The sheer diversity of offerings is staggering, and it is clear that the market has evolved over time to meet the changing needs and tastes of Munich's inhabitants. Viktualienmarkt is the famous and historic Open Air Market in Munich. It has been a bustling hub for fresh produce, local delicacies, and traditional and local Bavarian goods since its founding in 1807. The market was originally established by King Maximilian I of Bavaria as an expansion of the overcrowded market at Marienplatz. It has a 140 stalls and shops. It’s overwhelming. It has fresh flowers, herbs, spices, breads, desserts, cheeses, wines, you name it, they got it. Many of the vendors have been operating their stalls for generations, passing down recipes and expertise.

This is a long established street market, but there is nothing special or unusual about it. The prices are mostly average, but the souvenir stalls are hugely overpriced. This is advertised as being ‘sprawling’ in size, but it really isn’t. You can easily visit all of the stalls in 15 minutes. Many of the stalls offer the same items, there isn’t much variety to be found. The beer garden is the main attraction, I imagine that in the summer it can get very busy and it is still pretty small. The market is fairly dated in some parts, but it was clean and spacious.
