Mr Bean Bar — Restaurant in Hội An

Would genuinely give this a negative review if I could! Me and my sister were walking along the riverside looking for somewhere to eat and drink and stumbled across this quirky bar. As we browsed the menu, one of the many member of staff who was trying to get people inside rushed over, being as we were a bit hungry we went in, the worst mistake! While sitting at the table, we were informed of a 2 for 1 offer on cocktails, plus free shots and a shisha or a bucket as well. This instantly sparked alarm bells and we insisted we only wanted the cocktails we ordered (accepting that they were 2 for 1), and we also ordered food. When our drinks arrived, 2 shots were bought over to us as well. After having a sip of our cocktails we instantly knew something was wrong, my sister’s Mai Tai tasted of juice (no alcohol) and my passionfruit Margarita tasted of some bad alcohol - extremely strong, neither were good. At this point we could see we were being watched my members of staff, and decided to check the reviews… after a few minutes of contemplating how we would get out of this situation, we decided to say I wasn’t feeling well, and pay for our food and drinks before the food even turned up, we were going to pay by card (after reading reviews stating people had been followed out of the bar claiming they hadn’t paid, and being forced to pay twice) however when informed of a 4% charge for card payments, my sister announced loudly that she would be paying cash, we handed over the exact amount to the waiter and left promptly. We did noticed the waiter walked across the street to a man sat in a deck chair and hand over the cash (very suspicious!). The bar has staff everywhere you go in Hoi An harassing you to go here. All of them are extremely pushy, very in your face and not willing to accept a polite no thank you. My Girlfriend and I were peacefully walking around trying to enjoy the town and the lanterns at night. All the staff are very rude and we were approached by many while walking around the town. The last one we encountered was the worst. After saying no thank you to his very rude attempt at trying to get us to go to the bar he started following us down the road, walked behind us for hundreds of meters threatening to fight me and stab me, yelling threats at me in a very public space in front of many people with no shame. We just kept walking and he continued for some time until he eventually gave up. The behaviour of all these staff on the streets is disgusting and very much like school bullies, enough of a reason to never visit as I imagine the experience is much worse from the inside. We did walk past on our way to our accommodation and the music sounded awful and extremely loud from the street so would be impossible to have a conversation from inside the bar. I seriously don’t understand how this bar has a 3.2 star rating overall. Perhaps people have been heavily intoxicated when they’re writing their reviews.

I’ll be brutally honest. I’d been pickpocketed on the strip somewhere. The last time I was seen with my money, card and phone was at this bar. When I asked them for help, they tried to help me look but it was so packed they were tending to other matters (serving customers etc). Anyway, I was frustrated because I was a victim of a crime and I took it out on them because at the time, I thought they weren’t being supportive. I should’ve been kinder. The next day, I went into the police station to report my belongings missing and called the Mr Bean staff into the station to talk things out with me. They went through the security footage and did everything in their power to support me. Between the bar staff and the police, they found my phone within an hour of me being there. I’m extremely grateful for it. I would absolutely recommend going.

Ps. Despite the stolen goods, it genuinely is a good bar. We went back multiple times after attempting to enjoy the night in others and it just wasn’t the same anywhere else.
