I recently dined at Madam Tran Restaurant in Hanoi's Old Quarter, expecting an authentic Vietnamese experience based on its glowing reviews. Unfortunately, my visit was nothing short of a disaster, marred by appalling service, unhygienic conditions, and unprofessional staff behavior. Upon arrival, despite several empty tables, we were seated at one that had been hastily wiped but remained greasy to the touch. Other vacant tables were cluttered with restaurant supplies, and a large table nearby was left uncleared for over half an hour, with dirty dishes piling up a clear indication of the establishment's disregard for cleanliness and customer turnover. After placing our order, we waited over 30 minutes without even receiving basic table settings. When we inquired about our order, the waiter, who struggled with English, dismissively stated it would arrive in 20 minutes. This lack of communication and transparency was frustrating. To our astonishment, the same waiter later approached us, asking if we had placed an order a clear sign of their disorganization. Pointing out the staff member who took our order yielded no action, as they failed to communicate among themselves. When I confronted the original waiter about our prolonged wait, he responded with a smirk and walked away without a word, displaying blatant disrespect. Feeling insulted, we left and found a nearby restaurant that, despite being busier, offered prompt service in a clean and welcoming environment at more reasonable prices. Further research revealed that my experience was not isolated. Other patrons have reported similar issues, including incorrect orders and subpar service. In summary, Madam Tran Restaurant fails on multiple fronts: unsanitary conditions, incompetent and rude staff, and a complete lack of organization. I strongly advise against dining here, as it seems the management is either oblivious to or indifferent about these glaring issues. Save yourself the disappointment and choose one of the many other reputable dining...
Read moreThis review is in regards to cooking class only.
We came in and were treated very nicely, booked a group cooking class and turned out it was just me and my wife in the group so in the end we had a private cooking class for the same price, which was great.
First we were taken to a local market for a tour which was nice, and the guide was young cool guy that spoke good English. Great experience
The two biggest disappointments were:
the chef of the cooking class spoke 0 English, everything was translated back and forth through the young guy that took us through the local market. This was a really big let down, if I knew that the chef didn't speak ant English I would never book the cooking class, not being able to speak with the chef directly takes a big hit on the experience. We were in other cooking classes across Asia and this was the first time that we didn't have an English speaking chef. Sometimes the chef was talking long sentences and it felt like the translator only translated few bits, where we felt like we were missing out on the details
Banh Xeo We specifically asked to do banh Xeo, and we didn't prepare the mixing dough ourselves in the cooking class! We got a ready to go mix - what's the point of the cooking class if we don't prepare the ingredienrs from ground up so we can replicate it back in our home country?
Overall I'd probably rate the experience a 5star if the chef spoke English, it was a major letdown - I know this is Vietnam but we are in the capital and going for few hour long touristy experience, so It's kind of expected for the cooking class organizer's to have an English...
Read moreHonestly, I'm so disappointed by the food and service after reading all the great reviews. They serve both vegan and normal dishes and my sister is vegan so she opted for vegan options. We ordered two spring rolls, one vegan and one not, and upon serving, we confirmed with the waiters and they said it was vegan and turns out it was not. They didn't speak fluent english so could be forgiven due to miscommunication. We also ordered the pineapple fried rice and requested for no eggs, yet it was served with eggs and this was with the manager lady who speaks relatively good English who took our order. This, I think, is not forgivable especially when we made it certain. This same lady also messed up our order of draft beer as we were served bottled instead. It was not busy but rather a slow, non-peak timing so I don't understand the confusion and mess up. The pumpkin soup was horrible and honestly should not be served at all. My whole family would usually opt to not waste food and still finish it regardless but this was so bad, we could not even attempt to finish it. It was not soup but rather made thick with cornstarch. The texture and consistency was so weird and unpleasant. Would never visit again. The atmosphere is the only good thing about the place.
We appreciate that they offer vegetarian/vegan options, but we hope that they take dietary requirements more seriously for future guests as it may be fatal for...
