This is the same company that does the Trivial Pursuit at TAPS bar and restaurant and I wanted to give my opinion on the experience.
We attended the the Harry Potter Movie based trivia from 7pm-10pm.
They did an amazing job transforming the bar into the magical world of J.K Rowling.
Harry Potter movie music blared, there was an animontronic Dragon the stage, and the announcer was decked out in an amazing (probably obtained from Universal studios) Ravenclaw cloak.
There were also wizard themed wares being sold which I made a mental note to look at more closely after the trivia. (This was a mistake...they closed it immediately at 10, unfortunately.)
My team was very excited about the trivia and had studied pretty hard for it.
The trivia is based entirely on the Trivial Pursuit answers which is supposed to be movie based but isn't entirely.
What you learn is that after 3 rounds, you can wager all your points to double them. This allows teams that haven't been doing as well to have more of a chance to win if they can answer a difficult end game question.
While we admired the inclusivity, (it makes the trivia accessible to all Harry Potter fans), it also rendered our efforts pointless.
They also don't judge the first 2 rounds themselves, meaning you trade with the tables beside you and it is only the last round where the organizers check and apparently grant little mercy. The other tables may judge answers correct even if there's subtlety in the answers. The organizers themselves grant little wiggle room at the end in the most important question.
Despite winning 3 rounds, the organizers judged our answer incorrect and we lost adter proudly having a good lead.
The trivial pursuit answer was "Crystallized pineapples" while ours was "candied pineapples". Candied and Crystallized are synonymous, but the judges didn't allow it. The movie also never says candied or crystallized, just pineapples. But because the trivial oursuit card states crystallized, it was dubbed correct .
Now, we do not know how the judges counted other answers, but we feel if some had answered "murdered" instead of "killed", the judges probably would still rewarded the answer.
All in all, we'll return and we think the organizers had done an excellent job with the layout.
It is a good time!
But if you're big into normal trivia, just remember that the first 2 rounds do not mean much as you wager your final points points, the judges only judge one round and that you must be absolutely precise if it's an item based question. Knowing this helps prepare in that studying isn't too beneficial unless it's for the obscure...
Read moreWe came here for mother's Day, we are not new to escape rooms and tend to do well in them. Their website did not have success rates or any way of knowing which are harder than others which I think they really need to update. The atmosphere was good, they also have axe throwing which looks fun! We did the taps Brewhouse room, the stage was set well. Unfortunately the puzzles didn't seem all logical. It took us 20 minutes and a needed hint to even figure out where to start as there was no start point given well in the opening story. And even after we found the puzzle the anwser wasn't logical and required 2 hints to solve and still left us all not understanding how they got to the answer. We were not able to complete any puzzles without hints each time. Also when opening a new box the experience was lackluster. Other venues play audio sounds or snippets to set the scene or continue the story. They did give us a extra 10 minutes but we left disappointed. We are fine with not solving the room, we want it to be challenging. But this room's puzzles were in our opinion just not done well. If you want a fun escape room experience with success rates on their rooms from 29% to 50% and that all all themed, well made and have fun logical puzzles try Niagara...
Read moreWe visited this Escape room with friends, after having tried a few others in the area. This one was more expensive then others, and didn't seem worth it at all. The staff wasn't very welcoming. We couldn't focus on the puzzles since we could hear the other rooms trying to solve theirs. The room next to us was doing the same as ours so even knowing that the answers were different it was hard to ignore what they where saying and hard to not take it in consideration, since the rooms aren't in fully enclosed walls. Having closed rooms that are distanced from each other would have improved this problem, or speakers with background music. I would not recommend this specific location to others, unless you have the chance of doing it with no other reservations at the same time. Maybe the owners should visit the escape room a few blocks down (Adventure Rooms Niagara) to see the right way to run an...
