Ordered the pork souvlaki, which came undercooked, nearly raw, the moussaka, which was cold, and the falafel, which was a bit unconventional but ultimately fantastic.
I'd eaten at the other York location before and wanted to bring my friend along, but this experience was embarrassing in comparison. The moussaka had some kind of drop-biscuit adjacent pudding on it where normally one would expect bechamel and was obviously prepped in advance given the temperature. The texture was monolithic and uninteresting, like an overcooked boiled potato, and the flavor was complex but dampened by the topping.
I ordered a side salad with the moussaka (mercifully, it was also cold) and it held a very interesting proposition; while the salad was too coarse to eat without cutting it, it was served on top of paper, which, wet with dressing, became too easily chopped and incorporated; certainly not the sort of fiber I prefer in my diet.
Beyond the negative, the flavors were mostly there otherwise. The pork held the unrealized promise of what it had been at the concord road location, and the salad was flavorful and dry in a much appreciated contrast. If executed better it'd have been an easy 4/5, 5 with the use...
Read moreA few weeks ago, I visited this restaurant and decided to try something different from my favorite, the chicken gyro. I ordered the traditional gyro, and the cashier encouraged me to get the combo, so I went for it. The first thing I noticed was that the tzatziki sauce had no flavor at all. There was an abundance of lettuce and only one piece of tomato.
I love Greek food, having grown up in Greek Town, Baltimore, so I consider myself familiar with good Greek cuisine. Today, I decided to give the restaurant another chance and ordered the chicken gyro. Unfortunately, that was a mistake. The chicken was flavorless, consisting of a mix of shredded white and dark meat, just like the tzatziki sauce. Once again, I found lots of lettuce and just one piece of tomato.
The cashier came to my table and asked how my food was, but I didn’t have the heart to tell her it was terrible (she was very nice). I would not recommend this place to anyone; it was the worst Greek food I...
Read moreWas in the area and noticed a new place had opened where Silantra used to be. Staff were very friendly and we talked for a while while my Traditional Gyro, fries and hummus were prepared. There is a beautiful selection of imported and home made deserts and I ended up snagging a slice of Baklava Cheesecake to surprise my wife. I ordered this food to go and it was still nice and warm once I got home. The fries are fresh cut and seasoned, so naturally they won't travel well, but a minute in the air fryer fixes that. This was the best Gyro I've had in the area and so much better than the place that I won't name in Dover that I passed on my way home. Hummus was also good and portions were very generous. I'm not even half way through my Gyro and I had to take a break to write this review.
Will try to report back on the Baklava Cheesecake once I find room or my wife gets home.... Whichever happens...
