a great atmosphere, since the weather is warming up. I’d love to come back to see some improvements to trivia night, and spend some time with friends and drinks. Thank you, and hope to...
Read moreVery cool experience. It seemed the set up were for college aged kids, but the idea behind it is really cool. When we first walked in we were under the impression they only had beer on tap. We asked an employee at the front desk (who must’ve been new) if they had ciders. He didn’t know what a cider was. After looking through their drinks we found out they have ciders, margaritas, mojitos, and much more. We got our tab started and we’re handed Tap 99 cards. The drinks were pretty good and the music was definitely a vibe. People were dancing, drinking, and playing beer pong. When we decided we wanted to close out our tab we approached the front desk. The gentlemen (who must’ve been new) told us to put our cards in this bowl that had a sign saying, “If you don’t want to wait to close out your tab, place your cards here and we will automatically close out your tab with a 20% tip.” My friend put his card in but I asked if I could close out now. I normally always tip but I was serving myself my own drinks & what if the bowl got knocked over or someone grabbed my card out of the bowl.. they could just spend however much on my tab and I would be responsible. The gentlemen was very rude saying no just put your card in the bowl. He finally said okay just for you I’ll close you out. Needless to say it was a good experience but I probably...
Read moreWalked in feeling like I would be in heaven… unfortunately that’s where it begins to come downhill. Cool theme and awesome art… Beers, IPAs, cocktails, and wine all on tap for self service. Excellent to be able to grab as you want. Service was pretty good, we were greeted upon arrival and given good explanation on how the taps worked and how to order food. Sat at a table placed order for food through QR code on my phone. The prices are reasonable for a spot located right across from Nationals Park. Now comes the food… pizza very dry and burnt in different spots… fried mozzarella were huge but average taste, nothing to rave about… totchos were good but the massive amount of cheese sauce made them very soggy… chicken empanadas were disgusting from the dry and tasteless texture on the outside to the inedible chicken/mush inside… onion rings were probably the base they had to offer… and last the wings, now as any bar food goes (you live and die by your wings) texture was pretty good on the crispy side, taste a bit salty but overall not bad, meat cooked through and not bad… which make the overall review 3 out of 5 stars… still nice to grab beer before the game and have...
