Meidan Bazaar in Tbilisi is a unique underground market that blends history, culture, and commerce in a way few other places in the city can. Located in the heart of Old Tbilisi, this hidden gem is situated right under the famous Meidan Square. The area has been an important trading point for centuries, dating back to the days when the Silk Road passed through the region. As you walk through the tunnel-like structure of the bazaar, you can almost feel the history seeping through the walls, which have seen countless traders, travelers, and merchants pass through over the centuries.

The size of Meidan Bazaar might surprise you, as it's quite extensive for an underground market. Though not as sprawling as an open-air bazaar, it feels much larger than expected once you start exploring. It is designed like a network of tunnels, with each corner revealing new shops and boutiques. Despite being underground, it’s well-lit and has an inviting atmosphere, with arched ceilings giving the space an almost cave-like, cozy ambiance. The layout makes it easy to navigate, yet it still holds a sense of discovery with each turn.

There are over 30 shops here, offering a wide variety of goods. You’ll find everything from traditional Georgian souvenirs like wine, ceramics, and textiles, to more modern offerings such as jewelry, art, and handmade crafts. Many stores specialize in products that are unique to Georgia, making it an ideal spot to pick up authentic gifts or personal keepsakes. For those who enjoy Georgian wine, the bazaar boasts a variety of wine shops offering tastings and bottles to take home, showcasing the country’s rich winemaking tradition.

The range of products is diverse, and there’s truly something for everyone. You can find intricately designed Georgian carpets, traditional clothing, and handmade pottery in some shops, while others focus on gourmet food items like local honey, tea, and spices. The vendors are keen to explain the history and cultural significance of their goods, enriching the shopping experience with a deeper understanding of Georgian heritage. It’s a perfect spot for both tourists and locals who want to immerse themselves in Georgia’s artisanal craftsmanship.

Though compact compared to larger bazaars found in other parts of the world, Meidan Bazaar is impressive in its own right. The combination of its historical significance, its underground charm, and the wide variety of high-quality products on offer make it a must-visit when exploring Tbilisi. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs, gifts, or simply want to enjoy a stroll through a market filled with history and culture, Meidan Bazaar provides a one-of-a-kind shopping experience that you won't find anywhere else...

My wife and I entered the bazaar at 2:30 on Feb 26th hoping to buy souvenirs of our trip. The place looked cool and had interesting decorations.

Immediately we were met by a hostile young woman in a black head scarf who scowled angrily at us. We felt most unwelcome.

It seemed she was upset that she had to stop talking to her friend/coworker because we entered.

She then proceeded to follow us around the store as if we were attempting to steal from the bazaar. We are both 30+ years old American tourists, not typically the demographic that shoplifts.

When I picked up a decorative knife to look at it and check the price, she yelled at me to not open it and put it back. (How can I buy it without touching it?!)

Then my wife tried to buy a refrigerator magnet and we were told that the cashier wasn't there and we would have to wait. (Two employees and neither know how to process a payment for a $1 magnet?)

Overall, the workers were rude and did more harm to the business than good.

I cannot recommend anyone purchase anything from this poorly...

Meidan Bazaar located in the Old Tbilisi area, offers a wide selection of souvenirs, antiques, handmade works, Georgian wine and other products. It's the perfect place to find gifts for loved ones or a special memento to remember your trip.

What makes Meidan Bazaar truly special is its blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy. It's a wonderful place to immerse yourself in the local culture, meet artisans, and enjoy a leisurely shopping experience.

Meidani Square in Old Tbilisi is a kind of place where the distant past, with all its charm and exoticism, comes to life. This ancient district of Tbilisi has been known as the main bazaar since time immemorial, not only in Georgia, but in all of the Caucasus.

Past and present come together in this marketplace of antiques, traditional Georgian food, locally made art, and delicious Georgian wine. The area of the bazaar also has the view of the Peace Bridge, Rike park, Aliyev garden and much more.

I highly recommend visiting the...

This place deserves 5 starts for multiple reasons. 1. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful with all questions we had. They even let us film for our YouTube vlog (@Hobarts Abroad) 2. This place was like a microcosm of Georgian culture. All different kinds of Georgian teas, honeys, spices, wines, traditional clothing, jewelry, and other trinkets. Great place for buying souvenirs! 3. Very cool decor. This shop could have easily made the bazar a more sterile commercial look but has decorated in a way that is more rustic and authentic. Walking through is like taking a walk through Georgian history and culture 4. History - this place used to be where merchants stored wine and other goods in the basement below the road where the market was. It was then transformed into a walkway and finally into the store it is today. Highly recommend visiting even just to walk through. Very close to the sulfur baths and fortress. 10/10
